Seasons Greetings from the end of the year - it's nomination time for December's BotMs!

A reminder of the BotM nomination rules:
– Books must be published by the first of the month, be available internationally, and available in print form.
– After 24-48 hours, 8 books from each genre will be chosen at random from the selection, using a random generator online.
– Only ONE nomination per person (EITHER sci-fi OR fantasy).
– If books are part of a series, they must be the first, unless the group has already read the previous book(s). (you can see our previous group reads HERE)
– No authors nominating their own works.
– No self-published or ebook-only books — we want our BotM to be accessible to as many members as possible!

SCI-FI:
1. The Fated Sky by Mary Robinette Kowal
2. The Massacre of Mankind by Stephen Baxter
3. Aurora's End by Amie Kaufman
4. Wild Seed by Octavia E. Butler
5. Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks
6. Ship of Fools by Richard Paul Russo
7. The All-Consuming World by Cassandra Khaw
8. Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert
9. A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.
10. The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers

FANTASY:
1. Made Things by Adrian Tchaikovsky
2. Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman
3. A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher
4. Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb (I'm allowing this based on precedent set with e.g. Raymond E. Feist, but this is technically the first of a sub-series within the wider Elderlings series, however I think you can get away with reading it without having finished the Farseer trilogy)
5. Vorrh by Brian Catling
6. Master Assassins by Robert V.S. Redick
7. The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
8. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
9. Arm of the Sphinx by Josiah Bancroft

I believe it's supposed to be one nomination per person at this point.

Oh, no, my sincerest apologies! This is my very first time participating in BotM nominations and clearly, in my enthusiasm, I didn't read the rules closely/slowly enough. Please forgive me. 🙏🏻

It's fine! Which one do you want to go with?

Thanks, Audrey. I think I'll go with Wild Seed by Octavia E. Butler. It gets described as Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Speculative Fiction, but for this purpose seems most like Sci-Fi to me. Thanks again!

It was just Vorrh which is why it wasn't showing up :)

Looking into this one, it seems as if it might be a self-pub...

Just a couple more SF suggestions please, then I can crack on with polls!

message 24: by Nicolette (new)

Nicolette Horsthuis | 3 comments Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb was my suggestion and reading the comment above... it is absolutely a stand alone trilogy. It has no reference at all to the farseer trilogy, has no characters in common, is not even in the same part of the world. It even has a different magic system from the farseer books, although she may link them all in the final trilogy, I do not know, have not read the last one yet :)

Ray Bradbury Martian Chronicles for Sci Fi. An oldie but goodie :)

message 26: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 793 comments She links them in the third trilogy, but you can read Ship of Magic before Farseer. You'll just get some hints in a different order, but it doesn't spoil anything.

As Johanne said, and having read the entire Elderlings series, it's the hints about the links between trilogies - but as I said above, I'm allowing it as I don't think it will spoil anything :)

(Therefore don't worry about your SF suggestion)

Eneida Paulo | 3 comments Fantasy: The Merciful Crow (The Merciful Crow, #1) by Margaret Owen
Sci-Fi: Ship of Fools by Richard Paul Russo

message 29: by Andrew (new)

Andrew hi. Bit confused what "published the first of the month" means? Otherwise I can suggest some sci fi.

message 30: by Freya, Dragon Rider (new)

Freya (flamecat) | 1835 comments Mod
Hi Andrew, as in it cannot be a book that won't be published until during or after the book of the month period. i.e. if it's not due to be published until 23rd December, you can't nominate it as you'd only have a few days to read it.

Hope that helps!

Freya (flamecat) | 1835 comments Mod
Eneida - only one nomination allowed, I'll go with the SF as we have quite a few for fantasy :)

message 32: by Eneida (new)

Eneida Paulo | 3 comments Sounds good.

message 33: by Andrew (new)

Andrew hi. Sorry, still bewildered. Does it mean we can only pick books published from this year, or any book published, like, ever? thanks

Andrew wrote: "hi. Sorry, still bewildered. Does it mean we can only pick books published from this year, or any book published, like, ever? thanks"

You can't pick a book that is published the month you're nominating it for. So, for example, if you want to read a book that comes out in December of 2021, you can't nominate it for that month.

Also, audio/e book only are not allowed.

message 35: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 793 comments And Andrew: books published before that is fine, no matter the year.

message 36: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Weh (abigailweh) Has this group already read Dune? I am fairly new to this group so I wouldn’t know if you have, but I know I’m planning on reading that as a Sci-fi prompt soon.

According to the group shelf (https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...), it was read in December 2013. Only the first one of the series.

Al Burke (alburke47) | 62 comments The All-Consuming World by Cassandra Khaw by Cassandra Khaw for sci-fi.

message 39: by Hope (new)

Hope | 148 comments As we need more sci-fi, may I nominate Dune Messiah?

message 40: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Okay cool, i'll nominate A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr..

message 41: by HeatherLynn (new)

HeatherLynn | 2 comments For SciFi I nominate The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers

Technically part of a series, but I believe the group has read the earlier books.
