This one didn't win any major awards, but Stephen King said it was one of the best mystery novels of the decade. We will see if that assessment holds up.

In this alternative history novel, commie-buster, anti-Semitic Joseph McCarthy is U.S. President and there's a nefarious plot afoot that involves a Jewish LAPD detective.

Interesting noir novel. 3 stars

Araych | 677 comments The Old Silent The Old Silent (Richard Jury, #10) by Martha Grimes by Martha Grimes

Richard Jury #10, OK to read as a standalone. I'm reading the series in order and this one is very different from most. Much less humor than usual, meaning less of Plant's goofy pub friends. Serious portrait of a tired overworked but brilliant detective following up a complex case that he's emotionally involved in. Highly recommended.

Two books:
Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree (a mammoth tome if ever there was one) and

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie. I've now seen three different versions of adaptations, and I can't help but think how well Christie set up the story. Definitely deserves a reread.

If you need more than my enthusiasm, Lee Child called Michael Trant's latest novel, Wild Dogs "Tough, fast and hard – my kind of book." It is also a completely authentic, Aussie outback story. I'm with Lee on this one.

I wasn't feeling so good yesterday, so (my many thanks to Karen who posted this title here) I received my copy of Bone Deep: Untangling the Twisted True Story of the Tragic Betsy Faria Murder Case and spent the day reading it. Where the series introduced more than a bit of levity into the story, this book is more geared toward the facts in the case, the trials, and eventually Pam Hupp's undoing.

Yes, creepy is the word. That comes across very well in the book, which to the authors' credit, isn't overly sensationalized.

Glad to hear that because I like this one a lot so far. It is gritty, but I don't mind that. There's a philosophical undertone that reminds me a little bit of Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer series.

King has been known to stray into hyperbole when it comes to plugging other authors, but I did really enjoy this book.

Second that. And if you liked The Long Home, his follow up Provinces of Night takes it to a whole new level.

In the next month or so, I'm planning to read his short story collection I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down: Collected Stories.

A lot of authors do this. I had a friend who was an author and she'd have me read the books that were sent to her to review so she could write a one or two sentence blurb from the notes I made about the book
