After the explosive breakout on the Isle of Lidelse, Selena and Varick have made it to safety. But the Helsings are already plotting their revenge and will hunt them to the ends of the earth to have it. Selena must rely on new allies as well as old to remain safe, but trust is not a thing she finds easy anymore.
Soon, she's forced to decide whether to fight or keep running. But can she stay out of this war, even when whispers of a new game reach her ear? Can she continue to let the Hunters brutally kill girls for the sake of entertainment? Or is it time for her to rise up and put a stop to the games once and for all?

Finished (view spoiler)[If I’m being honest I wasn’t a smidge surprised about what happened to Varick and how he was “saved.” I’m pissed this leader of the games escaped but at least (and hopefully because I’m not 100% sure) Mercy’s parents are gone. How screwed up her dad was left gonna kill her smh. Mostly I’m happy Selena got reunited with her mom and even dad. Like I was gonna be pissed if we didn’t get that reunion. And d@mn the feels I have for her moms for as much as she knew her only daughter went to jail for defending herself against Her boyfriend and then got killed in prison. A decent amount has passed by now too 😢 The book was good, honestly still shocked by the brutality, but if I’m being honest what I’m really pissed about is Jameson having to kill his pack. 😭🥵😭🤬😡😰😭🤬😡 While I did enjoy this, I dunno if I wanna continue on with the offshoot series. (view spoiler)[As you know, I am not the greatest fan of Ulvic. The way he treats the wolves - like they are things he owns - annoys the hell out of me.

On the bright side, I have really appreciated how Selena (and the author) dealt with the revelation about Varick knowing she could be the cure. She doubted his motives but she faced him asap, avoiding us that irritating (and generally unnecessary) misunderstanding-related angst. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Yeah, I know what you mean. I am glad that they are not competing in the games, but are just spectators this time. Otherwise, it would have likely felt a bit forced (as in the last book of the Hunger Games series).
The new Games bode to be even crueler than the ones held by the Helsings. (hide spoiler)]

For a few, agonizing minutes I thought Varick was dead for sure. I mean, it was maybe too much, but having read other books by this author and knowing how much she can be vicious and cruel with us poor readers, I was really scared.

I enjoyed this book and felt really sorry for Kite and glad that Selena and Varick could finally have their happy ending. However, I was not so invested as in the previous instalments and it took me forever to finish this one. TBH, I can't put a finger on what exactly it was missing, but it didn't blow me away. Hence, at least for the moment, I won't proceed with reading the spin-off series. (hide spoiler)]

I enjoyed reading them with you as well. This one really was a lot to take though. (view spoiler)[Not to spoil anything but I peeped at a few reviews for further books in the series thinking I’d eventually like to read Jameson’s and her story but yeah it’s a no for me. Life doesn’t get any easier for him and Ulric is still around 🥵🥵😡 (hide spoiler)]
