Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Hiya, Team Caps! Thanks for volunteering to guide your team through a round of BookShelf Bingo!

Your job, should you choose to accept it, will require a few things:
1 ~ Be our go-to person should we have any questions about your team
2 ~ Organize your teammate's weekly reads for each shelf/category so that the BSB Ninjas can quickly and easily verify and approve your stamp request(s)
3 ~ Encourage and motivate your team (you may also ask to borrow Judithe's whip whenever necessary)
4 ~ Post regularly to ensure your team is communicating and on track each week (Send them a PM and friendly poke if they haven't posted at least once a week, noted their book choice, and/or appear to have dropped out of webspace)
5 ~ Send us a PM (Steph, Sandra or Judithe) should you need us for any reason throughout the game

Edited to put master list here. Original post below.

Hi Rachel! I'm short on creativity at the moment. I'll think about the name also and post any ideas I come up with later. I've been the captain a couple times and willing to step in if no one else wants to do it.

message 8: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments Hi Team!
I haven't been on a team with any of you before. Of course, I've only played 3-4 rounds... Anywho, I live in Oklahoma so I'm on Central time. I'll be at work when the shelf is announced so I won't be chanting this round :)

I'm not that great at names either but I'll see what I can come up with.

message 9: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments Some random Names...

Six Shooters
Hot Six
Six Pack
The Hex Nuts
Book Ninjas-(We won an SS round with this one :P)
Bad Monkeys
6 Degrees of _______?

That's all I have for now.

message 10: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Hi Rachel, Daffodil / Nichole.

I did a couple of bingo's before. My memory is kinda wonky, but I think we haven't been on a bingo team together before.

I have never been captain before and I have a one year old kid, so you never know how much free time I have during a day.

Anyway, I'm from Serbia (Europe) and I'm on CET time, so now is bedtime for me. :) Too sleepy to think of names.
I do like the 6 Degrees of ...(something) idea.

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments I like 6 Degrees of..... and The Hex Nuts.
Daffodil- do you want the captain-ship or would you like me to do it?

message 12: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments Okay, I just thought of one more and then I really need to go to sleep! I have to be up in 6 hours >.<

Brides of (Vishous)-Just using him as an example :)

There's also this site Team Name Generator, and others like it.

message 13: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments I played with Team Name Generator too:
The Monsters of Goodreads
TBR Fighters
Bingo Devils
Maestros of Reading
Bookworm Alliance

message 14: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Rachel, I don't mind being captain.

Hmmm, some great name suggestions so far. The Hex Nuts is good. I also like Bookworm Alliance and The Monsters of Goodreads.

The only thing I came up with was an expansion of Nichole's idea: 6 degrees of Serialization. I'm not attached to it, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

message 15: by Daffodil (last edited Feb 17, 2015 06:47AM) (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Steph does have all the potential shelf calls up on the shelf announcement thread, so if you'd like to check them out and start planning ahead click here.

I'm going to go through my TBR when I get a chance and sort out the cover colors and objects.

message 16: by Rachel-RN (new)

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments The Monsters of Goodreads is a good one! TBR Fighters is pretty good too.....we all have massive TBR piles don't we? I do!
Daffodil, the captain-ship is yours!

message 17: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Congrats on captain-ship Daffodil. :)

I really can't pick the specific name, I like all the suggestions. ^.^

message 18: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments I'm easy when it comes to our name. Whatever is decided is good with me. I'm real helpful that way, lol. We can always use the randomizer to pick one from our favorites :)

I love lists! I've already made a list for all the shelves with at least 10 different books to choose from, lol. Then, when the shelf is called, I'll make a new one, haha! I'm pretty sure I have my FS picked out but I'll wait and see what our first shelf is.

On a side note, I bought Game of Thrones S4 today so I'll be marathon watching it over the next couple of days :) My FS book might not get done until next week.

message 19: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments So team name possibilities:

Hex Nuts
The Monsters of Goodreads
TBR Fighters

I still kind of like Hex Nuts. Does anyone have a favorite from this list or should we let the randomizer choose for us?

message 20: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I'll be keeping a master list in msg 7 as well as posting updates throughout the thread here.

I haven't really taken time to consider my Free Space read yet, I'll decide after seeing what the first shelf call is tomorrow.

And Rachel, we were on a team together before. I'll take it as a good sign that we were on the Round 9 winning team: Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies!

message 21: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments I like all three. Maybe it's the best to let the randomizer choose. :)

I love making lists, but I always end up reading something else when the shelf is called, depending on my mood. So I am waiting on a shelf call to pick my books. :)

message 22: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments I like the Hex Nuts too. Or any :P

In a few short hours we'll have our first shelf! Yay!

message 23: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Dragana,

When a shelf is called, I'll go through my TBR and post a couple possibilities on my team thread, stating I'll make my final decision later. At least half of the time, and probably much more often, my final choice is none of the possibilities I'd picked out just a day or two before.

message 24: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Can't wait for that shelf call too.

Haha Daffodil, that's what I do all the time too. :o)

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments Free Space and Favorite:
Each of these are authors/series I enjoy and are on SOS bookshelf for free space. So could use for either shelf. Just need to decide.......
Kitty Rocks the House (Kitty Norville, #11) by Carrie Vaughn Wild About You (Love at Stake, #13) by Kerrelyn Sparks The Eldritch Conspiracy (Blood Singer, #5) by Cat Adams Shades of Gray (The Icarus Project, #2) by Jackie Kessler

message 30: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments Here are my choices.

Free Space: The Witch With No Name (The Hollows, #13) by Kim Harrison
Found on the group's bookshelf. I'll link it with my review.

Favorite: Wrong Ways Down (Downside Ghosts, #1.5) by Stacia Kane

message 31: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments I know I want to read next Murder of Crows (The Others, #2) by Anne Bishop which fits criteria for free space (is on SOS bookshelf).

As for favorite shelf, I'll go with favorite genre - Fantasy. I'm still not sure what I will read, but I narrowed down my choice to:
The Curse Keepers (The Curse Keepers, #1) by Denise Grover Swank The Hero and the Crown (Damar, #1) by Robin McKinley The Burning Land by Victoria Strauss Gates of Thread and Stone (Gates of Thread and Stone #1) by Lori M. Lee

message 32: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I can't decide which is worse: having a narrow shelf with very few choices or a broad range of options (like now) and having too many choices.

Some Favorite possibilities: Alien Research (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #8) by Gini Koch Broken Soul (Jane Yellowrock, #8) by Faith Hunter Death Magic (World of the Lupi, #8) by Eileen Wilks Black Widow (Elemental Assassin, #12) by Jennifer Estep

For Free Space: maybe Hunt the Moon (Cassandra Palmer, #5) by Karen Chance ... or maybe not, LOL

And speaking of Free Space, here's my public service announcement of the day: After you post a rating and review of your book choice in this thread, take a moment to add it to the group bookshelves if it's not already on them. This will help grow the pool of possibilities for future rounds of BSB.

message 33: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Second that! Thank you for adding that, Daffodil! And if you want to run over and post a similar comment on the Bingo discussion thread...

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments This -> Daffodil wrote: "I can't decide which is worse: having a narrow shelf with very few choices or a broad range of options (like now) and having too many choices."

I started reading Murder of Crows so it's definitely going as my free space book.
As for favorite shelf, I already have completely different book in mind. Possibly Firefight by my favorite author. But who knows, probably I will pick something else until I finish first book. :o)

message 35: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I received Touch of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #5) by Diana Rowland through ILL at the library and it is on the Best of UF series list, so I believe that will be my Free Space book.

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments Wild About You 3.5*
Shelf: Favorite
Finished: Feb 21st
This is a fun, light, fluffy series to read when I want something easy to read. Howard's story didn't disappoint. While it's not my favorite, it's also not my least, falling right in the middle.
It was nice to read about previous characters, like Shanna, Tino, Phil. I liked the secondary characters- Jimmy and Jesse. I liked that Rhett got his comeuppance and that storyline got resolved.
This was a little slow to start, but gradually picked up.

Nichole | 1199 comments Rachel, I've had How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire on my TBR for a while now. I'm trying (and failing) really hard to not start too many new series until I finish a good chunk that I have going. I've heard it's pretty funny though :)

message 39: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Nice review Rachel.

I read the first book when it came out, but never got around to continuing the series. Someday, I'll have to get back to it.

I'm a little behind in my reading since I spent most of yesterday fixing a virus on my computer. Hopefully I can get back on track.

Book:Wrong Ways Down by Stacia Kane
Wrong Ways Down (Downside Ghosts, #1.5) by Stacia Kane
Date Read: 2/22/15
Rating: ★★★★☆

Review:

I highly recommend this novella to all Downside fans. If you're a fan of this series, you have to be a fan of Terrible. Let's be honest, he's the reason we love it.

Haven't you ever wondered what goes on in his head? What he does when he isn't with Chess? In Wrong Ways Down we get to see it all.

When street dealers are showing up dead and prostitutes are being attacked it's up to Terrible to find out the who and the why. He deals with it the way he knows best. He does the shake-downs and the beat-downs and gets the answers. But really, that's all just background noise. The heart of the story is getting to know him and what makes him tick.

He thinks about what could have been if he took a different path. Yet, he doesn't regret it. He also makes you look at Bump in a slightly different light. Maybe he's not such a douche after all? I'm not completely convinced on that yet. Sadly, he doesn't think too highly of himself, much like Chess. And he thinks about Chess. A lot. If she could only see herself the way he does, then maybe she wouldn't be the mess that she is. That girl is a train wreck!

“But when he was with Chess he wasn’t the bad guy no more. He was the one keeping her safe, making her smile. He still wasn’t good enough for her, but he were better than he’d ever been. That mattered.”

I know I went on and on with Terrible...but it is his book and I love him so bad, ya dig?

One day, if Ms. Kane ever finishes the next book, I plan on reading the whole series and all of the novellas again. Or I might just do it anyway.

Sandra | 25908 comments I read the first couple of books, but it was just too druggie for me. But I certainly love Terrible, and you're right, he would be the reason everyone reads about Downside.

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Murder of Crows (The Others, #2) by Anne Bishop

Shelf: Free space
Date read: 21. Feb. 2015.
Rating: 4 stars

Although not one of my favorite ufs, this continues to be a very enjoyable series. The second book was more serious and intense with less humor. You see that there is going to be a big clash - war between humans and the others and (hopefully) romance between Simon and Meg.
I kinda missed humor regarding crow-shifters and ponies, but I liked the fact that this book is less similar to romantic suspense genre and shifting of povs was better handled.

message 44: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments @Rachel: I read a couple of books in this series and then... forgot about it. It is good choice if you are looking for light pnr. Thanks for reminding me.

@Nichole: I haven't read Downside, but you got me intrigued.

I started reading Symbiont (Parasitology, #2) by Mira Grant for a favorite shelf, but the plot is dragging and I am bored. I will try to finish it, but I might end up switching and reading something else if my interest continues to dwindle...

message 45: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments One of my favorite books for last year was Written in Red. I really liked Murder of Crows but something was missing for me. Maybe it was the humor like you said? Anyway, I've already pre-ordered Vision in Silver and will be reading it next month sometime. I'm hoping it will fit into Bingo somewhere :)

In regards to Downside...it seems like people either love it or hate it. There really isn't much middle ground, lol. It's not your typical UF. Chess is a junkie and a total train wreck. There is a lot of drug use because of Chess. There is also the Downside chatter that you have to get used to. It took me 3 tries to get started on the first book because I had to keep rereading things. Once I figured it out though, there was no looking back for me. I think the audios are easier.

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments The Eldritch Conspiracy 2*
Finished: Feb 24th
Shelf: Free Space

Very abrupt beginning. It felt like I had missed a book. The love triangle is rather abruptly "resolved." Celia and this other person had a misunderstanding/disagreement (whatever) that happened off the pages. Of course that leaves the one I don't like. He treated Celia badly in past.

I am a bit tired of the "must hate/dislike/be jealous" of Celia for (IMO) are stupid or unexplained reasons. I do think Celia finally accepts herself for who she is, but has stagnated when it comes to fully using her abilities.

Overall, this was a bit frustrating read for me. Not sure if I want to bother reading the next and apparently last book (To Dance With the Devil). Anyone read it? Better?

I am not sure about Downside and whole junkie perspective... I guess I gotta try it to be sure. As for audio, I rarely listen to audiobooks, because they just can't keep me concentrated.
