Margie | 988 comments Where: Place Portraits

Continue 2021 goal of reading books that paint an interesting picture of a city or country (past or present). I'm looking for creative nonfiction rather than fiction with a strong sense of place or travel guides. For me the most successful books are some blend of memoir, history, travel, journalism.

Progress: 4/12

2003 Spain: The Tomb in Seville: Crossing Spain on the Brink of Civil War
2020 Central Asia: Red Sands: Dispatches and Recipes from Unsung Cities and Open Steppe

Margie | 988 comments Where: The Fall of the Ottomans and the Making of Post-War Europe and the Modern Middle East (aka How Did We Get Here?)

Map: https://www.britannica.com/place/Otto...
Wide subject but I'm going to give it a start. I'm interested in the geopolitical changes to the area that was the Ottoman Empire at its peak beginning roughly with Greek Independence in 1830 through the recognition of Israel by the UN in 1949 (but expect I'll stumble on some books about earlier/later events.)

Subjects include Greek independence, Balkan Wars, WWI , establishment of Turkey as a republic, British and French Mandates, Israel/Palestine and Jordan/Lebanon/Syria. Books include nonfiction and fiction set in these times/places.

Progress: 10/25

2021 The Ottomans: Khans, Caesars, and Caliphs
2021 The Greek Revolution: 1821 and the Making of Modern Europe
2006 The Janissary Tree
1962 The Guns of August
2015 The Fall of the Ottomans: The Great War in the Middle East
2015 The Ottoman Endgame: War, Revolution, and the Making of the Modern Middle East, 1908 - 1923
2004 Birds Without Wings
2001 Paris, 1919: Six Months that Changed the World
2016 The Silence of Scheherazade
2006 Twice a Stranger: The Mass Expulsions That Forged Modern Greece and Turkey
