Rook is a fictionalised account by Stephen G. Eoannou of ex-cons who teamed up to become an odd pair of "badfellows" and ended up on the FBI's most-wanted list.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter won the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. I recently read one of those stories, Flowering Judas, which is also the title story of a later collection.

It takes place in the early 1920s in revolutionary Mexico. I can see why it made an impression in 1965.

I finished reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. I didn't love it and I found myself starting to skim through the second half, which is never a good sign. So frustrating!

As soon as I finish The Orphanage (which will likely be today) I'm planning on taking a breather before diving into Nights of Plague and reading a crime novel from China Bad Kids by Zizin Chen (Pushkin).

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting THE NIGHT MARKET by Jonathan Moore, a near future thriller published back in 2018.

I read his mystery/thriller novel FIVE DECEMBERS earlier this year, which he published under the pen name James Kestrel. It won both the Edgar and Barry Awards as the Best Novel of 2022. It was an excellent read and it put Moore on my radar to look for his other earlier stuff.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments Richard Flanagan is a favourite author of mine, a Tasmanian, and I can see why The Sound of One Hand Clapping was on the award lists in 1998. It's the story of a migrant family who came to Tasmania in the 1950s. Australia wasn't war-torn Europe, but life for them was no picnic.

Just getting into Bad Kids by Zijin Chen. So far it's okay. I'm just excited that it's a Chinese-language novel translated -- far too few of those.

Not quite halfway through the novella, The Final Solution by Michael Chabon. First read this a little over 15 years ago, and so far it's still holding up as the best Sherlock Holmes pastiche I've ever read, though Holmes' name is never mentioned.

In 1944 an elderly man sees a boy walking along the railroad tracks outside his home. On the boy's shoulder is a parrot, and the parrot speaks in German, singing or reciting numbers, unlike the boy who is mute. Later, when a man is murdered trying to steal the parrot, the local police ask the old man's help and the mystery proves so tempting, he turns away from his beehives for a time.
