Sarah | 1467 comments Ruby by Cynthia Bond - Ephram Jennings has never forgotten the beautiful girl with the long braids running through the piney woods of Liberty, their small East Texas town. Young Ruby, “the kind of pretty it hurt to look at,” has suffered beyond imagining, so as soon as she can, she flees suffocating Liberty for the bright pull of 1950s New York. Ruby quickly winds her way into the ripe center of the city--the darkened piano bars and hidden alleyways of the Village--all the while hoping for a glimpse of the red hair and green eyes of her mother. When a telegram from her cousin forces her to return home, thirty-year-old Ruby Bell finds herself reliving the devastating violence of her girlhood. With the terrifying realization that she might not be strong enough to fight her way back out again, Ruby struggles to survive her memories of the town’s dark past. Meanwhile, Ephram must choose between loyalty to the sister who raised him and the chance for a life with the woman he has loved since he was a boy.

Full of life, exquisitely written, and suffused with the pastoral beauty of the rural South, Ruby is a transcendent novel of passion and courage. This wondrous page-turner rushes through the red dust and gossip of Main Street, to the pit fire where men swill bootleg outside Bloom’s Juke, to Celia Jennings’s kitchen where a cake is being made, yolk by yolk, that Ephram will use to try to begin again with Ruby. Utterly transfixing, with unforgettable characters, riveting suspense, and breathtaking, luminous prose, Ruby offers an unflinching portrait of man’s dark acts and the promise of the redemptive power of love.

Sarah | 1467 comments I just finished The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins . It was pretty good. Ruby by Cynthia Bond is Oprah's book club pick since a year ago. I guess she took some time off. I also want to read The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro . I also read Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng and thought it was just o.k..

Virginie (chouettblog) | 350 comments I would like to nominate My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga by Jasmine Warga. It's only just recently come out but had quite good reviews.

I'm currently reading "The Deep" by him and really enjoying it. Plus Stephen King blurbed The Troop.

Holy moly, Donna! That's a long wait. Yuck.

Donna | 94 comments I'm currently 94th on the list for one of 10 copies of the audio book. I may just end up buying the Kindle book. :/

ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (allykennedy) | 1002 comments I just checked my library network out of curiosity. The Girl on the Train has 406 holds.
They are ordering a bunch more copies to have a total of 80 copies available.
Wow.

Seems to be this years 'it book'.

It sure does! That's why I'm curious.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Oh, dear God... GIRL ON THE TRAIN has 37 holds on the book and 54 for the e-book... If it wins, I may have to pass...

Put the hold on now! If it wins, it won't be our BOTM until April.

Exactly, you've got over a month before we event start it. Get the hold on now as I have a feeling it will be the winning book.

message 28: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Maybe we should be picking books that are a little more available.

Kirsten wrote: "Maybe we should be picking books that are a little more available."

Well the book is widely available at stores and libraries, with a long lead time before we start reading the book and everyone has a wide choice of books to vote for. If the majority want to read it then that's what we'll do :)

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm 150 out of 295 for The Girl on the Train. I don't think it'll come by the April read but there's always hope! Haha. :)

I might have a look at the schedule and place it at the latter part of the month rather than starting on the first

It's not quite that bad at my library, but still I'll be lucky if I get my copy by May! I'll join in if a minor miracle occurs.

message 33: by Janina (new)

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments It's the same here, but I'll just buy the ebook then. I rarely buy books these days and I'm intrigued by it.

I've also had to wait a long time on books that weren't really popular simply because the county library system only had the one copy. If 5 people want that one copy, you'll have to wait 2-3 months as well.

message 34: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Wow! That's pretty long wait. My library's pretty cool but this book is really popular. I'm hesitant to buy it at full price because it may just be overhyped.

message 35: by Donna (new)

Donna | 94 comments As of today, I'm #84 on the waitlist for 10 copies. I haven't progressed much since Feb 19th, when I was at #94. Looks doubtful I'll clear the list by April, so I'll have to join the discussion at a later time. Kirsten, I'm also hesitant to buy it at full price for the same reason. Looks like lots of people here in my shoes...

message 36: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I may get it by April, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm definitely going to read it, but unless it shows up on the Kindle or Audible Daily deal, I am going to wait for the library copy. I've put in holds for a physical book, a Kindle and an MP3 copy.

I picked it up through Audible. Hope I like the audio version. The sample sounded good. My library consortium currently has 868 holds for 157 copies. There are 66 holds on the 11 audios.

message 38: by Donna (new)

Donna | 94 comments At my library -- audio: 140 holds for 10 copies and Kindle: 552 for 10 copies. I'm sure the publisher is thrilled by all the buzz this book is getting!

Indeed, it very much is the IT book at the moment!

message 40: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) The problem I have with it being the IT book is the fact that I distrust super-popular things (like, say, the Kardashians and preponderance of people to wear the pants dowan around their knees).

I thought about using my credit, but then I thought it might be a waste of the credit. So, I'm just going to wait it out.

message 41: by Justin (new)

Justin (rockstarintraining) I'm listening to it on Audible and the narration is great. I just wish I could actually read it so I could go faster. I used my credit so I could find out what all the hype is about.

message 42: by Diane-OP (new)

Diane-OP On library hold but I'm #1052 - even with multiple copies I'm pretty sure I won't have it in time. Will look for other sources.

message 43: by Deb (new)

Deb Bartram | 115 comments I'm currently 98 on a wait for 47 copies. I may opt for an Audible purchase since there is good feedback here on the narration. :)
