For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, we are in the darkest months of the year right now, with winter all around us. This week, you are looking for a book that has a source of light on the cover, whether that's the sun or a lightbulb or some other item that brightens the days and nights.

Suggestions:
The Bear and the Nightingale (The Winternight Trilogy, #1) by Katherine Arden Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri Hellspark by Janet Kagan The Memory Collectors by Kim Neville Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie The Bedlam Stacks by Natasha Pulley The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan

ATY Listopia: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

What are you reading for this prompt, and do you have any recommendations?

I don't think the thing in Klara's hand emits light. It's a solar power sensor to maintain her power/energy.

NancyJ, I think the fact that it's a sun on the cover would make it count, though.

message 18: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3556 comments I just read Firekeeper's Daughter and I highly recommend it. It's one of the best "own voices" stories I've ever read. I don't always like YA, but this book was incredible. It was entertaining and I learned a lot about the culture of the Anishinaabe (Chippewa and Ojibwe tribes) people. There is an interesting mystery that helps propel the narrative. It utilizes the MCs scientific knowledge and skills.

This book also works for women in STEM.

message 28: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 773 comments I read Fire Becomes Her; it was kind of disappointing, lots of plot holes, and they keep telling us the main character is smart but she never...actually...seems very smart, lol. Pretty aesthetic, though, but I had higher expectations.

Lots of light on the cover, though, between the fire, the stars, and the city lights.

Fire Becomes Her by Rosiee Thor

I find those especially helpful for “cover” prompts rather than trying to find images of every book I’m thinking of reading!

Thanks!

LeahS | 1369 comments I read Artemisia by Letizia Treves by Letizia Treves which has a candle on the cover.

It was written to link with the National Gallery's exhibition of Artemisia Gentileschi's work, which I wanted to see, but started in the spring of 2020, so I didn't, so I at least got to see the paintings in the book.

Recommendations: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) by Becky Chambers ; Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie .

Errlee | 183 comments Thanks Jackie! I couldn’t see a link in the first post? Wondering if it’s something to do with the mobile app, which gets all weird when people post links to images. The first post seems to just drop off for me so I’m wondering if the link is somewhere I can’t see it:)

That link to all the lists is great too, thanks!

The app is always the culprit lol; there's just no accounting for what it will or won't let you do. When in doubt, use the web browser or a computer.

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments I decided to read Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. I initially thought I might use it for the non-human protagonist prompt, but after finding out how big a role the sun as a source of light plays within the novel, I decided to put it here instead. I really love choosing books to fill cover and title prompts that also have some sort of thematic connection!
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

If you are also interested in a book that fits both visually and thematically, I would recommend The Comet Seekers by Helen Sedgewick. I know this has a super low rating, but I found it to be extremely beautiful and compelling (you have to be okay with strange, unexplained magical realism and a depiction of a consensual romantic relationship between first cousins). The comet on the cover plays an integral role in the story.

I went with Raybearer, which I guess doesn't technically have a *source* of light, per se, but it does have the rays all around, so I counted it, mostly because I was set on reading this one. It was very good! And the follow up (just two in the series) was excellent as well!
