Betsy | 930 comments Welcome readers to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, which is the January 2022 Classics BOTM.

This is the pre-read discussion thread, so please keep your lips pursed about key details.

Who is joining us this month? What do you know of this novel?

message 2: by Nóri (new)

Nóri | 38 comments I'm planning to join this read!

I read this book some twenty years ago (oh boy), and saw the movie trilogy, but somehow never got around to reading the whole series, which I'd like to do now.

message 3: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 44 comments Same! It has been many many years. I am trying to decide if I want to read it on my own, or out loud to my kiddo.

message 4: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I read the series to my age 10 (?) child and we enjoyed it. He still has (and plans to reread) the set, though he's graduated from university now.

Book_Fairy (book_confessions_of_a_fangirl) | 5 comments I want to read this again, i havent read it in forever and can't wait to join in.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Btw, I just learned that during his 20s, Lewis was an atheist. J.R.R. Tolkien converted him (back) to Christianity.

edit: there's a specific reason that this is a relevant comment... but I suppose I ought not say more until the spoiler thread....

Nell | 438 comments Everyone has read this but me! I've never watched the movies either.

I am starting the series this month with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe so I can see what all the buzz is about.

I am an aspiring Christian missionary and have decided to do more "buddy reads in the center of God's will" (that is, buddy reads of books on my HUGE seminary required reading list). Yes, I knew that as this fact was mentioned in class. God is amazing! Looking forward to this discussion.

Stephanie (ssperanz) | 3 comments Excited to finally join in on one of the monthly reads!! I read the Magician’s Nephew ages ago when I was in elementary school, and I was the right age when the movies came out to obsess over them but I never got around to reading the series. Better late than never though!

message 10: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 15 comments I read this when I was a kid and have been meaning to reread this for ages. I even snagged my set of books from my mom's a few years back

message 11: by Ben (new)

Ben Coils | 5 comments Spent some time in book shop looking for this book. Finally asked a member of staff if they had it and was inform it was with the children’s fiction. I must have looked a right fool.

message 12: by Mandy (new)

Mandy | 11 comments I saw the movie years ago as a kid but never got around to reading the books. I thought now would be a great time to change that and it would be a nice winter read. I've been slowly making my way through the 4 hour audiobook. I enjoy how whimsical the story is!

Well, I guess they have to put it somewhere. But it's for all ages, imo!

message 14: by Ben (new)

Ben Coils | 5 comments Cheryl I certainly don’t feel like a child reading it . Really enjoying it. Must be an extra childish copy I got as comes complete with illustrations.

message 15: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Yes, the illustrations by Pauline Baynes are fun, aren't they?

message 16: by Ben (new)

Ben Coils | 5 comments They definitely are fun. They go rather nicely with the story.

message 17: by Jen (new)

Jen | 3 comments I’m reading it via audiobook, which is fun! So far, it’s whimsical and reminds me of my childhood. We had read it (or had it read to us) when we were little, so it’s going to be fun to look at it again.

message 18: by Yolanda (new)

Yolanda Rico | 81 comments This is one of my all time favorite books. First read it a 9, I reread the series every so often. I have read this book countless times. I am excited to reread and discuss with all of you 😁

message 19: by Ben (new)

Ben Coils | 5 comments I finished it this morning. And really enjoyed the experience. It is a book I wouldn’t have picked up in a million years so a great big thanks to the group for putting it on the reading list for this month. Onto The Queen’s Gambit now. Thanks again.

message 20: by Robert (new)

Robert Sweeney (robertsweeney) | 2 comments I read this as a kid about 35 years ago, and I'm looking forward to re-reading it now. I'm also looking forward to discussing it with all of you. :-)

message 21: by Shelley (new)

Shelley I read this entire series a few years ago. The Horse and His Boy was my favorite of the stories that had not been made into movies. Sadly, I don't remember much from the last couple of books. It may be time for a reread, but I doubt I'll find time this month.

I hope readers enjoy this one. It's a great story.

message 22: by Susan (new)

Susan | 442 comments Excited to see this as a group read selection, I read it and Prince Caspian a looooong time ago and hope to notice a lot more things this time. May get around to the whole series in the next year or two....

Kylie Stoneburner (lunchbox89) | 197 comments I first read this as a class in the 3rd grade, which was about 26 years ago! I just started reading it aloud to my baby girl.
