I suppose I'd better check out some of the other books now to read.

I added Demelza - & have read Jeremy Poldark as well. Hope to get to Warleggan within the next couple of months.
We could have a Poldark discussion thread if you like. :)

Book #5

3.5 stars
Oh, how I wish I had read this when I was a child! As an older adult I enjoyed it, but 10 year-old me would have loved it.
Will link to review once I get it written.

Ahem, Carol, you might want to correct the typo...
(It did make me laugh, though, as I was thinking about how unfortunate it was. [snicker])
Oh dear! 😂🙃😂
& that is considered a very offensive word amongst older women in NZ. I was really surprised how readily it is used on the internet.

My 7th pool book, Black Narcissus by Rumer Godden. Four stars for me, reviewed here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

I'm going to start with Demelza as Ross Poldark was one of my favourite reads last year."
Thank you for setting me up and I'm going to start with Demelza too. I love the Poldark books.

Book 4: Death in the Andamans. 3-stars.
Not my favorite of Kaye's mysteries - even though they aren't at all related, I decided to binge all of them and maybe I'd just tired a bit of the formula by this last one? I thought it was a wee bit slow and kept having to check which character was which. But I also enjoyed the setting and didn't suss out the solution way before it was revealed, which is often not the case with mysteries!

Thank you! And now I'll officially check in with the next one -

Book 5: Tom's Midnight Garden. Five stars!
I've been in a slightly grumpy mood off and on this week and decided to combat it this afternoon with a children's book, as that sometimes does the trick. And it did! Although I'm pretty certain that I didn't read this as a kid, it felt familiar and cozy in the way that the best ones (to me) do. Yes, I "knew what was going to happen" virtually from the beginning, but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

Book #4 Black Narcissus
4 stars
Quite bleak, but it suits the landscape which is a major part of the book.

Book #9 Black Narcissus
4★ As Carolien says very bleak, but well written and there is the occasional flash of humour. Finished 15/5

Book #6, Bramton Wick

4 stars, I enjoyed it, some delightful humorous scenes and characters, and I definitely want to read more by this author

I love Tom’s Midnight Garden too :0)

Wonderful review! You’ve made want to read it even more.

My reading schedule has been so overloaded lately that I’ve fallen way behind on my Retro Reads, but August looks better. And I have a holiday that month, so a few books from this list would suit me perfectly!

:0) I’m so behind too, but like you I hope it will all get better from August.
Have a lovely holiday.
I have gotten behind with these threads as well. I thought I owned the Helen MacInnes title - but I don't. I need to get the stepladder out to see if I own the Dorothy Eden one (her books are on my highest shelf!)
Abigail wrote: "Thank you! Going to Vancouver Island with a few friends. Should be lovely."
Have fun!

Oh, have a lovely time!

Be careful on the ladder, lady!
I made a list of ‘pool’ books I’d like to read, beyond my five, and want to get back to them, also!

I very much relate to all of these sentiments! Late spring/early summer have been something else! But, I am finally actually getting into Black Narcissus and hope that finishing that up will get back in the proverbial groove.
Hope the trip is lovely and echoing the being cautious on ladders!

It's just one of those kitchen step ladders, where the top is also a seat. If I don't have the Eden I'm going to have to have another scan of the pool, to see what appeals! :)

This book keeps popping up in my reading radar. Great review.
I guess I need to find a copy :0)

Book 03 - Mrs Harris Goes to Paris & Mrs Harris Goes to New York - 5* (read June)
A simple, delightful, charming, story for those moments when you need a literary hug. A new film adaptation is also coming out mid month :0)

Added your book to the count.
& I do have three Dorothy Eden's - but not this one.
But I do own & have never read, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe & On the Beach.
I'll just have to see which one I feel like in a week or so. :)

It was fun, I thought- if you find the book, I hope you enjoy it!

Great review, Wayne, short and to the point, no spoilers, appreciate it! Like you, I probably saw the movie back in the 80s, but I’m afraid I don’t remember a thing. I think a bigger deal was made at the time about the “Brat Pack” star-studded cast, than that it was a powerful film based on a book about those timeless and important topics (class, budding sexuality, life choices).
