I like it a lot although I've only read about 25%. Her prose has such a unique flavor - beautiful of its own accord but then you add in the long tangled run-on sentences, some of which go one for two pages, and the sharply drawn characters and vivid setting.... It's like if Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez directed a Virginia Woolf novel.

I read a biography of a courageous US Marine Valor: The Astonishing World War II Saga of One Man's Defiance and Indomitable Spirit by Dan Hampton
I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading stories of courage in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Silesian Station is an entertaining-but-flawed follow-up to a well-crafted and engaging series debut. Its overstuffed plot suffers from not having a clear throughline, though the individual strands can be effective in isolation. I'm disappointed; I wanted to like this more than I did. The normal-guy protagonist is still easy to relate to and makes the story still worth the effort. But I hope that book #3 will be a better read so the series can live up to its potential. Three transfers on the Strassenbahn.

The Second Sight of Zachary Cloudesley is an entertaining debut by Sean Lusk which has some history, some mystery, some magic, and exotic locales (think sultan and harem!) so I can see a real fan base for this when it comes out in June.

I enjoyed Viet Thanh Nguyen's 2016 Pulitzer Prize winner, The Sympathizer, but the political and philosophical arguments got the better of me in his follow-up, The Committed. He's an excellent, smart writer - and funny (a Chinese guy called Le Cao Boi wishes he were American).

I like Yokomizo's novels. Very much looking forward to the newest one, Death on Gokumon Island. I also bought a copy of the film made from this book to watch after reading.

The Sympathizer was so good that I just don't think the sequel could measure up.

Where Serpents Sleep is number 4 in the engaging Sebastian St. Cyr historical mystery series. London 1812. Lord Devlin is teamed up with the daughter of Lord Jarvis, his nemesis. Full of action, history and humour.

Apeirogon, by award-winning Irish writer Colum McCann, is the remarkable and moving true story of two fathers, former enemies, working for peace. One is Israeli, one Palestinian. Both lost young daughters in the conflict. It is unbelievably beautifully done.
