Becoming Eve My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman by Abby Stein Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman by Abby Stein

In this memoir, the transgender author Abby Stein writes about leaving her ultra-orthodox Chasidic community and transitioning from male to female.

Interesting and enlightening story. 3.5 stars

Very late last night I finished reading The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry. I hadn't planned on reading this one at this moment, but it is my IRL book group''s choice for this month and I'd totally forgotten until like Saturday or so.

If anyone in the US would like this book, I'm not keeping it so you can have it for free.

Also reading Ghosts, a collection of ghostly (and other) tales by Edith Wharton So good!

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments I love Garry Disher's rural Australia, but he doesn't pull any punches about life being less than idyllic in Day's End, #4 of his Paul Hirschhausen series. Demoted to a one-cop town, Hirsch has to deal with the same evildoers as his city counterparts - but on his own. Good solid read!
Day's End (Paul Hirschhausen #4) by Garry Disher 4.5★ My review of Day's End

Araych | 677 comments A Lily of the Field A Lily of the Field (Inspector Troy, #7) by John Lawton by John Lawton

Inspector Troy #7, probably best to read in order. Even though there are a couple of murders this book should more properly be termed historical fiction than mystery. It follows the life of several characters, including Troy, from 1934 to 1947. Lawton is a very talented professional author and the story is extremely compelling. I really liked it, 4 stars.

This is in my "to be read pile" and when I saw how thick it is, how many pages, well, I have other books to read first. I did read one other Cormoran Strike book so I like the character-a one legged PI who lost his leg in Afghanistan, but let's see if I decide to get to it or not. I usually skip past too much explanation of the scenery, so maybe it will read faster that way??

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments A few months ago I read FIVE DECEMBERS, which was written under the pen name of James Kestrel. The book was excellent, and it won the 2022 Edgar Award as the Best Mystery Novel of the Year.

I found out that Kestrel is the pen name used by thriller novelist Jonathan Moore, so I went out and tracked down a library copy of Moore's 2019 thriller BLOOD RELATIONS.

So far it is just as good as his Edgar winner. I just may have found a new thriller novelist to track down at my local bookstores. We will see how it turns out.

Another great adventure this I enjoyed very much, too. The catwalk with lots of fashion and very much action. Love the cat, dog and unique characters and how they help each other to sort out the mystery. I enjoyed very much. Very much recommend to read.

Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 286 comments I enjoyed Ben Macintyre's The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War tremendously so I was eager to read his other books.

A Spy Among Friends Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal by Ben Macintyre A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal felt differently as it wasn't a straight up biography. This was more of an ensemble story to show the impact of betrayal -- Philby's betrayal of country, friends, and wives.

I'm reading In the Mouth of the Wolf: A Murder, a Cover-Up, and the True Cost of Silencing the Press by Katherine Corcoran. The author examines the death of a prominent Mexican journalist in Veracruz, which opens up into an investigation into the not-so-free press in Mexico. Fascinating stuff.

Araych | 677 comments The Furies The Furies (Charlie Parker, #20) by John Connolly by John Connolly

Charlie Parker #20. This book consists of 2 short novels, the second just marginally more creepy than the first. Connolly writes thrillers, not actual mysteries, with a touch of the supernatural (or is it the occult?) in them. I liked both of these stories a lot -- 4 stars.
