Very highly regarded mystery written in and taking place in 1949 in and around Santa Barbara, California, which Macdonald calls Santa Teresa. Private detective Lew Archer is hired to find a wealthy man who has disappeared and may have been kidnapped. I read a great many of Macdonald's books decades ago and I thought I'd take another look. To my surprise I found the dialogue stilted and unrealistic. Consequently I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. 3 stars.

Basis for a good 1960s movie, Harper with Paul Newman. I don't mind Macdonald's dialog, though dialog is not his strength as it was for Raymond Chandler. Chandler's dialog probably isn't realistic either, but it's often great fun.

The true story of justice subverted when Russ Faria was accused of killing his wife Betsy Faria. Now a mini-series on Hulu.
The case is covered very thoroughly. 4 stars

Great for those that like their books dark and twisty. My four star review:

I just sent my last manuscript to the editor and ordered new books to read.
End of Days by Brad Taylor
Starless Crown by James Rollins

Suspenseful historical fiction my five star review:

Stephanie Plum #12.5, OK to read as a standalone. Stephanie becomes a match-maker for Valentines Day. No murders, no criminals, no man-hunting. Very substandard entry in the series. Not recommended.

Here is my three star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This is the first book in the Caribbean Kitchen mystery series, featuring a Hispanic sleuth and her circle of friends and relatives.
Good multiethnic cozy mystery with recipes. 3.5 stars

Just about to start Notes on an Execution. I'm doing very little if anything else today other than read. Ahhhh

Just started C. J. Box's first Joe Pickett book Open Season. Enjoying it thus far.

Dr. Siri #13, OK to read as a standalone. Dr. Sir tries to find the history of a skeleton found at a public monument. I'm a big fan of the Dr. Siri series and I've been reading them in order. This is by far the weakest entry. Almost no mystery -- a great deal of the book is made up of Cotterill's nauseating descriptions about the trade in animals and animal parts. Just because he's right doesn't mean I want to read this disgusting stuff -- page after page. Not recommended.

The further sardonic adventures of 88-year-old Maud, who doesn't shrink at a spot of murder.
Fun sequel to the first book. 3.5 stars
