Welcome to the Certain Dark Things Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on November 15th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

November 15th - Chapters 1 to 10
November 16th - chapters 11 to 20
November 17th - chapters 21 to 30
November 18th - chapters 30 to 40
November 19th - Epilogue // catch up

Katie (love---katie) | 576 comments I'll join in on this too!

Katie (love---katie) | 576 comments I don't know if anyone else has this problem with Silvia Moreno-Garcia's writing, but I absolutely canNOT read her books physically/ebook. I need to listen to the audiobook. My brain just can't process her words for as good as they are when I read them with my eyes vs. my ears.

Trip (shardsofromance) | 29 comments I've never read any of her books before, but I've actually heard that before I think about mexican gothic? Lots prefer audio.

Sadly I don't do audio books at all. Just cant focus on them.

I haven't managed to pick this up yet, going to try to start later tonight and catch up 😊

Raquel (mahayhay) | 212 comments I can't concentrate on audiobooks either so I stick to physical, but I was pretty surprised when I opened the book and discovered how thick and tiny the text was. It's been a while since I've read a book with tiny text so I was a bit daunted 😅

I'm a bit behind since I've been busy lately but I just reached chapter 10. I'm aiming to get to chapter 20 tonight.

I've been enjoying it so far. I like all the different voices. I would probably be bored if it was just Atl and Domingo telling the story. I really like how in this universe there's more than one type of vampire. So far we've only been introduced to three subspecies but I'm excited to discover what other type of vampires are out there.

Katie (love---katie) | 576 comments I read Gods of Jade and Shadow as an ebook and absolutely HATED IT. I love audiobooks and I feel like I'm pretty lucky that my brain can handle them, so I tried Mexican Gothic on audio and it was incredible. It was the first book I read this year and it still looks like a strong contender for favorite book of the year.

I already finished Certain Dark Things because I am incapable of sticking to a reading schedule lol. I agree that the different perspectives are so fun to read from! I think Nick in particular is an interesting perspective since it isn't often you get to read directly from the villain's POV.

Trip (shardsofromance) | 29 comments Sorry only got round to starting Friday, but adored first chapter already in love with Domingo and the setting. Intrigued by the idea of various types of vampires, the origins and world knows off them.

Look forward to reading more over next week hopefully, now majority my challenges done got more time 😊

Raquel (mahayhay) | 212 comments That's alright! I started on Monday but am still only about 100 pages in because this week has been hectic at work and I pretty much pass out as soon as I get home.

I also really like the various types of vampires! I think there's 10 different subspecies and I've met 3 so far. Hopefully we get to see all of them!

Raquel (mahayhay) | 212 comments Just reached chapter 26. I'm not really enjoying the story that much...it's not that I find it bad I'm just bored. I feel like nothing has really been happening. It seems like the plot is finally speeding up though after these last two chapters so hopefully this last chunk of the book will be more interesting.

(view spoiler)

Trip (shardsofromance) | 29 comments I've not made much progress, just not got into it yet but hope give another try tonight. The writing style is interesting and I like he multiple povs, how get insight into the villains too. But only read like 3 chapters so far 😂

Feel like a lot of telling going on, but not a lot shown yet so hoping this is the set up and pace picks up.

Raquel (mahayhay) | 212 comments I'm finally done! The ending does become more interesting, but overall the story was kind of meh for me. I probably would've liked it more if it had picked up speed more quickly. Oh well.

Trip (shardsofromance) | 29 comments Awesome! I have read a little more and am intrigued with how the bond shall impact them.

Also despite the age difference, the way Domingo has his street smarts in comparison to Atls more sheltered way of life until recently. Despite being a vampire she is still young and unsure.

He definitely has innoncence about him and loved how he did his research, yet still had this view of them like superheroes from the comics his read.

Intrigued to see more.i think part my problem is just that for me I read physical books so much slower in general. Always forget thats the case as read ebooks more often.
