25.2 - Tien's Task: New Year New Goals

This is a 2 book task. Pick two options below, and read one book for each option.

REQUIRED: State the options you used when you post.

1. Dust off some old books.
Read a book that has been on your TBR for at least 5 years.

NOTE: Your To-Be-Read list may be your GR shelf, a custom GR shelf, or an off-GR list.
REQUIRED: please state what list you are using and when book was added to your personal TBR

2. Have fun with favourite tropes.
Read a book from one of these lists about my favourite tropes:
Girls Disguised as Boys
Friends to Lovers From the first 25 pages of the list.
REQUIRED: please state the list you used and the page on which your book is found.

3. Continuing series.
Read a book in a series that is the third (3rd) or higher in series. Series name & number must be noted in grey parenthesis under book title.

TraceyL | 1069 comments I've only been reading as a hobby for about 3 years now. What would my options be for having a book on my TBR for 5+ years? Can it just be a book that I've heard of before that is 5+ years old?

message 6: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2313 comments LOL I was going to do 10+ years and thought that's probably too long so reduced to 5+ and I see that even then it's not quite enough!

I didn't specify GR list as I think some people may have written list or spreadsheet somewhere however as you've only taken up reading as a hobby 3 years ago, you probably won't have any of these?

If it's a book you heard of 5+ years ago, I'd say yes, but if it's a book you've heard last week but it's published 5+ years ago then no. Sorry, not sure how helpful this is.

TraceyL | 1069 comments Thanks, Tien. Yes, I was thinking of picking something that I was already aware of 5+ years ago, like a classic or something hugely popular at the time, even if I wasn't really reading anything or had a TBR at that time.

Robin P | 1627 comments Interesting, similar questions are coming up on Cat's task since it also addresses backlog. I'm kind of surprised the moderators didn't pick up on the issue of people being newer to tracking their reading, new to GR, etc. It's no problem for me as I have a backlog dating from 10 years myself!

But I will put in the same question I did on Cat's task, which is that I don't have a shelf called TBR and I don't use Want to Read that way. I have a shelf called Owned, which means I purchased it or got it as a gift and haven't yet read it. I use Want to Read for books I don't own but that I might want to pick up someday or get from a library. Other people might call their shelf "Backlog" or "Stuff I really have to read" or something else. I assume we can just explain that when we post for that task. Is that right?

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2313 comments Robin, whether you call it 'owned' or 'backlog' -as long as it's a list of books you may be interested in reading one day, I see that as TBR.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3946 comments I have nothing that i have wanted to read or Owned for 5 years and not read. I deliberately keep my TBR / one-day bookshelves small as i become overwhelmed if i think I am not getting to something on them.
Much as i dislike lists i will find something from options 2 and 3 instead and I am sure when i get to them i will enjoy them - even if i heave a sigh now. I have loads of series to finish so that works well. I know It is hard to find a task that suits everyone

Totally!! Which is why there are options... hopefully, everyone will find a combination which works best for them :)

Teri-K I just want to say Thanks for this task. During Covid I made a list of books I owned but hadn't read, with the intention of reading them soon. I kind of stopped looking at it; this challenge will help me get back to it!

I'm afraid to do that. The number of books I own is downright scary - even to me.

message 14: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 1627 comments GR has counted the list for me. Over 400 books I own in one format or other and over another 300 I say I would like to read someday! This will sound weird, but when I think about not being around years in the future, the first thing I think of isn't my family but all the books I will be missing!

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2313 comments Well done, @Teri-K - definitely a good way to spend lockdown (buried in book!)

@Aprilleigh - Same!!! I'm working v. hard at getting numbers down of physically own copies and I've just reached my goal (it's still at a scary number) so I'm hoping to reach the next ;)

@Robin P - errr... I'd not like to say how much I actually have on my TBR ha ha ha
