Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 286 comments Soul Taken (Mercy Thompson, #13) by Patricia Briggs Soul Taken by Patricia Briggs

Hmm, it's #13 (urban fantasy with a missing person & murders) and it's showing. It was a tedious slog at the beginning and the ending (last 25%) redeemed the story so it's a 3☆, maybe 3.5 ☆, for me.

Araych | 677 comments The Cutting Room The Cutting Room by Louise Welsh by Louise Welsh

Not a mystery although there is a murder. It really seems to be a novel about the corrupting influence of pornography, with the added prize of several graphic scenes of gay sex. Actually starts out OK but goes downhill fairly quickly. Not recommended.

Liz | 1195 comments I listened to Murder in Chianti, Murder in Chianti by Camilla Trinchieri hoping for a series I loved as much as Bruno, Chief of Police. But it was not to be. This was just a three star book for me. My review:

Funny how perceptions differ. At the time I read it, about 12 years ago, I thought this was one of the best suspense novels I'd ever read. The empathy of the main character as he tries to solve the mystery drew me in and kept me reading.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting RAZORBLADE TEARS by S.A. Cosby, a stand alone mystery/thriller from 2021 that won the Anthony, Barry, Macavity, and ITW Awards as Best Novel. It was also shortlisted for the Edgar Award and the U.K. Gold and Steel Dagger Awards.

I read Cosby's previous novel, BLACKTOP WASTELAND, earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I certainly hope this follow-up novel keeps the good times rolling.

River of the Gods Genius, Courage and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile by Candice Millard River of the Gods: Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile

It was a good choice, well-written. I believe that readers with a strong interest in African exploration and its mid-19th century history would find this to be a more than satisfactory read. For me, it was a solid 3.5 ☆.
