MY MICHIGAN HERO - essay for america & me contest
My Michigan Hero during Covid
When everyone thinks of the pandemic, what usually comes to mind? I know that most of my friends would say “No school!”, “Had to stay home.” Many might even say that it was the worst time in their entire lives. But for me it was nice. Now, I need to explain this properly. It wasn’t great that people were getting sick and couldn’t see their family members, but for me being the busy 6th and 7th grader that I was, it was nice to have time that I could actually spend with my family. Because of that, my entire family is my Michigan Hero. They are what got me through some of the hardest times in my life.
My mom is one of the busiest people I know. Before Covid was brought into the light I was dancing 4 days a week for 5 hours a night. Since my dad was always working, all the duties of driving were passed down to my mother. Back and forth from home to the dance studio. On top of that, I have a younger brother, and he was really into sports then, too. So that added more for my mother to do. Through it all, she just kept going. She never complained once and was always there if my brother or I needed help. Not only that, but she had several jobs then, too. So while we were doing school virtually, she was working hard for our family.
My brother was a whole different ball game. You’d get the joke if you knew that my brother plays baseball. My brother is 2 and a half years younger than me, so if you have siblings that are only a little bit younger than you, you know exactly where I’m going with this. He is a rambunctious ball of energy, and he has to get all that energy out some way. So while I was in my Zoom classes, doing my work, forgetting to mute myself, all you heard in the background was my brother laughing and my mom telling him to be quiet. Having a brother can be both entertaining and sometimes annoying. Overall, he’s my brother, and I love him.
My dad is the glue in the family. He works, and works, and works. But when he comes home, he is always ready to hear about our day. And through Covid, he worked more but always came home ready to see his wife and children. He told us stories of what he had done during the day and always wanted to know what had happened in our lives throughout the day. Even though he was tired, he was always ready to hear the adventures that occurred, while all of us were at home. He was the reason I stayed sane all those months.
Through the entire period of Covid, my family was by my side through it all. My mother worked hard to make sure that I had everything I needed during Covid. My brother was my release from all the stress of school and drama with Zoom friends. My dad helped me stay grounded in a time that life was a mess. They help me through one of the times that I will never forget. There aren’t enough words to express how much they mean to me. Thank you for being my heroes.
this was just an essay i wrote for an actual contest :)

Once upon a time there lived a stern, proud queen, whose life was made bearable by her lovely daughter Tatiana and her kittens. The queen adored kittens. Every day she would get up at the crack of dawn and spend the morning petting all the tabbies. At noon, she would bathe every Calico she could find. Lastly, at dinner, the queen would feed Persians, Angoras, and Ragdolls until it was time for bed. Every day of every week was like this, until something peculiar happened.
One morning, Queen Sonya sat petting the tabbies, when a wrinkly, old lady walked up to her. "Your majesty, could you possibly give an old woman like me one of your many kittens? I need a companion in my lonely life and a kitten would do just fine."
The queen stood and frowned. "My kittens are like children to me; you do not give your children to strangers."
The old woman pleaded. "I'm lonely, and my life is empty. Surely you can spare one."
Queen Sonya stamped her foot and shouted. "Do you not understand me? You nor anyone else in this kingdom, shall ever receive a kitten from me!"
The old woman glared and said, "So be it. But until you learn to share what you have, everything you touch shall turn into a kitten." Then she turned and stalked away angrily.
The queen scooped up her mewling balls of fur and carried them into the castle. Inside she set them down and was about to brush them when 'poof' the hairbrush turned into a fluffy Angora kitten! Queen Sonya was delighted.
"You are just the sweetest little thing," she told it. She picked it up and took it to her room, but when the queen tried to open her door 'poof', the door became a Siamese! The queen experimentally tapped a shoe. 'Poof,' another kitten was born. For the rest of the afternoon, the queen touched, tapped, and danced her fingers across every object she could find. The castle was soon half full with kittens!
That evening during dinner, the queen discovered one side effect to her predicament. After all the excitement from the day, she was hungry and demanded an early dinner. The Queen did not even wait for Tatiana to join her. But every time she tried to use a fork or spoon, it transformed into a gold colored kitten. She tried picking up the food with her hands, but 'poof,' kitten! Eventually the queen gave up and decided to skip dinner, causing her pleasant mood to sour. Just then her daughter Tatiana walked into the dining room.
"Mother, I'm tired of all these kittens! They do nothing but scratch the furniture and shed on the rugs! Couldn't you give away just a few of them?"
Queen Sonya was grumpy. She'd had no dinner and was sick of everything turning into kittens. She stood angrily and faced her daughter, "The day I give away a kitten will be the day I become one!" She raised her hand and struck Tatiana! The queen covered her mouth when she realized what she had done. Before Queen Sonya could do anything, her daughter changed into a hissing lump of fur. Kitten Tatiana was not happy with her situation. She hissed, meowed, and clawed everything in sight. The queen, on the other hand, could only sit and whisper, "What have I done? What have I done?"
After a few minutes, Queen Sonya stood up. She knew what she had to do. She selected the best and fluffiest kittens and took them to the village. There the once stern and proud queen, who would have turned her nose up at every village child, gave each and every one of them a kitten of his and her own. Not a single boy or girl was sent away empty handed. After all but one kitten had been given away, Queen Sonya felt different inside. A strange new feeling rose up inside her chest and bloomed. It felt wonderful and the queen didn't want it to end. It had soon frown dark and Queen Sonya began to walk home.
On the lonely path to the castle she met a familiar old woman. "What does the queen think of the feeling reserved for those who give?"
Queen Sonya smiled. "It feels better then hot chocolate on a cold winter night, or a spicy hot tea before bed. Lucky are those who feel this every day." The queen reached into the folds of her cloak and pulled out a soft black kitten. "May she be a comfort to you all the days of your life." When the tired queen had reached her castle, a surprise was waiting for her at the entrance. "Tatiana, my sweet girl!" Queen Sonya wrapped her arms around her daughter and hugged her tight. Many hundreds of years after that, Queen Sonya was always remembered as Queen Sonya the Generous.
