Reporting sample: I’ve read 5 books in the Badge 1 section:
1. Badge 1, Book 5
2. Site 1, Location
3. Link – Ghost Story
4. Listened to Audiobook, Hardcover edition is 567 pages
5. Read a book that is a ghost story.
6. As the title indicates, this is a ghost story. "Ghosts" also show on the main book page as a genre.
Side Trip 1 -The Eagle Stone, Strathpeffer, Scotland.
1. Location : The little village of Strathpeffer gained recognition in 1819 when Dr Morrison, a physician from Aberdeen, bathed in its sulphur springs and cured himself of rheumatoid arthritis. He quickly spread the word and Strathpeffer became a fashionable spa resort attracting thousands of visitors.
Read a book with a main page genre of medicine or a recovery from illness.
2. About : The Eagle Stone is a pre-7th-century Pictish stone connected to a figure from local history – the Brahan Seer, who predicted many future events.
Read a book with a predictable ending. Eg : Miss Marple always figures the mystery out in the end.
3. Souvenir : Cowpat. (Honestly, when my children and I visited the stone, that is exactly what my son tried to bring home with him.) The stone is situated in a farmer's field.
Read a book about animals.
Side Trip 2 -Clayton Tunnel North Portal, Brighton, England.
1. Location - Brighton is a seaside town on the south coast of England. There is archaeological evidence of settlement in the area that dates back to the Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods.
Task : Read a book with Historical as a main page genre.
2. About - This rail tunnel entrance was built to resemble a grand castle but nobody knows why. Originally constructed in 1841, this gothic folly was part of the railway tunnel construction linking Brighton to London. A signalling failure in 1861 led to the infamous Clayton Tunnel Rail Crash causing the death of 23 people. To this day, visitors still report sightings of two ghostly figures walking hand in hand into the tunnel entrance.
Task : Read a story based around a disaster.
Eg : volcano, avalanche, fire etc.
3. Souvenir - Castle Keyring, (quite thin, depicting only the front of one.)
Task : Read a book that takes place in a castle.
Side Trip 3 -The Ruins of the West Pier, Brighton and Hove Boundary Line, England.
1. Location - Brighton and Hove are twin towns, now combined as one city since 1997, on the South Coast of England, and are well known as tourist destinations. The old boundary line is still marked and the West Pier ruins can be seen directly opposite. Rather amusingly everybody who lives here still refers to the towns separately.
Task : Read a book based in either Brighton or Hove, or read a book about twins.
2. About - The West Pier was designed as a pleasure pier by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1866. Between 1918 and 1919 it reached its highest ever recorded figure of 2,074,000 paying visitors. During the good years it boasted a concert hall and tea-rooms and then later became a funfair pier with an arcade and rides. It was the first pier to be Grade I listed in England but has become increasingly derelict since its closure to the public in 1975. The Great Storm of 1987 caused a lot of damage snapping the pier in half, then in 2002 some sections fell into the sea due to storms. Two separate fires in 2003 destroyed most of the remaining structure, leading to English Heritage declaring it beyond repair. In 2022 only a partial metal framework remains.
Task : Read a book with one of the following words in the title - Ruin, Derelict, Decay or Pier.
3. Souvenir - A Pressed Penny.
Unfortunately I was born after the West Pier was closed in 1975, I wasn't able to visit it. So for comparison, I have visited Brighton's Palace Pier many times. As a child I loved collecting pressed pennies, to me they were magical. The machine would stretch the penny and place an image of the location on it. I believe that since the Palace Pier had them when I was young and still has machines for them today, the West Pier would have had them too.
Task : Read a book that contains magic.
