Hello and welcome to Team Howl's Moving Castle!

Have you read the book and/or seen the movie? I personally prefer the movie to the book, it is so well drawn and has a lovely soundtrack, too. :-)

Once you have found your way to this thread, please introduce yourselves with your name and a link to your Uno shelf and anything else you'd like to tell us. No need to go into detail if you do not wish to!

Please read the rules carefully if you haven't played before. It looks more daunting than it is, I promise! Uno is really easy once you get started. If after reading the rules you still have questions, feel free to ask! I'm here to help. The veterans of the challenge will also be able to answer questions should I not be around (I do have to sleep some time after all hehe).

On our team spreadsheet, you can already see our cards for the month of February. Have a look, browse through your books, and see what kind of cover colours you can come up with that fit the cards ;-)

If you read a fabulous book recently, do let the team know! Maybe someone might like to pick that one up to read as a reverse?

Most importantly though - and then I'm going to stop rambling, I promise - HAVE FUN! Uno is a fun and social challenge with (usually) lots of chatter in the team threads.

Happy reading!

Eni | 169 comments Hi everyone! *waves*

I'm happy to come back to UNO!

I'm from Portugal, 37, single mom. Live with my little one and my sister Sonia who is a pain in my behind all day everyday :p

I never saw or read the movie/book. I need to go search it.

My Uno shelf is uno-2022.

Happy to be here with you all :)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Hi! For those I haven't met, I'm Stacie. I live in Maryland with my husband and our two cats. My shelf is uno_2022

I have never read the book or seen the movie but I should really fix that one of these days.

Snowtulip | 834 comments Hi Everyone!!!

So excited for UNO, although I think I'm still low on some of the colors from the last time around ;)

I have seen the movie, love it, but haven't read the book.

I checked to see if there was a spotify list for this book (you know how I love music Eldarwen :)), https://open.spotify.com/playlist/297...

So I may give it a listen tonight, get me in the mood, and maybe eventually give me the push to read the book.

Tina | 768 comments Hello everyone!

I'm Tina and I have played Uno every year since 2015. So nice to see some familiar faces:) And also to meet some new ones!

I'm from Sweden and I love to read. Lately life has been crazy so I don't read as much as I used to do, but this challenge always helps me get some reading done:)
I have never heard of Howl's Moving Castle, but I'll try to fix that eventually.

So cool to have you back on the team, Tina - after all this was THE challenge many many moons ago where we met and fell into the challenge hole hehe.

Oh yay! :-D
But I'm not surprised there is a list hehe. Studio Ghibli movies have wonderful music and have a big following :-)

Alya | 111 comments Hi!

So excited the teams are finally here :) I have been checking the group every day to see if there is new information and it is finally here, yay!

I am from Lithuania (maybe someone knows where that is) and compared to last year, I will probably not read as much (adult life has finally caught up to me), but I will definitely be more motivated!

I hope we are going to be a chatty group and discuss everything :)

I am not sure how to link a bookshelf, but I have created it

LaurLa | 1005 comments Hi all! LaurLa here :-)
I'm an Uno veteran but I've lost count how many times I've played... 4,5,6... I don't know. Obviously it's one of my faves!

I live in the US, in Indiana so pretty much middle America. My hometown's biggest claim to fame in the Indianapolis 500 Race.

I am married with 2 grown boys, 25 and 21. Both are out of the house so it's quiet it around here now. We have 2 dogs. One, Kauri, we've have since she was a puppy and is almost 14 and the other, Rocco, we adopted recently after my mother's passing away. He's around 10 and a very entitled little guy but we are all adjusting to the new family member!

Here is my shelf

Hello and welcome to the team! Which should indeed be a chatty one hehe.

I grabbed your shelf, no worries.

If you're on the app, then I have no idea how to help you with the linking - nor how to link bookcovers for completion posts later.
In the browser, it would be the link in your browser at the top once you've clicked on your uno shelf :-) But I assume that's obvious hehe.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Alya wrote: "This is probably too soon to ask buuut what kind of tactic do you use for UNO? Just read whatever and then try to apply it for the cards?"

Basically yes.

The best tactic however is to get the more difficult cards out of the way first, or at least sort of planned between the team, and those are the colour cards.

It's always good to have some V books handy since #7 in series isn't always the easiest one to have on hand.

I'll post a summary of our cards once we're all here. But if you're curious, you can already have a look at the team spreadsheet to see which hands we were dealt for February. :-)

message 31: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 53 comments Hello everyone! So excited to be here!

I'm Emelie from Sweden. I have had years of not reading as much as I used to die to burn out some years ago but I finally am starting to read more and more and enjoy it so i felt ready to start being in challenges again! It's my first with uno bit I've done a few of the other big challenge tower teams a few times so I know a bit in general how to play these kinda things.

I have both seen and read Howls moving castle and loved both! I used to be obsessed with the Japanese voice for Howl as it was so soothing and pleasant to listen to.

My shelf link is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Well met and looking forward to spending this game with you all!

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Vetoing both green options as not green enough, sorry!

Also vetoing your secondary 8 Yellow options, Stacie, but they look orange rather than yellow. And vetoing your second red option. Psalm looks sort of brownish for the background image.

Lots of other options though, nice!

message 46: by Emelie (last edited Jan 18, 2022 12:17PM) (new)

Emelie | 53 comments One of my first picks would be my 6 green.

Question - I've put down that I can read 1 book/month. It's my understanding that we have to hand one and finish it before we can move to hand two, etc. If I get the 6 green, for example, that's in hand four, can I begin to read for it even though hands 1-3 aren't finished?

Edit: I see now that that book might not meet the criteria. The rules say it has to be more than 100 pages, and that book has 100 pages.

All hands can be read for at the same time. Eldarwen will look at all the books we report as finish and put them where they best fit, maybe move them around if needed but there is no requirement to finish one hand before moving on to the next one. You just can't get points for hand two and so on, if you have finished hand one yet.

Ahh, ok, then I understand! :)

message 49: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) I can definitely read Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins since it works for both 8 and 9 Yellow. You can also put me down for one or both of the blues, especially since we need multiples for the draw fours.
