Nik Krasno | 19856 comments Discussing here literature, cinematography, music and art in general, we can't possibly ignore architecture. What edifices impress you the most: ancient Pyramids of Giza, the lost city of Machu Picchu, or maybe something more modern like Opera House in Sydney or a broken building of Valley in Amsterdam https://mvrdv.nl/projects/233/valley ? Or your choice, of course

J. Gowin | 7989 comments One of my dreams is to build my own home on some ignored plot of land, where the world will leave me alone. The Ennis House is one of the inspirations for what and how I would build the house in which I would want to meet my end, and then haunt.

Nik Krasno | 19856 comments A cool dream, which some share. Ian Bott even revealed his designs for one here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Ennis indeed reminds pyramids, Maya's though rather than Egyptian...

The Mayan Revival house does look nice.

I've been to Sydney. The harbour area, with the opera house and bridge, is spectacular. That said, I prefer older architecture. Bruges, in Belgium, is very pretty and known as the 'Venice of the North'.

England's most beautiful city has to be Bath - the whole city is a world heritage site and it's only a few miles from Bristol - another major city which is well worth a visit.

Lizzie | 2057 comments Basically, I have only seen photos and I appreciate old building and old houses. Growing up in the northeastern USA, there were a lot of "George Washington slept here" signs on old buildings but I don't think they were significant as architect.

I don't recall seeing in person any buidlings older than a couple of hundred years old. There are some missions from the 1600s that I saw as a child.

In regards to ancient cultures we have only some things left from the ancient Puebloans in Arizona. "Recognized as one of the longest continually inhabited landscapes in North America, see pueblo ruins built between 350 and 1300 A.D. – as well as a contemporary Navajo Indian community that still inhabits the canyon floor, herding sheep during the summer months."
