TerryJane | 4038 comments 2022 Member Challenge Ideas

Hello there, group members!

We rely on your creative minds to help us come up with exciting ideas for quarterly and monthly challenges throughout the year. Do you have a fun idea for a challenge? We'd love to hear about it!

Our Yearly Theme for 2022 is Mysteries of the World.

We typically host two monthly challenges each month and two quarterly challenges every three months. In each case, we like for one of each pair to take inspiration from its corresponding theme (monthly or quarterly). Please check the list below and share your theme-based or off-theme challenge ideas whenever you notice a period appears as Seeking ideas.

Monthly Challenges generally have 8-10 prompts or, if an open-prompt challenge, allow for at least that many books. Quarterly Challenges usually have around 15-20 prompts or, if an open-prompt challenge, allow for at least that many books.

Quarterly Themes
1st Quarter: Admiring the Natural World
2nd Quarter: Examining the Mysteries of History
3rd Quarter: Pondering the Paranormal
4th Quarter: Exploring the Unknown

Monthly Themes
January: Reset
February: Fandom
March: Happiness
April: Creativity
May: Media
June: Paris
July: Red
August: Travels
September: Trust
October: Moon
November: Glass
December: Harmony

We have already planned the January and 1st Quarter challenges for 2022, but we look forward to your suggestions for other months and quarters!

Important: Please ensure your privacy settings on Goodreads allow you to receive messages from anyone, so that we can contact you if we select your challenge idea.

TerryJane | 4038 comments FAQs

When are challenges posted and unlocked?

▪ Around a month in advance, each challenge is posted for viewing only, allowing interested members to plan their reading.
▪ Challenges are unlocked about one week prior to their start date, usually around the 25th of the preceding month..

What happens if my challenge idea is chosen?
▪ We can't use every member challenge idea, but we do use many of them.
▪ If we choose your challenge, you’ll have the opportunity to lead your challenge if you wish.
▪ If you'd rather not lead, we can seek a volunteer leader, so there's no pressure there!
▪ When posting a challenge idea, please let us know whether or not you’d like to lead your challenge, if selected.

May I volunteer to lead a challenge that I didn’t suggest?
▪ Absolutely! When a new quarterly or monthly challenge is posted, you might see a note at the bottom of its post seeking a volunteer challenge leader.
▪ If you’re interested, simply send a message to the moderator who posted the challenge.
▪ Please note that members who actively participate in our quarterly and/or monthly challenges are more likely to be recruited.

What does a challenge leader do?
▪ Leading a challenge is a great way to get to know fellow book lovers in this group!
▪ A challenge leader has three responsibilities:
1. Compile a list of all the challenge's participants (please alphabetize the list after the "sign-up rush" settles).
2. Check the participants' comments to update their progress on the list.
3. Encourage and congratulate participants as they strive toward and complete their respective goals.
▪ There is no need to update every time you notice a participant has commented.
▪ A weekly update is fine for a monthly challenge, and two or three updates per month for a quarterly challenge.

What if a participant posts their progress after the challenge ends?
▪ There may be a few stragglers who post their final progress update after the challenge ends.
▪ A week after your monthly or quarterly challenge ends, please check your challenge thread to congratulate any late finishers.
▪ After that week, whether you do a final update of your Participants List is up to you.

We look forward to hearing your challenge ideas for 2022!

Amy (Other Amy) | 629 comments I am so glad to see this post, because I have had the BEST Goodreads idea I have ever had and I think you might like it too. I propose the "Counting Stars" challenge (which probably fits best with the March: Happiness theme). This would be a challenge where instead of counting books or pages read, you would count the stars of your rating, so as to encourage people to read the books the think will bring them joy. (So reread a favorite, catch up on a favorite author or series, or anything really you think will rack up those high stars.) Stars might be a bit harder to hit than just books would, since you might have to read a few extra to make up for some lower ratings during the month. Our really voracious readers might like that though. (On the other hand, children's books, graphic novels, and other reads that are sometimes limited would be perfectly acceptable, so maybe it would not be so hard.) I am willing to lead the challenge.

Carri Carey | 1016 comments For February (fandoms) - open-prompt

Read books that have been made into movies or tv shows. Then discuss the show/movie and compare to the book. We all know most books are better than the show, but sometimes the production turns out way better!
The book can be a traditional book, comic book, graphic novel, or even a playscript.

If chosen, I would love to lead! 😍 Thanks!

message 9: by D.L. (new)

D.L. | 1515 comments Fandom Ideas:

Fandom Terms

TASKS:

"Fans are great. Fandom is weird." - Terry Pratchett

1. Fandom: The term used for the collective of fans for any given work, person, or another thing, that came together for mutual benefit... Do a buddy read with someone this month or read a book featuring a group of characters united for a cause.

2. Fangirl: Someone describing herself as a fangirl is usually expressing enthusiasm for their favorite subject... Re-read a favorite book or read one that you have heard others rave about.

3. Fan Convention: Or just Convention or Con. This is where fans of a particular franchise, creator, or work all meet together, discuss it and ask questions to the stars. A number turn up in costume... Read a book involving travel or a book featuring someone on the cover in costume or wearing a colorful outfit.

4. Fanon: Fans' interpretation of details not explained or shown in the actual work... Read a fiction book or an alternate history book.

5. Friendly Fandoms: The fandoms of two different works get along rather well, to the point that being a fan of one work makes it likely you're a fan of the other... Read a book about friendship or a book in a genre you particularly love.

6. Furry Fandom: A furry is a fan of anthropomorphic animal characters (or "anthros", as they commonly abbreviate it to). The majority of the fandom consists of people who enjoy fiction and art revolving around anthropomorphic animal characters, ranging from independently written stories and comic books to established, mainstream franchises, with Sonic the Hedgehog, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pokémon, The Lion King, etc... Read a book about animals or art.

7. Fan Fiction: Fan Fiction is a form of Alternate or Expanded Universe created by the fans of a work, rather than the work's original creator... Read a book about books/writing or a book in a spin-off series.

8. Unpopular Popular Character: The fanbase loves a single character but the creators hate it... Read a book that has lower than a 3.5 rating on Goodreads or has less than 500 reviews.

9. Fandom Heresy: If you disagree with a viewpoint most other fans have, the rest of the fandom will turn on you... Read a book from the Favorite Books That Were Once Banned list or on a topic you're unfamiliar with or uncertain about.

10. Shipping: Rooting for fictional romance to happen... Read a love story or a book with a happy ending.

(I would prefer not to lead but I will if needed)

Robynne Lozier | 344 comments Suggestion for Fandom - February - Geekerella by Ashley Poston.

The world of cosplay and fan fiction is the perfect setting for a story about believing in the impossible. Geekerella is not only a love story between two characters but a love story to the fandom community and the sacred bond (in this case, the obsession with a retro sci-fi show named Starfield) that binds them.

Book 1 in a series

Hi, Robynne! This looks like a great nomination for the February Group Read, but you've posted it in Member Challenge Ideas thread. Nominations for February's Group Read will open on December 1st. You will find a link in the December newsletter, or you can watch for the thread to open in the Group Reads folder on our discussion board.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, and can't wait to see all the Fandom nominations. It should be a fun month. 🦸‍♀️🦹‍♀️😃

Theresa | 844 comments My idea for the February 2022 challenge

I’m Your Biggest Fan

Do you have a favorite singer, actor/actress, athlete, or other celebrity? How about a challenge to show your loyalty? Read books that relate to them in some way.

Example: Elvis Presley: He was born in January, so read a book published in January.
He was in the movie “Blue Hawaii.” Read a book with blue on the cover, or a book set in Hawaii.
He recorded the song “All Shook Up” So maybe read a book with any of those words in the title.

You choose the celebrity. You choose the books, based on what you know about the celebrity.

I am willing to lead if this challenge idea is chosen.

Carmen | 8125 comments Hola!
My idea for March - Happiness

GET YOUR DAILY “D.O.S.E.” OF HAPPINESS

The happy brain chemicals that make you feel good:

😊 DOPAMINE: also known as the “feel-good” hormone
• Enables motivation, learning, and pleasure
• Gives you determination to accomplish goals, desires, and needs

😍 OXYTOCIN: often called the “love" hormone, oxytocin is essential for childbirth, breastfeeding, and strong parent-child bonding.
• Feeling of trust, motivates you to build and sustain relationships
• Known as “Cuddle or Love Hormone," plays a role in bonding, increases with kissing, cuddling, and sex

😉 SEROTONIN: helps regulate your mood as well as your sleep, appetite, digestion, learning ability, and memory
• Feeling significant or important among peers
• Calm form of accepting yourself with the people around you

😂 ENDORPHINS: are your body’s natural pain reliever, which your body produces in response to stress or discomfort. Endorphin levels also tend to increase when you engage in reward-producing activities, such as eating, working out, or having sex
• Releases a brief euphoria to mask physical pain
• Response to pain and stress that alleviates anxiety and depression

Read as many books as you want inspired by your daily “D.O.S.E.” of happiness!

(I'm willing to lead if chosen)

Theresa, this is SUCH an amazing idea!!!

Not related to the theme, but I would love the Chain Reaction challenge (each book you read has to be connected to the last one in some way) to be brought back next year!

Happy to lead if needed :)

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4758 comments Idea for March challenge based on the theme of happiness. Would be happy to lead it if required

Oh the places you'll go!
Every year, the United Nations produces a World Happiness Report which uses a number of factors to decide the happiest countries in the world. For this challenge, you are invited to read books set in or by an author who was born/lives in any of the top 15 happiest places of 2021.
1. Finland
2. Denmark
3. Switzerland
4. Iceland
5. Netherlands
6. Norway
7. Sweden
8. Luxembourg
9. New Zealand
10. Austria
11. Australia
12. Israel
13. Germany
14. Canada
15. Ireland

PS. I know monthly challenges like 8-10 prompts but I felt it was a bit too European so chose to expand my list

Navya, perhaps you could write up a suggestion for an off-theme challenge for a month with a chain reaction event such as physics or dominos. Or maybe it could fit as an on-theme challenge in May (Media) with a tie to a book, TV or film, like Pay It Forward or something similar. I look forward to seeing where you go with this.

Sure :) Maybe I will suggest -

Mind Maps

Create your own reading adventure by using the previous book as a stepping stone. Each book you read for the challenge should have a connection with the last book, by some link in content, author or even by something personal to you!

For example, I can create a map like this:

Starting with

The Fellowship of the Ring: A classic of the fantasy genre
⬇️
Piranesi: A fantasy novel; won Women's Prize for Fiction
⬇️
Half of a Yellow Sun Another Women's Prize for Fiction winner; by a Nigerian author
⬇️
My Sister, the Serial Killer: also by a Nigerian author; I read a copy passed to me by my friend
⬇️
The Three-Body Problem: Passed to me by the same friend; translated fiction
⬇️
Breasts and Eggs: Also translated fiction
..

The number of books and the connections between them will depend on the reader :)

I will suggest this either for August's theme (Travels) or as an off-theme monthly/quarterly challenge.

I really like the idea of it as a Pay It Forward challenge for May (Media) as well. In that case, maybe the starting point (for selecting the first book) can be another piece of media. Like in the example map above, I start with Fellowship of the Ring, because I love/recently watched that movie.

Happy to take it either way, or for other suggestions ^_^

BookishlyWise | 302 comments I want to suggest an idea for "Signs of Science" :) We can use this a quarterly challenge idea or a monthly for any month that mods deem fit.
If we have it for a quarter - I think it suits Q4 best.
We can have sub themes under it as well :
Fantastic Non-Fiction
Readers can pick any non-fiction related to any topic of their choice related to science.
Nature is Nurture
Fiction or Non-Fiction books based on Environment, Climate change, ecosystems, Nature, lost cities of the world, extreme adventure, Animal world etc.
Intriguing World
This sub-theme can focus on any of the science topics such as Physics, Biology, Environment, Chemistry, Technology. readers can choose any fiction or non-fiction related to forensic thrillers, hi-tech sci-fi, Genetics related, Outer space, or anything you can think of where science plays a pivotal role.

My only motivation behind repeated request for science related challenge is that this might push many of us to learn more about something that already is so intertwined in our lives, but many us havent picked a book on these subjects since college :)

I wonder if it's possible to have a similar challenge year-round. Every month readers can sign up to mail/receive a book. Yes, there is the catch of having to mail out a book plus fees, for a couple of bucks. But the idea of receiving a book in the mail can be a monthly present year around. Readers will have the option of selecting at least 3 genres, ebook, new, or used copy.

I think "Chain Reaction" is a wonderful idea for April: Creativity.
It's a good way to exercise our own creative minds connecting books to form a chain reaction.

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4758 comments SNAKES AND LADDERS
The board game should be familiar to many and I propose this to help tackle our TBR piles. Possibly fits for April (creativity) or a quarterly one. So, imagine a 5x5 grid (or bigger?), everyone starts at square 1 and the aim is to reach the end of the board by the end of the challenge.

* Each book you read moves you forward one space.

* The Ladders (moves you closer to the goal quicker)
- read a book that can be included in another group challenge or group/buddy/TBR twin read - move forward an additional 2 spaces
- read a book over 500 pages - move forward an additional 3 spaces
- read a book that has been on your TBR pile for more than two years - move forward an additional 5 spaces

* The Snake:
- any book you buy/add to your TBR pile during the challenge means you must move back 3 spaces (but if you finish reading it in that time, you can move forward one space only, not to be counted as a ladder task)

Each book only counts once. You can only do one move per book.

Example:
Start at square 1.
I read Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch which moves me to square 2.
Then: Pride and Prejudice which even though it's a buddy read, I've also owned it for more than two years so decide to count it towards the latter only. I can move forward 1 space plus 5 to take me to square 8.
But: I buy two books so I have to move back (2 x3) 6 spaces back to square 2...
etc.

I do realise this will make it a bit tricky to keep track of actual books read and it may just have to be a list of participants.

Carmen and Navya:

Julia posted a Connect the Dots challenge in the Blogs/Vlogs, Events & Challenges folder that is a chain reaction type of challenge. You may enjoy that one!
