This series first book was many years ago and I wasn't interested in the setting so I dove right in to this later novel. With spoilers from earlier books (some necessary, some not) I was able to understand the characters' histories as they related to the essentially stand-alone plot.

Cork O'Connor is the series title character but this novel shared a lot of his son Stephen's point of view and some of an old law enforcement acquaintance, Bo Thorson (who had his own novel that I believe was completely spoiled.)

A senator is flying into town for a meeting about a controversial mine opening. When her plane crashes in the wilderness local law enforcement, search and rescue, and residents of the neighboring town and reservation come to sweep for survivors. Very quickly they are ushered away from the site and slowly begin to disappear. Cork is concerned for his family, several members who were also first on the scene, particularly as Stephen has been having ominous visions mirroring the crash. When ex-secret service agent Thorson is seen in town he and Cork team up to investigate on their own.

Shelved in my library as a mystery is was a slowly unfolding government conspiracy. It's not much of a thriller, though sometimes tense and fighting takes place. As part of a long-running series it only slightly dips into character development, though that includes several of the side characters' histories and relationships with the government and tribe. With no previous experience of the characters it was interesting but not too compelling. I may try the next novel to see how the characters grow and what variety there is to the series' plots.
