Yes, it just goes to show that not all of the trends are worth following, whether it be food or books. We just have to do what suits ourselves. :-)

I agree; I'd prefer to live without meat than without dairy. I know somehow I'd manage, I'm just not sure how. Just like I know I'd survive if I couldn't see, but I'm not sure how. Audiobooks would become so much more important.

Yes, I have a friend who keeps saying, "This one tastes almost the same," and it has become a joke, it never tastes the same to me. I have texture issues with vegan cheese also. Like you, there are only one or two of the ones that I've tried that I'd willingly try again.

My vegan neighbour likes to try and push most vegan stuff on me saying 'it's so versatile' - well, so is the dairy equivalent! Be grateful I'm vegetarian and will eat some vegan meals rather than trying to force things on me - I dread two of my vegan friends buying me treats, as they will only buy me vegan sweets/chocolate etc, some to be fair have been nice, but not all of it

I like that better. I did add it.

Romance as the center and pushing it on the reader, is just irritating.

Haha, you hang tough, Desley! I know we are all guilty at times when we are overly enthusiastic about something we LOVE that we believe that all other people will also like, BUT it is difficult when we feel like we have no way to politely decline our friends kindnesses. I actually think it is wonderful and adorable that my friend has made it her mission to find me vegan food that I like, and I really appreciate her efforts because she has found some great food that I might not have easily found on my own. But it breaks my heart just a little bit when I have to tell her that something isn't to my taste. She just seems so disappointed and I know she's gone to so much effort on my behalf, but I can't change my palate. Although it is my policy to try something I don't care for at least seven different times or ways.

So glad you added it, hope you like it. I agree with you about Romance.

If the book is listed as a Romance, no problem, I expect that the romance in the story should be driving the plot points.

But, if it is in the Fantasy section, the fantasy portion of the story should be driving all the plot points. Sure, we all have romance in our lives, so there can be some of that in there too, but in general, if I pull out the romance from the Fantasy book, there really should be a Fantasy story left. I wasn't sure there was a lot left with Children of Blood and Bone, but I did not feel that way with The Gilded Ones. In The Gilded Ones, there's a whole story there.

Lea (leaspot) | 3641 comments April Month End Report

Books Read: 9 books this month and 58* year to date
*Includes loads of children's books and short stories

Books from Filling in the Gaps: 40/100; 2020 Books 0/7, 2021 Books 3/11, and 37/82

Books from 12+4 Challenge: 7/16

Previously discussed:

The Long Haul
The Anthropocene Reviewed
City of Ink
The Lost Wife
The Gilded Ones

Recently Finished:

Edmund Bertram's Diary - So, I get that we are supposed to like Fanny and Edmund in Mansfield Park, and certainly we do like them more than the rest of Bertram family (whose wealth is generated from Antigua!) and the avaricious Crawfords, but can I just say that I hope I never have to suffer through a social gathering with those two. They are boring. Reading the story from Edmund's perspective didn't help. 2 STARS

The Mysterious Island - So, this book has three parts and has been published separately. It is 723 pages long. It's a tale of five Civil War prisoners who take a balloon to escape and end up on unchartered island in the Pacific. It's like Robinson Crusoe, but there's a mystery going on too. I liked it. 3 STARS

The Thursday Murder Club - I really wished I had someone to read this book with, because I have so many questions. I really enjoyed the book, but there are a lot of characters and red herrings. It isn't really a cozy mystery, it kept me on my toes. Still, I enjoyed the book.

My main issue is (view spoiler) I do hope this inconsistency gets explained in the next book, which I will likely read.

And I don't really understand the motives of (view spoiler) I guess that's OK, people don't have to make sense to me. :-) 3 STARS

The Robots of Dawn - This book is super long, as compared to The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun and about half of it was about stuff that wasn't that interesting to me. I was more interested about the mystery of who destroyed the humaniform robot than trying to understand the cultural mores about sex on each of the planets. The last chapter was pretty good though. 2.5 STARS

Currently reading:

Old School - I'm about halfway through this Wimpy Kid book (#10), and it probably won't be a favorite, unless the last half of the book picks up.

Six of Crows - Pretty graphic violence for a YA novel, but I am really enjoying this one. It's about a team of six criminals who are trying to pull off a heist and so far, it has been a lot of fun.

Midnight Sun - I'm about 10% in. This one will take awhile, the book is chunky and my interest level in this one is varying. It is a book I usually don't mind using to help me sleep, because basically, I've read the entire book from the other perspective, so I know what is going to happen. I thought that Meyer would try to redeem Edward here and make him a bit less creepy, but so far, the creep factor is actually even higher, in my opinion.

Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life - Still reading...

Holy Bible: New International Version - I'm on target to finish this by the end of the year.

Progress on the Whack-a-Mole Series Situation –

1. Mike Daley/Rosie Fernandez (8)
**I was excited about this until I realized that five of my series have new books coming out in May!

Series That Added Books Last Year with number of books I still need to read in that series: (so you can see how I really made no progress!)

Yay! Glad you are enjoying Six of Crows. To me, it should not be listed as YA, simply because the characters are younger adults. The themes and tone of the book is definitely not for every teen. I loved both books.

I did enjoy quite a bit of The Robots of Dawn, I don't want to give the impression that it wasn't a good book. The last few chapters were great. I just felt like there was such a large portion of the book devoted to some things that weren't as interesting to me.

I love the book so far too and I completely agree with you about the themes and tone of the book. I don't understand why books are considered YA if the characters are young. It seems like some people are very sensitive about not wanting teens to read about people having sex, but I personally would rather have them read that than have them read about gouging someone's eye out, for example.

I literally squirmed. But I didn't think it was going to happen in a YA novel, so...there was that. Always expect the unexpected. I am about 70% of the way through the book and I really want to know what happens!!!

Everyone says start with Shadow and Bone, which introduces us to the Grishaverse; but I don't think it was necessary. Both books were engaging and more adult than YA, to me. It is violent, but not horror-violent, if that makes sense. I think it is more along the lines of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone, which is considered YA, but reads adult. Also, in terms of the fantasy level.

Lea (leaspot) | 3641 comments Ioana wrote: "Another good month, congrats! Would I like Six of Crows? On my TBR for many years, just afraid to try another fantasy book..."

Let me finish the book first to make sure there isn't a hard left turn in the last quarter of the book...but...I think this may be a series you could enjoy. And it is only two books.

I agree with Alondra that you don't need to start with Shadow and Bone, especially since you are very picky about your Fantasy novels. I thought Shadow and Bone was good, but not great. Six of Crows is much better.

Six of Crows reminds me a little bit of Pirate's of the Caribbean. The main characters are young criminals and are trying to do something illegal. But the government/rules have been corrupted and I didn't mind watching them try to beat the system.

I know you have been concerned about the YA characters being annoying, especially the young ladies. I don't think either of the main female characters are annoyingly self absorbed or damsels in distress in this book. They both are integral to the team and are needed for their skills.

So far, while some of the characters have definitely made decisions I would not have made, they have not made decisions that make no sense and take me out of the story.

Give it a try when you're in the mood, I haven't identified anything yet that would make me think this series is a no go for you. :-)

Lea (leaspot) | 3641 comments May Month End Report

Books Read: 12 books this month and 70* year to date
*Includes loads of children's books and short stories

Books from Filling in the Gaps: 47/100; 2020 Books 0/7, 2021 Books 3/11, and 44/82

Books from 12+4 Challenge: 9/16

Recently Finished:

Old School - The next installment in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. This one just didn't hit right for me, it wasn't terrible, but it was kind of forgettable. 2 STARS

Six of Crows - What a great start to this new series. The action was non stop and I personally could not believe this was YA, due to some of the violence, but it was a heckofa lot of fun. I'm reading through the works of Leigh Bardugo, and I very much doubt she will write anything I enjoy more than this book, although she is most especially welcome to try. 4 STARS

The Blue Bistro - Buddy read with Alissa and Denise. I think they both enjoyed it a bit more than I did. The descriptions of food in this book were unforgettable. So yummy. But, I didn't like the main characters and the contrived situation was a bit annoying. Not my favorite Elin Hilderbrand novel, but I will be reading more. 2.5 STARS

Killing the Killers: The Secret War Against Terrorists - I wasn't buying everything that Bill O'Reilly was selling, but there were still some important stories that were told here, that don't get told all the time. I give leave to apply my own discount factor on some of the details and motivations, but it doesn't stop me from reading these books. 2.5 STARS

Colonel Brandon's Diary - This is another series book, a version of Sense and Sensibility from the perspective of Colonel Brandon. It was a valiant attempt for the author to persuade me to try and get interested in the Colonel Brandon/Marianne Dashwood story. That part of the story never made too much sense to me. This helped, but didn't win me over. 3 STARS

Rock Paper Scissors - This is about a couple who wins a weekend away in Scotland and goes to try to salvage their marriage. It is set in the Scottish highlands and this one is a lot fun. I liked it very much. 3 STARS

Robots and Empire - Well, I think I've finally finished this series, although I could no doubt scare up a few short stories and may do that later. Even after Elijah Baley's death, his wisdom lives on in his ancestors, robots and friends. And there is a planet here called Baleyworld. This was fun. 3 STARS

The Blind Side - This is one of the few times when I can actually say that I saw a movie first. This is the story about Michael Oher, a homeless child who was adopted out of that life because of the physical attributes he possessed, size, speed, agility. I enjoyed the book better than the movie, it explained a lot about the change in football strategy over my lifetime. 4 STARS

Around the World in Eighty Days - A silly story about a bet as to whether a man could travel across the globe in just eighty days. I'm serious when I say that Mr. Fogg could have made it home in about half that time, if he just ditched his annoying valet Passepartout and other companions. It surprised me because it was a bit slap stick. 3 STARS

The Man Who Died Twice - This is the second in the Thursday murder club series, and while this book did not answer any of the issues that I had previously raised, I enjoyed it a bit more. The mystery was a bit more sensible this time around and I knew the main group of characters, and enjoyed the new additions. I will read the next book in the series after it comes out in September. 3 STARS

Long Bright River - Wow. I really liked this one. It's set in Philadelphia and about two sisters, one who is a police officer and one who cannot shake a drug addiction. Someone is murdering young prostitutes/drug addicts and Mickey is worried about her sister Kasey. It was on Obama's Reading List last year, and it did not disappoint. 4 STARS

Double Down- Another Wimpy Kids book. So the formula is pretty standard at this point, with the first part of the book not being very funny, but the second part of the book becoming more my taste. Roderick was hilarious this time around. 2.5 STARS

Currently reading:

Midnight Sun - Finished the Twilight series after month end. I don't think anyone needs to rush to read this one. Edward was in his head so much in this book overanalyzing and overthinking every little detail. It was so boring. I really thought that Meyer would try to salvage her hero since everyone seems to be complaining about how controlling he was, but I swear she doubled down. He is 10x more creepy in this book than he was in the first book. The only reason to read this one is the baseball game. If you want, just read that part. And then pretend the rest of this book never happened. Maybe the whole series - LOL. 1 STAR

Crooked Kingdom - Still good, but not nearly as gripping as Six of Crows for my money.

All the President's Men - This book has a lot of details around the reporting of the Watergate scandal. It's very interesting.

Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life - Still reading...

Holy Bible: New International Version - I'm on target to finish this by the end of the year.

Asimov wrote some excellent stuff. All the President's Men was a great book and movie. Enjoy your June reading."

Thanks, I rarely watch movies, but I think I want to see All the President's Men after I read the book. The book is so dense, maybe watching the movie with less of the details will help some of the main points stick in my head more. Hope June is a good reading month for you, too, Bill!

My email just let me know that the ebook is waiting for me. Nothing for me to do but to start reading it🤷🏻‍♀️

I've been successfully avoiding Leigh Bardago's Six of Crows but now you're going to force me to read it. And I'll probably really enjoy it. Sigh 🤣"

I've been avoiding her for years, Lillie. I just didn't want to work on anymore fantasy series when I have so many that I seriously need to get back to. Then she won the GRC Awards for Ninth House, so I started there. No other books in that series yet. Safe. Then, she won for Rule of Wolves, and I was just going to read that duology. Literally didn't put the other books on my list, was being kind of snippy about it. Until a friend told me that I should give up and read all her books OR I should just read the Six of Crows duology and skip the rest, it was the best one. I got worn down and decided to read the whole thing so that I could make my own assessment, but darn it, my friends are always right. So that's how I'm ending up reading a whole mess of series that aren't even on my list.

And now it is my duty to make sure that you don't miss out, as I nearly did. :-) :-) :-)

Happy reading.

Hope we haven't hyped it too much and you like it. :-)

Indeed. Good point. Judge on your own merits of course.

Exactly. No pressure to have to like what we like.

But I seriously think most fantasy readers would love that book, it might be the most solid fantasy recommendation that I've had in years.

On the other hand, there are people out there who don't like The Hobbit, so outliers exist. Sometimes I'm the outlier, too. Sorry Judy Blume! :-)

😂😂 me every single time I look at everyone’s updates. I’ve read 87 books this year and only 38 have been off of my challenge lists! Keep telling myself that it’s ok, we’re not even half way through the year yet. And then I start reading something not on my lists…And even worse, because of certain posters (ahem, looking at you and Alissa), now I’m starting to think about next year’s list. I love this group! ❤️
