Yeeeah, fellow Sanderson fan :D
My most recent 5-star was actually a non-fiction book, surprisingly:

Imagine: A Vision for Christians in the Arts

I'm the complete opposite, almost all my books are five stars. XD

I agree that doing something poorly can take as much effort as doing something with excellence. However, that doesn't mean that the results are equal. The participation award for writing the book was awarded when the book was published.
I also have a semi-strict rule for myself to only read books with above a 4-star average rating (and at least 1000 ratings) on Goodreads. I'd rather spend my time reading good literature than reading anything at all (and there is a lot of subpar writing out there!). There's just not enough time to read all the books in the world before I die, so that's how I've chosen to shorten the list.

Some of my favorite books have only average ratings. It just depends on what you enjoy, I think. If it's a book that you know is in your niche, then you should probably think about reading it, even if some other readers didn't like it. If it looks like a book you wouldn't enjoy, though, then you probably shouldn't read it.

Right, that’s why my rule is only semi-strict.

Interesting. Have you read his Invisible Cities? I did, but I don't think I understood it so I didn't enjoy it haha

Also, if anyone is ever looking for a Christiian book about peace, there is one that has made a lasting impression upon many people (myself included) called Searching for and Maintaining Peace: A Small Treatise on Peace of Heart by Jacques Philippe. It's very inspiring, it reallllllyyyyy works, and I think we could all use a little peace in our world today! :)
I read this indie clean romance called Waves Crashing Just Like Me, and it was amazing!! You guys should go and check it out! <3

That one sounds good; I'm going to shelve it. :)
Technically, my last 5-star read was The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner. However, I've read that series several times and this past time was probably my 7th re-read, so not sure it counts!
I've recently been reading books by Intisar Khanani, and she's a great story teller. Her series, The Dauntless Path, is very good! (1st: Thorn; 2nd: The Theft of Sunlight; 3rd: A Darkness at the Door) She writes fantasy, but deals with tough issues in honest, realistic ways. Some situations in the books would probably be best read by older teens. I had my 14-year-old daughter read Thorn, but I want her to wait to read the next 2. She could handle the difficulties, but the philosophical issues raised....I want her to be mature enough to grapple with them and land on the right side.

Ah, that's great!
I have yet to read something by Megan Whalen Turner, but I'm definitely planning on it in the future. Also, I've got thorn checked out right now! Can't wait to read it!

My favorite series, too! Have these books ever been read here? There's a bit of unsavory language, and the last book delves into things I wish it didn't (Sad face), but they are super books otherwise.

Do you know The Goose Girl? It's a retelling of that fairytale. I wasn't familiar with it when I read Thorn, which helped me REALLY like it. (I don't usually like FT retellings.) Let me know what you think.
There's a group on instagram doing a read along now, but they are almost done. They move on to the next book after Thorn, though. Maybe you could join for that one.

Yeah, it took my some time to work out the plot twist. Tbh, I could have done without Merrick's POV but that's just my opinion.
Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys was mine. It's historical fiction, though, not fantasy. It was gripping start to finish!

I understood the twist pretty well. I didn't love Merrick as a character much. He was just plain and normal. I liked his sister, though!
