Radhika Venkatesan | 15 comments I rate this book a 5/5!
The author did a marvelous job with incorporating in in-depth imagery, numerous themes, and great character development. For instance, the readers get a detailed view of the houses of each character: Mariam, Mariam's father, Rasheed, etc. More so, he vividly describes each setting in the story as it changes, which allows the readers to flow the novel more properly. In all, his descriptive imagery allows the readers to become a part of the novel.
Next, some themes I noticed within this book were love, loyalty, shame, reputation, friendships. etc. For instance, the life of Mariam's mother clearly encases the theme of shame as she is tragically secluded by a town due to her affair with Jalil. More so, Jalil represents the theme of reputation as he isolated his 'illegitimate' daughter and gets her married off at an young age in order to save his name. Last but not least, Mariam and Laila build upon the theme of friendship and loyalty as they protect and provide mental support to one another amid the harassments of their husband, Rasheed. In all, each main character portrays at least one of the major themes in the novel.
Finally, the character development in this book was well-done as well! For an example, at the beginning of the novel we see young Mariam as an innocent and playful child; however, towards the end, Mariam learns the norms of the society and portrays a more mature and secluded character.
In all, the novel is worthwhile to read!
