One, a colonist's wet dream.
Two, boring and monotonous as hell.
Three, utterly pretentious. At one point our narrator is reading a book and his helper (indentured servant, slave?) says "are you enjoying your book, sir?" and our narrator says "yes, very much so." To which the servant replies "I would hope so, it is your book, sir." Our narrator: "oh, so it is." You are reading your own book like "hmm, this is good stuff... oh, it's mine!" Puke.
In another incident our narrator's servant says he wishes he could breathe less so his master could have more air. This is in a scene where they are consuming the last of the ship's oxygen when they are trapped by an iceberg.
Four, did I mention this book is boring as hell?
And wasn't there supposed to be a Kraken!? Maybe that was Moby Dick. I probably should've read that instead.
Also, the title is a misnomer... they are under the sea for twenty thousand leagues. * shrug *
I know what you are thinking... but, Meli, this was groundbreaking in its time. Cool, good for the readers of the late 1800s. I hope they enjoyed endless descriptions of sea life and creatures. And pretentious, rich white men going into people's homes killing their wildlife and acting like they fucking own the place.
I would've not finished if I didn't have to get to Antarctica for Fly the Skies.
