Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments The ease of self-publishing has certainly increased the number (if not necessarily the quality) of indie authors. The same applies to independent publishers - there a few that have pretty extensive catalogues.

Robin Tompkins | 1002 comments I will grant you that Kindle Create is a lot more user friendly than older apps and that the world has changed a hell of a lot since the days of vanity publishing though. ☺ Still, quite a lot of work goes into a self published book... I do take your point though and I am (mostly) just messing with you ☺☺

message 14: by Georgann (new)

Georgann | 302 comments I finished my first book, and added the cover to the bottom of my post. That is how we are doing it in another group I'm in. Is that how we do it here?

message 15: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments So you're free to track as you see fit. I use the thread here for planning and tracking, but also I use the challenge tool itself.

For the challenge tool I see you already put yourself down for the full 25 books. When you configure the challenge, provide it a shelf name to which you'll add your bingo books, it will automatically track the completed ones. For example I have a shelf called sff-2022-bingo-challenge but you can use any name. Only put books on it that will count towards your challenge.

Then if you want you can also add a comment to your challenge when you finish a book just to say which slot you filled, but that really duplicates what we post here so it's not really needed but I usually do both. And you can post here any way you like, so I usually do (plain_text_title) for books I'm planning to read, and when I finish it I turn it to a GR link, but you'll see different options in other people's posts, the way you're doing your post is perfectly fine :)

Finally, the use of the challenge tool or even this thread is totally optional too. They allow other people to see your progress, and maybe get ideas to fill their own slots, but you can totally track on a piece of paper to keep it secret. But I like seeing my little progress bar on the challenge tool, and it reminds me if I'm falling behind.

The only real rule is 1 book per slot, which if you use the challenge tool will be enforced, you won't be able to trick it into counting one book for more than one slot, even if it applies :)

message 16: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela (pal3) | 18 comments I filled one square by pure luck. I joined a SFF book club and the first read is Who Goes There?, telepathy is mentioned, so I am counting it for N4: Featuring telepathy or psychic abilities.
Lucky me, I had no idea of what book I could read for that one.

Andrea | 3541 comments Goodreads wants to help out people still needing to fill their cop/detective slot - https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/2...

There are sections for "In Space" and "Through Time". These are all newer releases, I already went with Asimov's Caves of Steel.

YAY! WTG!
I did, too, and didn't even realize it until you mentioned it. Mine is all the 1 row. I was stuck on simply filling out the whole card. My last book was When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill When Women Were Dragons What an intensely fabulous book and it IS a beautiful cover!

Andrea | 3541 comments Up to 17 books now and got my second BINGO, filled out the second row now.

message 25: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments Late in the year, but I have now filled in the O column. 14 books left to fill out the entire card - it will be tight.

message 26: by Georgann (last edited Sep 05, 2022 06:04PM) (new)

Georgann | 302 comments Just added my 2022 book, Soul Taken (Mercy Thompson, #13) by Patricia Briggs Soul Taken. I've been waiting for months for this latest in the Mercy Thompson series. It is one of my favorite series, and was worth the wait! I only have 2 slots left to fill.

message 27: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments I still haven't figured out my 2022 book :) Though I did good job up till now, I've been pushing to the next month the books I need to fill slots, so that's going to get me at the end of year, not so far away!

message 28: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments I'm in the same boat - I didn't pay enough attention to Bingo books early in the year and now, with just under 4 months to go, I still have 11 slots to fill - some of which I still haven't chosen books for.

message 29: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments I started off good, I was able to put a Dune book in many of the slots, but then I stopped being able to do that but still had like 10 Dune books to go (similar for Ender's Game series, and Asimov's Robots) so I stopped making progress in the BINGO since I was trying to finish those series too.

I believe there is yet another Dune book slated to be published in November so that might become my 2022 book, as well as the second Dune graphic novel (the first was good actually). Will see who gets the coveted spot!

message 30: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments I have finished the I column in my Bingo card. 10 books remain to finish the card.

message 31: by Georgann (new)

Georgann | 302 comments Finished my last book and my BINGO card is full. Thanks to whoever put this together. It was a fun goal, and I read outside my usual.

message 32: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments I have finished the B column

message 33: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments Had to change some of my predictions from the start of the year as there's no way I'll get to them.

I filled in the Anthology slot, and I've got 3 targeted for October, which will leave me with 3 more after that...my 2022 one might only get published in November if I go with that plan, by the time I get it and read it, it will really squeak in right at the end :)

message 34: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments Three columns completed - B, I & O (but no rows yet) and I have selections for most of the remaining 7 slots.

message 35: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments Added two more books, got one row BINGO and one column one. 5 more books to go.

Best of luck! that's a lot of reading for the next few months. I had a lot of fun with it, and read some books I would not've otherwise.

message 38: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments I have completed my first row - the 1 row. That makes 3 columns and 1 row. 4 books left to complete the card.

message 39: by Georgann (new)

Georgann | 302 comments WTG, Tony! You've caught up quickly!

message 40: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments I've been stuck at 4 for a while now! I know I will get one done next week, one next month, I probably need to hunt for a replacement for the Indie one since that opens up a whole series and I won't have time for that, and one I'm waiting for it to be published first...

message 41: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments I have completed another row, I have now finished 3 columns (B, I, O) and 2 rows (1, 3). 3 books to go.

message 42: by NekroRider (new)

NekroRider | 495 comments Updated my entry a little. Some I'm putting in multiple spots right now and then will decide their official spot later.

Also, for the books that were free space, does reading books one's significant other bought for herself, count? Or do they need to have been gifts/borrowed from outside your own household lol?

Georgann wrote: Best of luck! that's a lot of reading for the next few months. I had a lot of fun with it, and read some books I would not've otherwise.

Thanks! I definitely don't expect to complete the card haha but it's all in good fun!

message 43: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments I think a significant other purchase counts enough :)

message 44: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments Got both a column and a row with the Invisible Man in my pre-20th century slot. That leaves 4 more to go.

message 45: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments Finished another row, so that's 3 columns (B, I, and O) and 3 rows (1, 3, 5). Only 2 slots left - set in the distant future, and written pre-20th century.

message 46: by Andrea (last edited Nov 25, 2022 08:14AM) (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments Added two more to the list, finally got around to my Fairy Tale/Folklore slot with Cinder, and decided to just stick the Dune vol 2 graphic novel as my published in 2022. Though there was an actual Dune novel published a few days ago it cost nearly $40...don't want it that badly :) I'll wait till something like BookOutlet has a discounted copy but that might only be next year.

Added one more, for the indie author went with something that is categorized as steampunk but it's definitely on the fantasy end of things rather than the SF end, but there's no way I'll have time to read the one I originally planned.

So just one more to go!

message 47: by Tony (new)

Tony Calder (tcsydney) | 1067 comments The completion of The Time Machine by HG Wells fills the final slot in my Bingo for this year.

message 48: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3541 comments BINGO!

Actually finished Scarlet a couple days ago but forgot to update here.

One week left for those still working on their cards :)
