Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments My library is hosting a "Trunk or Treat" event in a few weeks and I offered to to represents our Friends Group. We will be passing out books (and a piece of candy). Anyway, I need a costume. I do not want to go out and buy a bunch of stuff I will never use again, I don't want to be a ghost or witch...
Give me some good ideas for a costume that I could whip with cheap(er) items that could be purchased, or that I could make with things around the house (I have lots of things in this frickin house) HELP ME PLEASE!

Cora (corareading) | 1921 comments One year I was volunteering at the school book fair during Halloween so I dressed up as the Llama with the red pajamas.

Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney

I bought some red PJs that I could use for regular pajamas after Halloween and bought an inexpensive headband with animal ears from Amazon (they were actually called squirrel ears on amazon, but I thought they looked like llama ears).

It is not Halloween themed, but it worked for a Book Fair where the llama books were something the kids could buy. Maybe there are other book themed costumes that would work too.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I've built a lot with cardboard, paint and a glue gun. I don't sew but I love that glue gun. Maybe you could build a book costume?

message 4: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Something like this, maybe https://pin.it/7fyKhv8

and you could make the book itself a known spooky one?

message 5: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments I love the Llama idea-And that book idea is great Johanne-that would be easy to make, I am sure I have a box big enough to do that!

Theresa | 15574 comments I am terrible at coming up with clever ideas. One year I dressed up as a tourist -- the key tipoff to being a tourist were the cameras around my neck and the fanny pack with maps sticking out of it.

That's about it -- oh I've done gypsy.

But you can also buy posterboard or foamcore really cheap at hobby shop like Michaels -- also a good source for cheap things like fun headbands and stuff.

haha, yes I am terrible at thinking of ideas too-but I knew I could count on my friends here to throw out some ideas!

Best costume idea I ever came up with was Adam and I being the Lollipop Kids from Oz. We ending up winning 1st place in a contest

message 8: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12098 comments I've done pirate and cowgirl. Both were fairly easy. I did have clothes which worked for them.

I'm also terrible at costume ideas, but I love the tourist idea. :-) It's an easy one (I do have a few cameras I could use...)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 1641 comments I had a friend who dressed up as the fat lady painting from Harry Potter... she carried around a cut out carboard frame with her ;)

just had to dress in white flowy things & have a fruity headdress + a wine glass ;)

message 13: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5764 comments It would be fun if the kids could identify you, which leaves out Frida Kahlo. Of course, I don't usually know half the costumes the kids show up with these days because they are from movies/TV shows?books after my and my kids' time.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments One year one of the staff in our office came in a fluffy chenille robe, her fuzzy bunny slippers, a "face mask" on her face, and her hair in curlers,

Theresa | 15574 comments Just watched Guys Grocery Games and they showed one of the judges wearing pink pig ears, a rubber pig snout and wearing a fluffy blanket as a shawl. She was a pig in a blanket...da dump.

See? Why can't I manage ideas like that?

Theresa | 15574 comments A friend was on a cruise to Alaska and there was a costume party one night on the ship. A family wrapped themselves in white sheets...all except one...and pinned signs on themselves: dad was Big Sheet, youngest kid was Little Sheet, one was No Sheet, another Sheet...hilarious. but only works if several together.

message 17: by Doughgirl5562 (new)

Doughgirl5562 | 960 comments I had a friend who dressed up as a Rubik's Cube, which just requires a cardboard box and a lot of paint. She wore a black turtleneck and jeans underneath. So if you have the paint :-)

But maybe today's kids wouldn't know what a Rubik's Cube is?

message 18: by Joanne (last edited Oct 14, 2021 09:03AM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments I love all these ideas. If I was going to an adult party Frida might be the one I choose-but Robin is right, the kids would not get it.

Pirate and Johanne's book idea are in running right now! But keep them coming. got 2 weeks yet to figure it out.

Doughgirl5562 | 960 comments I just saw one that I thought was really cute. Glue a bunch of Smarties to a pair of old pants, add some glasses and carry a book. - Or maybe tape an "A+" to your pants also. - And you're a Smarty Pants!

I love that and it would be so easy to do.

And now that I think about it, you don't really have to "Glue" the Smarties to a pair of pants (thereby ruining the pants). Double-sided tape should do the trick.

message 22: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15574 comments Oh, kids know who Ruth Bader Ginsburg was -- that'd be easy -- dress in black and take one of those paper lace doilies to turn into one of her collars. Pull hair back and wear a pair of glasses.

An easy way to be a book is to do front and back of a book cover, connect with string at shoulders and just slip over the head -- like a placard. You could tie sides as well to keep from flapping.

~*Kim*~ (greenclovers75) My son went as a piece of bacon one year. There's a little bit of work to go with it, but the supplies are fairly cheap. I bought a cheap ($10) foam mattress topper and cut out 2 pieces shaped like bacon. I glued them together, leaving an opening for arms, legs, and a hole cut out for his face. Then I used ceramic paint in shades of bacon and painted it. He was a hit in the neighborhood that night.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments Wanted to Thank you all for being so helpful in my search for a costume. Time, as always, as made the decision for me. It will Ruth Bader Ginsberg. I got a dollie (spelling?) that I can cut to make a collar and lots of black clothes. Wishing I could have had the time to really concentrate on a costume, but everything else that has gone into making the event spectacular for the kids had eaten away all my time the last week. Again, thanks! I know I can always count on this gang.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments @Theresa-raining all week here, and no end in sight. Trunk or Treat is moving forward though. Busy all last night trying to find someone who has a tent I could borrow. A local business came through and contacted me just before I closed down in defeat! No one on our board thought I needed to know that our tent got pitched last year and a new one was never purchased. 😣

Jeesh - these folks need to go to communication training!

Good for the local business coming through! And for you for spending the time!

Enjoy the event. So glad that business came through with a tent!

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12593 comments Carry something-Ha! glad I did not see those suggestions and follow through. It was a Mad House, even with constant rain, gave away over 200 books and it was wonderful that almost every little girl knew who I was suppose to be!

Told you when I suggested it! Helped in part by the kids version of Notorious RBG. Gives me great hope for the future.

How AWESOME that you had so many to give away books to! Congrats!

Joy D | 10127 comments I see you've already selected RBG, but just came on to say my son and his friends always come up with cheap and easy costumes. He went as a "Bag of Eminems" (as opposed to M&Ms). He printed and cut out photos of Eminem in various rapper poses, and taped them onto a garbage bag with holes for his head and arms. It was funny.

His girlfriend dressed up as Dwight from The Office, with a mustard color shirt, tight pants, glasses, and tie, all purchased from Goodwill or found in a friend's closet.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments Just saw a kid "wearing" a large wicker basket, with a huge balloon bouquet attached ... is he Phileas Fogg? I was driving down the street, so could not really stop to take a proper look. I was certainly intrigued.
