I believe the implication was that I'm either too old or too uncool to deliver it convincingly. Fortunately I am also too old now to care much what people think about that sort of thing. Coolbeans!

It occurred to me just yesterday that I don't have a digital copy yet. #1 on 2 copies... should be good lol.

I am hopeful of joining in, I have the audio...

For like $13 I was able to get it on kindle and audio combined. So not too shabby :)

That's a great deal! Of course, I could read the hardcover I have sitting 3 feet from me, but that would be too easy.

I'm probably going to have to back out of this one. I'm wayyyyyy overbooked and it keeps piling on...Last thing I need is to start yet another series..

I'm glad you're clearing some space - do it without qualms! The last thing you need is another slump. That's what always happens to me when I have more than 2 obligations at once.

Then thought about it, realized I'm not in over my head.

Oh no, much the opposite - the pinnacle of my life as a reader will be when I pick things off my shelf first. Just me and the book in my hands against the world. It's a much more organic relationship (with books). That said, I'm fully enjoying the audiobook I'm listening to while organizing redundant paperwork.

Fair enough. There is an efficiency that can be achieved with audiobooks that you cannot quite manage with other formats.

For which I'm grateful. It would be hard to justify a channel with only two books read per month lol.

I've been a huge hardcover kick lately. You have me now officially watching an auction for a signed first edition on ebay.....

I have the entire set of Hardcover first editions, bought them as they came out, long time on my TBR. I am happy I'm finally getting to this series.

Started a bit early. Prologue thru Chapter 4.
In the prologue (view spoiler)[ we have Jaffa one of the heads of the rebellion, it's interesting to see his relationship with the other leaders. Great scene with Mother, where the girl was killed by Akataer, and brought back for questioning, and lastly the eerie steel masked person, The Steel Ghost. I have a feeling this is going to be a great antagonist.
The early chapters we meet Captain Marcus d'Ivoire a likable, but definitely burnt out career officer who is commanding the men camped. It will be interesting what happens to Marcus. Also Winter a private who is soon escalated to sergeant, and transferred, from the company where she is hated.
So Winter is hiding that she is a woman, interesting to see how that will also play out.
I think Winter and Marcus are going to be main characters, and drive the story forward.
I get a feel here of a typical military type sci-fi fantasy. I know this is early, but I am enjoying the story and characters. (hide spoiler)]

Got past the prologue on the second try and am mid-1st chapter. Just trying to finish up Age of Ash at the same time :)

i've read this book twice already because i kept pausing the series and needing to restart 😂 maybe third time's the charm? (i really enjoyed it though!)

Prologue: (view spoiler)[ I like the assortment of characters here - all of them somewhat enigmas at this point, but I'm intrigued by them all. The thing with Akataer was weird - his physical description reminded me of Ang (Last Airbender), but then he started messing with the corpse... eew lol. But I do like the indication of some really deep magic. (hide spoiler)]

I do that too. Reading with a group often does help haha.

The initial imagery and vibe spurred the association, but I was quickly disillusioned by the events.

Got this one on the audible site sale! Through chapter 3 so far. Mildy surprised at how (view spoiler)[the dead woman was brought to life... interesting way to do necromantic magic type things

Finished Ch. 3 (view spoiler)[I am liking our main characters thus far. Mostly setup to this point, but the characters and the writing are making it pretty interesting for me. One minor gripe is the plot device of Winter being a woman pretending to be a young man in the military. No doubt this will play out in some important way, I just find it to be rather implausible that someone could hide this effectively in a military deployment setting such that no one knows the truth for what I assume has been months at this point, at the very least. The same plot device was used in The Guns of the South and I had the same thoughts about it. No big deal though, I'm just going with it. (hide spoiler)]

Well I am thru Chapter 10 (view spoiler)[ an enjoying our main characters, especially Winter, how she is a hero in the first battle and promoted to leutentant. So far this is mainly a military fantasy. (hide spoiler)]
