These classics are really good; so you should enjoy them.

Rebecca is my favorite.

Good luck and happy reading

Lea (leaspot) | 3662 comments I tried to get caught up on classics for over the past ten years or so, and I think you've picked some winners. The books I haven't read yet are The Woodlanders and The Optimist's Daughter. My favorite is probably North and South, but so many of the books on your list rated highly for me. Hope you have the same experience on those, and a completely different experience on As I Lay Dying, which is the only book on your list that didn't click for me. Hope you enjoy all, including that one!

John We read As I Lay Dying in college English class. I wasn't wild about myself, but Faulkner is a terrific writer. Impressive list - good luck!

Missy | 4 comments I started Gone With the Wind (pg. 160). It is a little slow as this book has pretty little print. So far I am enjoying it, she is just getting to Atlanta.

message 15: by Lillie (new)

Lillie | 1700 comments Nice list. I keep thinking I’d like to read more classics but somehow only one or two usually make my challenges. Too many shiny new books for me, I get distracted.

I have read several on the list, Gone with the Wind, The Color Purple, Beloved, The Secret Garden, The Great Gatsby, Little Women, Jane Eyre, I Know Why a Caged Bird Sings and Rebecca. The last two are my favorites. Looking forward to what you think about them. Enjoy :)

Kim. E. | 133 comments I read Gone With The Wind when I was 16, but only in the last couple years did I start reading others so I'm interested in your thoughts as you go through this list.

I thought Rebecca was so good I would read it again

That book is so good, and its a hoot. I, like Kim, read it when I was a teenager. Had some very spirited conversations in school about this book.

Missy | 4 comments Finished Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell last night. It was sooo good. Scarlett is quite the selfish little thing I will say. But I can see a lot of thinking, manners, and ideas still alive living in Deep South Mississippi today. After growing up in the North (Iowa) - yes I am what they call a Damn Yankee because I have now lived here 17 years - it definitely shows me a different perspective. Very interesting, entertaining, comical, and sincere. Enjoyed it very much.

Lea (leaspot) | 3662 comments Congratulations, Gone with the Wind is quite the long read! I agree about Scarlett, she's such a strong and selfish character. But, mealy mouthed Melanie wields her own sort of strength and is far shrewder than Scarlett in some ways. It's such an interesting book, I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

I read this many years ago, before living in US, so a lot of nuances were lost on me, I'm sure. Maybe I should re-read it, with new eyes. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

Missy | 4 comments I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Maya Angelou's Autobiography, #1) by Maya Angelou

I listened to this book, narrated by the author. It was a story of her shuffling homes starting at 5, the strong women in her family, in her life, and the determination she had to break the barriers in her life.

In all 3.5 stars.

One of my favorites; and I agree; Mississippi has not changed. They fight progress with every inch of their fiber. My dad lived there and my mom is still there. Anyway; the story is well written and actually nicely paced.
