Hello Readers!
This is the Pre-Read thread for the November 2021 Modern/Popular selection. This month we will be reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Why did you choose this particular book to read? What are your expectations in reading this book?

Ida (ida_my) | 40 comments I have this on my tbr list, and I guess November will be the month I read it :)

This is one of the books I really feel everyone have read except me, we even have a Norwegian translation available in my local library... I still think I will read it in English.

I haven't read many books with coulorism or domestic abuse as a central theme before - so I'm looking forward to start filling this gap in my book experience.

I’m a couple of chapters in. This book keeps getting mentions in all the book groups I follow, so it’s been gradually climbing my TBR list. Truly starting to feel like everyone has read it but me.

I’m enjoying it. The writing and characters are good, and parts of it resonate with other books I’ve read and enjoyed (Their Eyes Were Watching God has sprung to mind a couple of times, e.g.).

It was destined to be owned by you. Fate works in mysterious ways.

Toni Newell | 187 comments I just picked up my copy and I’m excited to read with the group next month!

message 8: by Andi (new)

Andi | 367 comments I read this over the summer based on the local librarians recommendation. It was an interesting and emotional story. I enjoyed the sisters stories and their views of the times.

Kimberley Stockdale (__klstockdale) | 4 comments I was recommended this one in my local bookshop, so unable to say no I bought it but haven’t picked it up yet! Looking forward to finally reading it very soon!

message 10: by Miriam (new)

Miriam I've never heard of this book before and I want to try it.
I joined this group because of the scarlett letter, but I think I'll read this first.

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Looking forward to joining in. I have not been able to join a discussion in a very long time. Looking forward to getting back into a reading groove.

message 12: by Miriam (new)

Miriam I've started it and it's written in a very compelling way.
I'm reading it as e-book but I'd like to buy the paperback edition.

Andrew | 52 comments planning to read this. The IRL book group I'm part off also wants to read this this month, so it's good to me to kill two stones with one bird (or is it the other way round? You can kill a stone, right? :p). have to admit I'm not looking forward to it. It seems like the kind of Profound and Important books that come along every once and a while, dreary social realist fiction about ever-so Important Issues that gets lauded to high hell by the literarati more due to the symbolic weight of what people think it means as opposed to it having any literary merit or actual political insight. BUT! I'm looking forward to being proved wrong, and actually am more than willing to give it a read with an open mind.

message 14: by Abbie (new)

Abbie (abbienormal21) | 279 comments I'm looking forward to this one! It's been on my TBR since it came out and I am planning to use it for a Popsugar prompt this year so I need to get on it. I really enjoyed Bennet's first book, The Mothers, so she's been on my radar since then. I feel like I should've read Passing by Nella Larson before this but I'm sure The Vanishing Half will stand on its own.

message 15: by Casey (new)

Casey | 13 comments I put all the November books in as a borrow request and this was the first available. I looking forward to reading this because I never would have otherwise. It’s definitely a reach for me but I appreciate the challenge and that this group’s picks are diverse.

TKO reads | 13 comments I read this last year. I reviewed it spoiler free.

message 17: by Yolanda (new)

Yolanda Rico | 81 comments I'm reading it because I gave up on Wuthering Heights and it was on the shelf at the library!
