Vanessa This is the first LGBTQ+ book I have ever read and I am so happy that it was because now I'm even more enthusiastic to adventure deeper in the genre. I also wanted to read more books on Greek mythology so this was really good for that as well. The romantic connection between Achilles and Patroclus just was chef's kiss and the writing itself really is exceptional. I also took a college course on greek mythology, this was before I read this book, and when we studied Achilles and Patroclus my professor kept saying the two were very close friends. After reading this I realized he was alluding to a little more than friends lol.

Sruthi This literally is the best book. I may admit I didn't cry over Patroclus's death as I knew it was coming (which killed me when Achilles always went "What has Hector done to me?") But the DETAILS. IT LITERALLY MADE ME FEEL I WAS THERE. The quotes are on point and you can actually see deeper into everyone's feelings. This book was a MASTERPIECE.

Alyex "it's adam and eve not adam and steve" "you're right it's bucky and steve" is now overrated.
"it's adam and eve not adam and steve" "you're right it's achilles and patroclus"
thank you for coming to my tedtalk.

Miranda The Song of Achilles is a beautifully written and heart-warming story. It actually transports the reader to all of the beautiful landscapes that Madeleine Miller meticulously describes in the first half of the book and creates a strong attachment to the characters. From the reviews that I had read, I was actually expecting for the ending of book to be sadder and more tragic but it didn't made me feel that way at all.

Imman THIS. BOOK.
I knew this was a sad book going into it and it lived up to the hype imo, such a tragic yet beautiful story of Achilles and Patroclus. I'm in love!
Also the foreshadowing with the line "what has hector ever done to me?",
Love the writing and plot and Quotes were *chefs kiss*

Neve Omg I'm so glad I made this discussion page! I love being able to see everyone's thoughts and opinions on this book!
Like I swear I cry every time I read it even though I know the ending!
I love it!
I'm deciding whether or not to reread it for the billionth time but idk if I want to be that sad yet haha :)

message 19: by Taya (new) - rated it 5 stars

Taya I dont know if anyone else noticed this, but everytime Achilles and Patroclus grew a bit closer they always talked about ‘this and this‘, which I thought was an expression that did not quite fit with the like writing style? But it was always between those two, yet in the last chapter its when it was used between Patroclus and Thetis when they talked about Achilles.
Idk that made me cry even harder lol, it felt like it could have never been between Patroclus and Achilles ever again :,)

It made me so sad to see Patroclus watch over Achilles in grief.

Neve I just reread it for like the millionth time and still balled like a baby. my heart is broken😭

message 25: by Luna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Luna When you know the ending and it still makes wanna cry you know it's a MASTERPIECE.

Even tho I didn't felt sad because Patroclus died (he died as a hero and we don't mourn heros) but when Thetis finally did something correct for once that is what made me cry,she gave back Achilles his love but she will never meet him again.

Vaidehi It's a beautiful and heartbreaking story! I remember crying a lot:( The writing style is so hypnotic, I loved Miller's prose

Haseeba "Had she really thought I would not know him? I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world."
💔
How my heart went when I read these lines. Beautifully written.

z Favourite book of all time. The way Patroclus describes Achilles and talks about him is unreal, pure beauty. I've read this a month ago and still have not recovered.

'He is half of my soul, as the poets say.'

message 30: by Mel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mel Gk I actually read this book in greek some months ago and I still remember the feelings I got while reading it. The way Patroclus was thinking of Achilles was so touching and pure. Also, when Patroclus dies and Achilles realises and starts crying and screaming out of pain and grief is like hearing his voice in my ears. That's a moment in the entire book I got goosebumps through my spine. But I was really shocked and relieved when eventually Achilles' mother, who didn't like Patroclus, helped them to meet each other again. I am so happy that I read this one.

I have honestly never related this much to a character more than I have related to Patroclus. Putting that much effort and love and passion into a relationship when the other was taking it all for granted. I freaking love Patroclus so much.

THE ENDING THO! *not a spoiler* It was a bittersweet ending and I didn't know whether to cry or rejoice

Patroclus was so easy to love and root for. I feel like he was so understanding and selfless with Achilles. Also, it crazy cause their story has been known and retold but having this book literally brought tears to my eyes. I didn't know I cared about them this much until I read it. I don't think I will love any other pair as much as them. Talk about a Greek tragedy though...
