Kati I decided to listen to Jennifer Lynn Barnes' The Lovely and the Lost. I really enjoy her books and they go by fast.

message 61: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments This year, one of my intentions is to read more books by authors I've discovered recently (I noticed that doing reading challenges means that I've been trying so many new authors every year and I kept saying "I can't wait to read more by this author" and then just not doing it.). So I thought this would be a great opportunity to read something by an author I had discovered through the ATY challenge. I went with a Terry Pratchett Discworld book, Equal Rites, which was a ton of fun and probably my favorite that I've read so far.

I also considered something by Ann Patchett (I loved The Dutch House last year), or Siddhartha Mukherjee (I read The Gene: An Intimate History last year and just got a free copy of The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer!) or Sally Rooney (I've only read Normal People so far) or Donna Tartt (I really want to read The Secret History).

Besides those above, I would recommend Ship Fever: Stories by Andrea Barrett, which was an absolutely lovely collection of short stories about natural history (this would also work great for the flora/fauna prompt!) or for a nonfiction option, Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo and the Making of the Animal Kingdom by Sean B. Carroll, which is a fascinating and well-written look at Evolutionary Developmental Biology, the science that explains how embryonic cells "know" how to arrange themselves correctly to form bodies and how changes in the developmental processes of organisms lead to mutations and, eventually, evolution of a species. Seriously, this book was so cool.

Shannon Ralph | 188 comments For this prompt, I think I am going to pick from one these three books:

Commonwealth by Ann Patchett
The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman
The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers

I really want to read The Loves Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois, but that is a MOUNTAIN of a book to climb at over 800 pages. Not sure I have the stamina! But I have the other two as back-ups if I lose my nerve, ;)

by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

I recommend my reading. It is a nice short story but breathtaking!
Other recommendations, based on my personal 5 stars list, are:

V for Vendetta
Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Diary of a Young Girl
Eva's Story: A Survivor's Tale by the Step-Sister of Anne Frank

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I had plenty to choose from for this prompt, but I read Stones for Ibarra by Harriet Doerr, giving it 4 stars. Of note -- at 74, the author won the 1984 National Book Award for First Work of Fiction for this, her debut novel!

Other recommendations: Maggie O'Farrell, Jeff VanderMeer, Ottessa Moshfegh and Ann Patchett .

message 71: by Adam (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments Reading Slay by Brittney Morris.

Interesting so far. Don’t know much about the book, but it is very engaging from the first few chapters.

message 72: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 96 comments Another of my 'catch-up' books which doesn't quite match up in time; I actually read this in April - and I eventually ended up reading it 3 times because I found it so interesting. It was something I read for some university research and it was far more enjoyable than I anticapated.

The New Rules of Marketing and PR How to Use Social Media, Online Video, Mobile Applications, Blogs, Newsjacking, and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly by David Meerman Scott

message 73: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 393 comments I've picked up Disappearing Acts by Terry McMillan for this one. I picked it up off the "500 books by women" list and am enjoying it so far. I was in the mood for something emotional and character driven.

message 74: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I had a bunch slated for this spot but I ended up reading a Colleen Hoover book that I wasn't expecting to read. I got it on kindle for cheap. I read Reminders of Him. I was going to read Acceptance or The Time Traveler's Wife.

message 80: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (mimbza) | 238 comments I read This Has Been Absolutely Lovely by Jessica Dettmann This Has Been Absolutely Lovely by Jessica Dettmann an Australian domestic drama that focuses on the dynamics and secrets of a family; dysfunctional at times, but still sweet and enjoyable. Annie Jones is in her 50s now, and has paused her dreams of becoming a singer and songwriter for decades. Now with three adult millennial children Annie feels the time has finally come for her to step away from all this and pursue her dreams. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ my review

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine, 1921-1933 by Anne Applebaum
⭐⭐⭐⭐

I did not like the original book that I planned for this prompt so went searching through the libraries audio ebooks. With current events what they are in it seemed like the perfect time to learn some history of the area.

Some of you may notice my name, I was named after the last Czar's daughter. My great grandfather emigrated from Ukraine to Canada before WW1. He never gave details of his life before coming to Canada. He never spoke anything but English to his children and wife. Listening to this book gives me some insight into why he may have decided not to divulge that information to his family.

It also explains the deep rooted anger that is felt by Ukraine at Russia and why Russia is so determined to wage war on Ukraine.
