message 1: by Tonya (new)

Tonya Presley | 1169 comments I can't believe I forgot! I was so looking forward to it, and then... well I just minutes ago came inside. It is a beautiful day -- sunny, 70 degrees -- and I cleaned the fountain and got carried away with other things.

Tell me, did anyone watched Station Eleven yet? I have not.

message 2: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 2155 comments Busy bee! Wish it was 70 here.
Not yet still waiting patiently until Jan 30 for it here

message 3: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 11076 comments We missed you, Tonya. Not planning on seeing Station Eleven. Read the book several years ago. Right now I’m just not good for that degree of anxiety again.

message 4: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments A 70 degree day in January is a good excuse for missing the Zoom, Tonya :)

Can you remind me where Station Eleven is streaming? I would consider watching it, but I think maybe it's on a service I don't get.

message 5: by Ken (new)

Ken | 447 comments I read Station Eleven last year and enjoyed it as a lark (pandemics being frequently compared to larks). As for the TV show, the first episode was wonderful. The second episode I could barely get through, it was so boring.

As with books, you can abandon television series, and I did. Station Two is as far as I got.

message 6: by Tonya (new)

Tonya Presley | 1169 comments Sheila, We had a freeze about a week ago, and another is coming just in time for the stock show this weekend (as it always seems to.) Sigh. Texas weather: around here they say if you don't like the weather wait a few hours.
Ruth! You were there! I think you weren't the last time I was.
Lynn, Station Eleven is an HBO show, IIRC.
Ken, I don't remember ever being bored in reading the book, so I suppose they've done something wrong-ish. I can always forgive a little wrong in something I've been so eager for! I will hope it recovers.

message 7: by Carol (new)

Carol | 7657 comments Oops I forgot about the zoom meeting. I thought it was Thursday today.

message 8: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments We missed you, Carol - I hope you can make it next month. The Zoom will be on the 10th then (also a Thursday).

message 9: by Gina (new)

Gina Whitlock (ginawhitlock) | 2267 comments I was at a beading retreat. Hopefully I’ll be at the next one.

message 10: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 786 comments I read the book a few years ago. For some reason, I love dystopia, at least fictional dystopia, I'm pretty darn tired of the real life pandemic. I thought the book was very good conceptually, but the writing was so clunky it made it hard to read. I will probably check out the series if it is ever available on a platform I have access to. At this point I have Netflix DVD and streaming; basic Hulu with ads; Amazon Prime; and the surprisingly excellent DVD and streaming (Kanopy and Hoopla) resources of the Seattle Public Library. I think that's enough!

Theresa

message 11: by Tonya (new)

Tonya Presley | 1169 comments I don't remember being at odds with her writing talents, but I'm like that; I can appreciate and love writing style in an otherwise mediocre book, but I can forgive and overlook all sorts if you've hook me into the right world.

I'm with you on subscriptions--I have a limit. Which is why I haven't watched Station Eleven. I think it is to be a 10 episode series so my thought was to buy a month of two of HBO starting sometime in February. There are surely other things I will watch (never having had HBO) so that is easy to justify. I wonder if this mental calculation goes differently for viewers who have always paid something to watch television, even in the old antenna days?

message 12: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 786 comments Yes. I'd love to watch Ted Lasso, but it's only available on Apple TV and I refused to bite!

Theresa

message 13: by Shawn (new)

Shawn | 113 comments I haven’t seen all the posted episodes yet but I’m on number 6. It is so captivating! I was anxious about watching it given all that’s going on but I got sucked right into it.

message 14: by Ken (new)

Ken | 447 comments Ted Lasso = great stuff (though Season #1 beats Season #2).

message 15: by Mary Anne (new)

Mary Anne | 1986 comments Now it's my turn. My brain is a sieve. I totally forgot our Zoom call. So sorry!

message 16: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments I wondered where you were, MAP! I'm glad it was just "brain sieve" and not something more serious :)

message 17: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 11076 comments Sorry I missed it. I just wasn’t feeling very good and decided to take a lie down instead. In my old age it’s gotten so I get up every morning and wonder which body part is going t bother me today.

message 18: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 2155 comments Apologies for being late to the call last night . In case it comes up somewhere on your US channels This was what lost my time watching

message 20: by Tonya (new)

Tonya Presley | 1169 comments Thank you Sheila! A great thing to do with these is get them on the next list with Barbara, that guarantees we read them (with the bonus that we talk about them.)

Barb?

message 21: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 8208 comments Just saw this and I'm saving the Tokarczuk stories. I probably won't do the New Yorker one because, if you don't have a subscription, you are only allowed a limited amount. Thanks, Sheila!

message 22: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 8208 comments Welcome back, Steve! It’s been too long.

message 23: by Ruth (new)

message 25: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 2155 comments Steve! :)

message 26: by Tonya (new)

Tonya Presley | 1169 comments O. M. G.
Could that be Steve Brassawe? How the hell are you?

It is not so pretentious as you think, talking about the fountain. It appeared in a previous Zoom when I tried to participate from the patio. That didn't work out very well; I needed to invest in lighting.

Are you still watching over the soybeans?

message 27: by Tonya (new)

Tonya Presley | 1169 comments But I'm checking in today because I have Zoom on my calendar, but have not rec'd a link.

Was it changed?

message 28: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 11076 comments Jane sent a link Mar 9. It should be in your mailbox

message 29: by Jane (new)

Jane | 2247 comments The next CR Zoom is Thursday, April 7, at 1 pm PDT. If you would like to join us, just send me your email address.

Today we talked about nicknames, pets, books and stuff to watch at home!

message 30: by Carol (new)

Carol | 7657 comments It was nice seeing everyone. I forgot how much I miss seeing and chatting with people. Thank you Jane for hosting. I bought the book Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. I haven’t been able to read much for the last two years. I am hoping for a kick start with this one. See you all hopefully next month.

message 31: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 1902 comments Thanks for the heads up on next zoom session, Jane. I've put it on my calendar. Our search for a new director at the library should be over by then and I'll have fewer demands on my schedule .

message 32: by Mary Anne (new)

Mary Anne | 1986 comments I'm not sure where to put this, but my husband, Vic, had to have emergency GI surgery last Friday. This will put a halt to his cancer treatment and many other things that constitute a normal life. I may, or may not, be able to keep up with reading our book selections and our Zoom meetings. Who would have guessed that I, with Parkinson's, would be the healthier one of the two?

message 33: by Lynn (last edited Apr 19, 2022 06:58PM) (new)

Lynn | 2297 comments Oh, Mary Anne. I'm so sorry to hear about Vic's latest health emergency. After our last Zoom, I was reflecting on just what you said - that you seem to be the healthier one in spite of your Parkinson's. I'll be thinking about you both and wishing you healthier, less stressful, times ahead.

message 34: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 8208 comments I’m so sincerely sorry to hear this, Mary Anne. I’ll put my meditation wishes for Vic’s health to work. Please tell him that his CR friends are thinking of him.
