Ella Ferris (eferris) | 226 comments Put retellings of the Snow Queen here!

I haven't actually read any besides the original by Hans Christian Anderson (great tale by the way). There's also The Ice Maiden by him as well (also good). Anyone know of any retellings of the Ice Maiden?

I haven't read the originals and I don't know any of The Ice Maiden, but there's this retelling of The Snow Queen that I plan on reading Winter's Child: A Retelling of The Snow Queen. If anyone's read it, mind telling me if it's good?

There's also A Crown of Snow and Ice: A Retelling of The Snow Queen by Melanie Cellier. It's a really good book that I really enjoyed on my first read. I'm not sure if it's the type of book I'll reread since it relies on the element of surprise for its plot twist. The scenery was super pretty in the book though. :)

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) | 218 comments You know I can't help myself. Here I go:

Here are some which feature one book or one character that represents the Snow Queen:
The Snow Queen's Shadow by Jim C. Hines (book 4 in a hilarious fantasy series-this character's turn in the front seat.)
Fairest: Levana’s Story by Marissa Meyer (The main antagonist in this series is based on the Snow Queen!)

True retellings:
Wintergate by C.E. Murphy (Book 1 in series is Beauty & the Beast)
The Bright & the Pale (A YA retelling that leans heavily into some action)
Robbergirl by S.T. Gibson (a sapphic Snow Queen outing)
The Raven and the Reindeer by T. Kingfisher (I REALLY want to read this one!)

I can't wait to see what else I don't know about!!

Omg I feel so dumb for not realizing that Fairest is a retelling of The Snow Queen. It seems so obvious now haha.

I despise her too. But I read it anyways because I was curious about her point of view. Who would've known that her mind would be so twisted. I wonder if her sister would've done a better job of ruling than Levanna. She seems neglectful at best so it would've meant that the senior officers in her management would've taken charge. Hmm I suppose that would depend on whether or not the management was corrupted. Levanna's sister would've been easily manipulated by her trusted councilor's though since she's such a weak queen who only cared about partying which could've meant the councilors could've manipulated her into doing good for the people, but also that they could've manipulated her to do worst than Levanna. Huh. Food for thought.

But the fact that Levanna who's like thirty something is trying to marry Kai who's a teenager (like 16/17 so he's half her age and a minor) is so disturbing though. Like I know you need a king but girl that's a no no.

Susan Chapek | 56 comments I had no idea there were so many Snow Queen retellings. I'll have to take a look at some of them--it's always been a favorite of mine. I actually wrote a stage version for young performers, which is going to be published in a play anthology in 2022. I'll post here when it's available, in case anybody is interested in that kind of thing.

And I don't remember an Ice Maiden at all! (Off to look for it on the internet now.)

The Ice Maiden is a lot lesser known than the Snow Queen, unfortunately. Still fantastic though!

I just search it up and geez that was a depressing story. It's interesting how Han Chrisitan's childhood impacted the story though.

That's amazing! If you would share it, I'm interested! I'm in awe of those who can write...anything.
