Yesterday was a lazy day here and fever is down so I was eager to catch up on reading. Then I realized that Tuesday is my IRL book group meeting and I hadn't read the book. Aaaarggh!! So I spent much of my day reading Jessica Bruder's Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. Then I spent much time being depressed and feeling guilty.

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments I finished another excellent crime novel by Michael Allegretto (Dead of Winter) and am now halfway through "Be Still, My Love" by June Truesdell.
Even though it was published in 1947, the writing style is not old-fashioned at all and I enjoy reading it very much.
It was filmed in the late 1940's with Loretta Young, "The Accused". One of my favorite film noir movies.

Patty | 4466 comments I recently read the little book The Master Key
by Masako Togawa written in 1962. It’s about the aging residents of a hotel for women. At the beginning, there is a crime. Each chapter after that is told by the POV of different women who live there.

Araych | 677 comments Nighttown Nighttown (Junior Bender, #7) by Timothy Hallinan by Timothy Hallinan

Junior Bender #7. Junior accepts a job against his instincts and it turns our the job morphs into something even worse than he imagined. Absolutely fascinating mystery/thriller. The plot races down the nighttime streets of L.A. and carries Junior, Ronnie, Stinky and us through nightmarish situations and on to a bittersweet ending. 5 stars, highest recommendation.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting THE KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES by Jussi Adler-Olsen. This is the first book in his ongoing series featuring detective Carl Morck and the team from Department Q, which handles cold cases across the whole of Denmark and those requiring special scrutiny.

I hope this first book is as good as advertised. I could use a new mystery series to add to my TBR stack :-)

Oh, you fast readers! I'm still working on Tomb of Sand, and I'm right about the halfway point. I'm not generally a fan of novels this big, but this one is well worth my time. I'm also on a Christie kick -- thinking about rereading And Then There Were None after I finish Why Didn't They Ask Evans?

message 783: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 583 comments I finished "The Christmas Thief" by Mary Higgins Clark this mornig and now continue with "Santa Cruise". I'm no fan of cruise ships, but I just know that MHC can turn every topic into something interesting.

I also have some 20+ Agatha Christie novels (German hardcovers) waiting for me, but this year I planned to re-read all MHC crime novels, maybe if I manage to finish MHC in time, I still will get to the Christie novels.

Reconsider, Christine. It ... well ... it didn't really stick to book, didn't really stick to the earlier movie, and didn't really add anything interesting or good, but did change up some stuff.

It has a great cast but still felt like a train wreck to me.

Araych | 677 comments Lord Edgeware Dies Lord Edgware Dies (Hercule Poirot, #9) by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie

Hercule Poirot #9, OK to read as a standalone. Hercule is charged by a beautiful actress to help secure a divorce from her husband. But soon the husband is murdered, and that is only the beginning of the murders. This is Christie at her best -- plot, dialogue, characters : all top drawer. I liked this one a lot -- 4 stars.

David Wolf | 6 comments The Keep, by Jennifer Egan. 5 stars!!!!! This strange and wonderful book has a mystery at its heart: who is telling the story, and how much of it is true? What you discover as you read it is another story entirely, and both have heart and darkness and tragedy and love. A truly remarkable novel from a highly accomplished author. Most highly recommended.
