This multi-layered mystery was intense, somewhat unsettling at times, and has many threads woven into the plot.

PattyMacDotComma I'll be surprised if this one doesn't win some more awards. Auē, by Becky Manawatu is centred around a contemporary Maori family. Loved it!

Overall, this romantic suspense novel was enjoyable. While there is plenty of danger and suspense, nothing distinguished it from other novels.

PattyMacDotComma I'm ashamed I know so little about Alexander von Humboldt, who explained how important it is to know that everything is connected in nature. Thanks to Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, I know more. Get this into the hands of kids!

PattyMacDotComma What's not to like in a Mick Herron novella? You don't know have to know Herron's work to enjoy poor old 'retired' spook John Bachelor's dilemma in The Catch.

Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 397 comments Secondhand Time The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich, who had received the Nobel Prize in Literature shortly after this book's publication.

This nonfiction is a compilation of oral histories documenting momentous periods in the 20th century history of the USSR and of the aftermath of its dissolution in 1991. Plenty of criminal acts but without the justice delivered in crime fiction.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This is a British crime drama / police procedural. The narrative is suspenseful with a creative, absorbing, complex, and well-paced plot with some twists that will keep a reader guessing. This is the fifth book in the series, and it is best read in order.

PattyMacDotComma My Name Is Yip by Paddy Crewe is the off-beat 'memoir' of a most unusual character. Yip is like no one I've ever met (or am likely to meet), and I loved the way he told his story of early nineteenth century America.

PattyMacDotComma Jess Kidd has taken the difficult history of the 17th century Dutch ship 'Batavia' and tied it to a contemporary Australian story through two wonderful nine-year-old children. The Night Ship is well-researched and beautifully written, with a little bit of magical realism readers should love.

Kristie | 5928 comments I just finished Steelheart Steelheart (The Reckoners, #1) by Brandon Sanderson . I thought it was pretty good, except for all the exclamations of "Stars!" and "Calamity!" They got very tiresome. I listened while traveling with my grandson and he's looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.

I'm now reading The Vanishing Half The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett . I'm about halfway and think it's really good. I was surprised by how many perspectives it was told from.

PamG (lynguy1) | 1027 comments Here is my 4 star review of Kit McBride Gets a Wife Kit McBride Gets a Wife by Amy Barry by Amy Barry.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This is a historical romance that combines romance and humor in a historical western setting. While the plot is straightforward, the book is full of laugh-out-loud humor as well as some more somber moments. The world-building was great, and the author captured the cultural lifestyles and portrayed them well.

PamG (lynguy1) | 1027 comments My 4.45 --> rounded to 4 stars review of A Cornish Recipe for Murder A Cornish Recipe for Murder (The Nosey Parker Mysteries #5) by Fiona Leitch by Fiona Leitch:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Fiona Leitch brings a death, a baking show, and some humor to the fifth book in the Nosey Parker cozy mystery series set mainly on the grounds of Boskern House in Cornwall, England. A well-plotted story with characters that feel emotionally rich draws readers in and doesn’t let go until the final word in the book. Overall, this was a story that quickly drew me into Jodie’s world. It was a fun, appealing and entertaining read with a solid mystery to unravel.
