D.L. Checking in! Hi, everyone :)

Pasty Hag | 88 comments Hi D.L.!

Looking forward to this challenge. I think October's war made me read more so I'm hoping to have the same motivation for November. For me these themes are much easier than the Halloween ones, which were a fun challenge.

Jenny | 2191 comments Hi all!
Every challenge has me looking for weird things in books. Family dinners? Sure, they happen a lot. Now I have to notice that they do.

Howdy, pilgrims!
hehehe....Couldn't resist!

message 7: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments Hello! I'm very impressed with how dapper our pilgrims look!

Family dinner first? that going to be either the hardest to find or the one with the most creative definition of family and/or dinner!

message 8: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2191 comments Yup. My first thought was of a lovely dinner scene on the Rocinante in Leviathan Wakes. I would argue that the crew of the spaceship was a family. This should be fun.

And once you start noticing, it'll never stop. I'm still picking up on every mention of vinegar in my books! *sigh*

Jenny | 2191 comments If we ever do the Restaurant challenge again, I shudder to think of what the new "fish and chips with vinegar" menu item will be.

Adding Stacey to your team ; )

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2191 comments Hi Stacey!

Help me decide guys. I still don't know whether I am going to hand out candy to the kiddies tomorrow. My block is usually pretty busy, but I am still weird around a lot of people. Should I go buy tons of candy, or give it a pass? HELP!!!!!!!

message 13: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments Hi Jenny! I would definitely hand out candy. We did it last year and it was fun to see the kids. You can put out individual bags on a table if you want to distance (we made something like a clothesline last year).

message 14: by D.L. (new)

D.L. I will give out candy if we get any kids but we never seem to. We live in an apt. complex and no one will brave the big staircase every year. It's definitely concerning though with Covid, I understand that for sure. I like Stacey's idea very much of putting the goodies out. Hopefully, people will just take one and be nice so everyone gets some.

I have my first book lined up: Thanksgiving It mentions dinners even in the synopsis so I figure I can't go wrong lol

message 15: by Rosina (new)

Rosina Hi everyone....i have no idea what my first read will be...

message 16: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I have my TBR more or less figured out:

Family Dinners - Thanksgiving
Native Americans (Native, Indigenous or First Nation) - Moon of the Crusted Snow
Pumpkins - A Match Made for Thanksgiving
Baked Goods - Cappuccinos, Cupcakes, and a Corpse

I am reading Everything, Everything right now for another challenge. There are mentions of regular dinners in here with the MC and her mother who live together. It should count. It's a very easy read too. I recommend it.

Welcome to The Pilgrims.

There are a few suggestions on the pre game chat here...

message 24: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments Thanks! I think this first one will be the trickiest for me without rereading something. I'm trying one book I hope will work and have a plan if it doesn't. This is why I only signed up for 1 per week (plus life).

message 25: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2191 comments Hey guys, is there a rule for audiobooks that do not have a different edition listed that I cannot find? I am trying to figure out if I can use it and what the approximate page number should be.

message 26: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments I finished The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, it has a wedding where they talk about the meal and the little flower girl gets sick on all the sweets. And the deceased patriarch gives two of the relatives a gift certificate for a nice dinner where they can get to know each other. Does this qualify for family dinners?

I'm going to read another that will fit.

You mean the wedding dinner? I'd say yes that's a family meal - assuming that there are two family members present :)

message 28: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments Angie - check your book points. I think we may be under by 2 points. The scale is different than last round, and 300 page books are 3 points, not 2 (according to the post above).

These posts are in the middle so we will likely need a post to fix.

Thank you, Stacey! I thought I fixed them, but I did not! Only one post was wrong on the points and total. The other just had the points listed wrong.

All fixed now!

Totally missed this yesterday. Go bag, new little bundle. Did you have a baby? Are you both happy and healthy? Congratulations!

message 35: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments Congratulations Trina! and you can be sure no one minds "only one book" from you given the more important stuff you've been busy doing!

message 36: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments Congrats Trina! Please don't worry if books fall down the list of priorities.

message 37: by D.L. (new)

D.L. Hello, fellow Pilgrims. I finished 2 books for Family Dinners and may squeeze in a third by midnight in my timezone. We'll see. Hope you all have a great week ahead.

message 38: by Trina (new)

Trina (duskvamp) | 183 comments yes I did have a baby lol. she got re-admitted to the hospital tonight not sure how long we're going to be here she is being treated for jaundice. I posted my book completion for this week

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments Oooh! li'l cameo of a Dakotan Native in Jonathan Strange (Man Who Fears Water). Ka-chaing!

message 41: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 27 comments Sending you positive thoughts Trina. Done the baby in the hospital with jaundice and later on for other things throughout the first year. It's rough, especially because I always felt I should have been able to fix what was wrong (of course the whole not sleeping thing played into that too!) but she is in the best place to care for her and to let you get some sleep even in the those horrible hospital chairs.

message 42: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments Trina, sorry to hear, but I agree she is being taken care of and will hopefully be home soon.

The family dinners thing was harder than I thought. I started by Native American book and very early on there was a family dinner. Oh well. I should be getting 2 in as I found some good books that I know fit. I've got my option for pumpkin (no Jenny, not the pumpkin king). Hopefully baked goods will be ok.

message 43: by Cat (last edited Nov 08, 2021 05:38AM) (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments Hahaahaha! always the way, isn't it Stacey?

I'm happy to have found a Native American pop up (very briefly, but there) in my 1k pager, but hope to also read a couple of books authored by native Americans (or poss other indgineous) too.

I am utterly without any ideas for baked goods though :( (pumpkin was briefly a puzzle, but the Kirsten Painter series has pumpkins spaffed on each cover, regardless of the relevance)

Jenny | 2191 comments I am going to a friend's house, so I just need to bring a side dish or dessert. Still waiting to see what she wants. This will be the first big-ish social gathering I have been to since Covid. Should be fun. Or weird. Or both.

message 49: by Pasty Hag (new)

Pasty Hag | 88 comments Jenny, that sounds lovely! I know what you mean when: it's both invigorating and awkward to be out and more social again.

message 50: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments Alright Pilgrims! How's everyone's pumpkin books going?

I've put a couple in, and might get another in before the end of the week, but I'm mostly struggling with Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line. I have just not yet managed to get stuck in properly - which is annoying, as I like the writing and characters; I think its that the setting (an Indian slum estate) is too uncomfortable right now :( but I'll persevere - I have a feeling that it's going to start accelerating in pace now. No pumpkins in sight, but, is it a pumpkin coloured cover? Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line by Deepa Anappara
