“Oh, God, I can't take this anymore,” I said through gritted teeth. My fangs pierced my lower lip. I tasted blood.
“Push through the pain. Let your body tell you when.”
“The when is now!”
Meghan got up and went to the door. I heard a muffled conversation take place, saw my lover and Meghan enter the room.
“Get behind her, Dephia, and help her push. Sharen is very tired at this point.”
“Sharen, I have faith in you. Let's have this baby.”
Dephia lifted my shoulders onto her knees, and she cradled my head. She whispered into my right ear.
Suddenly, another contraction ripped through my belly.
“No...no..no...”
“YES. Your time is now,” the unity of their voices put me at ease, sort of. The intensity of the pain wanted to bury me. “Hold her shoulders up.”
Again, I tasted blood as I pushed my baby to the outside world. Blood sweat beaded down my face; two pillar candles, both white, sat on the bedside tables, illuminating my face.
“Keep going. Soon your son will be here.”
I was giving birth to a monster; vampire children were born into adult-size bodies. It was so much simpler when I was human. At least, then, I knew my baby could not inflict harm on me after the birth. Sons raped their parents immediately. My body was just a vessel to hold the prick for a month.
I felt the baby move down the birth canal. I screamed. I could no longer feel throbbing; my stomach was burning. Ring of fire my ass! Whoever romanticized the notion of birth had to have been on crack; every baby I gave birth to hurt worse than the last.
My son pressed on my stomach. I screamed again.
