Currently finishing up my 5th (?) reread of As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, and again awed by what he could do with the written word.

In between, when my mind isn't quite up to the challenge, I've been reading Kerry Greenwood's The Lady with the Gun Asks the Questions, a collection of Phryne Fisher short stories. Greenwood does a nice job of capturing the off-hand, jaunty style of the "Golden Age" mysteries of Christie, Sayers and Carr. Fluff, but fluff that makes me grin.

Yesterday I finished reading Night Over Fitch's Pond by Cora Jarrett (1933). Very different in that at the beginning, a death has already happened and the narrator is sitting with the body during the night, telling the story of how things came to be that way. At first I'm thinking what the heck, but once the character introductions were finished, she really got down to some serious business. It seems that the author went to great pains to call her book a psychological portrait of a marriage rather than a crime story, but it suited me just fine once it started taking off.

Also read Of Women and Salt for my IRL book group's May meeting, and while there was great potential in that book, it seems that I'm one of the few who really didn't care for it.

Today while I'm waiting for my dog at the vet, I'll be starting No Surrender: My Thirty-Year War by Hiroo Onoda.

Araych | 677 comments Old Flames Old Flames (Inspector Troy, #2) by John Lawton by John Lawton

Inspector Troy #2, probably best to read the series in order. It's 1956 in Britain, Khrushchev is coming to visit and there seem to be crooks and spies everywhere, some alive and some not. Complicated plot, confusing cast of characters and only partially decipherable British slang. But it's worth staying with it -- very fine mystery/spy story I enjoyed very much -- 4 stars.

It is, definitely. The beginning is a bit sloggy but once things started taking off, I couldn't stop reading.

Well into No Surrender: My Thirty-Year War and really liking it. This morning I was looking around for photos of this guy (the author, Hiroo Onoda), and lo and behold, there's a movie which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021. I don't know when it will be released here in the US but when that happens, I'm there.

I finished reading No Surrender: My Thirty-Year War yesterday afternoon, after which I discovered that I could buy the 2021 film based on this story in the UK so I did. Should be here Wednesday and I can't wait. Word to the wise: invest in a multi-region, Blu-Ray dvd player ... worth its weight in gold.

Ruth Galloway #2, you should probably read #1 first. In this one Ruth and Detective Nelson are drawn into 2 interwoven cold cases. I really like Griffiths' "Magic Men" series but I'm not sure I'll continue with this series. 3 stars for this book.

I'm still poking along in the 20s. We're home through my birthday though, so I should be able to get some reading done before we go away again in November.
