I chose a peach pie for this challenge. Peach pie is a Southern specialty. The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop takes place in Alabama, but the actual Whistle Stop Cafe where the film was made is in Juliette, Georgia in my county. Georgia is well known for the many different ways to use peaches as they are grown here. One of the most popular ways is making peach pie. Both Alabama and Georgia are Southern states and peach pie can be found aplenty. In addition, in the story, there was quite a bit of Southern cooking described.
I very much enjoyed the story and catching up with the characters of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. I would recommend reading Fried Green Tomatoes first, or you might feel a bit lost. The story chapters flipped back and forth in time and characters and that was a bit disconcerting. All in all, I was pleased with the story and finding out what happened to these characters.

I chose an apple pie. I decided to read Three Apples Fell from the Sky because it has 'apples' in the tittle.
I enjoyed the book a lot. Very interesting story about a small village in Armenia with a touch of magic realism. The story should have been depressing (view spoiler) but it wasn't as it's told as a fairy tale (or Christian fiction?)

I chose Lemon meringue pie
These were the thoughts I had
Lemon Meringue
maybe a book from https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...
Described as a pillow - item of bedding or nightwear on cover / pillow in title
West orange New Jersey bakery - setting New Jersey
Grandma's favourite pie - Character who is a grandparent
Miniature version made at Bakery - book of short stories
In the end I read The Maid
The MC Molly was brought up by her gran - although her gran recently died the narrative is peppered with the rules her gran taught her and Molly constantly "talks" to her"
Molly is a maid in a hotel who discovers the body of a murdered man and is at one point accused of the crime. The solution to the crime centres upon a missing pillow and who might have been holding it
I am therefore linking to the pie through two of my ideas Grandparent and Pillow"
I thought the book was an excellent debut novel. I enjoyed the characterisation as much as if not more than the narrative. Although a "closed room" type of murder mystery it was also a novel where good triumphs over evil. Can thoroughly recommend it

- which pie you selected
I selected Pumpkin Pie
- what task you created
I created the task based on the fact that it is a 'holiday' pie
- how your book fit the task
The book that I chose was set during the Christmas Holiday.
A Christmas Visitor-Anne Perry-2/3-🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧
- what you thought of it
Anne Perry has written a Christmas novella every year for 19 years. Each novella highlights lesser characters from her various series.
Set in the mid 18th century, the plot revolved around the mysterious death of the local judge Judah Deighorn. The Christmas visitor was the godfather of the widow. He is a character from the William Monk series.
As usual, the author was able to provide twists and turns to this mystery which left me guessing throughout. Her character development and descriptions are as always to be cherished. A short but very entertaining read.

Task - Read a book with a red-headed MC
I read Seeing Redd who is a fun villainess

This series is a fun twist on the Alice in Wonderland stories and I plan to continue the series. I also just put a hold on a graphic novel spin-off series from this same universe and am looking forward to that as well.

Key Lime Pie
Needed to read a Graham Greene book (green pie with Graham cracker crust)
Read The Comedians by Graham Greene
This wasn't my favorite Graham Greene. I think I like him best when Catholicism is really prominent in the book. This one was about ex-patriots trying to survive in Papa Doc's Haiti. I may just have been too tired listening to it, and I HATED the narrator, but I just couldn't get engaged in the personal and moral struggles of these characters. I really think the narrator was a huge part of it. He was super unpleasant to listen to, at least for me, and so I disliked all the people he was the voice for by default.

I chose Mississippi Mud Pie and read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because the ingredient is full of chocolate and there's word 'chocolate' in the title.
The book was easy to read and the scenes were mostly similar with the movie adaptation, so it help me in imagining what was going on. It's a great book with a nice moral lesson. I hope I can read more of his other books in the near future.

I picked blueberry pie, because I love blueberries. The task I chose was "to read a book with blueberries on the cover.
I read Midnight at the Blackbird Café

This was a delightful story set in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. Legend has it that the café serves a pie that will bring love notes from people who have passed away. It's light hearted fare that is a welcome break from some heavier themes.

I chose peach pie, and read Four Seasons in Five Senses: Things Worth Savoring

The book is a sensory exploration of his farming operation right through to seeing the harvest to market. Throughout, the author demonstrated his passion for nature and his low-tech organic farming operation. Some essays were more interesting than others (especially those about his family). The book was quite repetitive and sometimes excessively descriptive. I think I may have enjoyed it more if I had a farming background and was able to relate to many of the memories he shared.

I chose sugar cream pie, because it sounded lovely and I've never tried it. As the Wick family used to sell the pie from the back of their Buick, I chose the task of reading a book that featured a Buick. I thought it would be difficult to find one but i read From a Buick 8.
I don't normally read horror, I found this quite sci-fi really even though it's main genre says horror. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was strange and weird but a lot of fun to read. It was a very interesting plot and I really liked the main character Sandy. That Buick was alive, I'm sure of it lol.

I chose Banoffee pie. I’m a pie lover and had never heard of this before. It’s a banana cream pie with toffee. It is an almost exclusively English pie. I’ve had banana cream pie but never with toffee, I’ve been missing out!!
Task:Read a book set in England
I read The Chalk Man. This book is set in a small town in England. I enjoyed it. It was a quick easy read but it had you guessing until the end. I gave it 4 stars.

Apple Pie was the pie chosen for me, because I decided that I wanted to read the same book that Peggy chose based on her pie selection. It has always been one of my favorite pies, no matter how it is presented. The suggested place to try apple pie, Apple Alley Bakery, is located in Julian, CA.
Task: Read a book set in California.
I read the 15th anniversary edition of Pay It Forward.
The setting of story is in Atascadero, California.
The movie, Pay it Forward, released in year 2000, was based on the book of the same name, and when I came across the title in 2015, I added it to my TBR list.
I loved the movie, and I was definitely not disappointed in the book. To fulfill the requirements for an extra credit assignment in his Social Studies class, a young boy comes up with a plan to make the world a better place by designing a pyramid scheme for doing something nice for three people, without receiving any kind of reward or compensation, and having those three people do the same thing for three other people. He called his plan "Pay it Forward".
The story was wonderfully well written, easy to read, entertaining, and heartwarming, and yes, sad. My favorite character was the mother, Arlene. The dialogue, both spoken and thought, in the book was the best part of the reading experience.
I love to do random acts of kindness, when I see an opportunity. I haven't given my car away, nor talked someone off of a bridge, but I do try to look out for things I can do to help make someone's day a little brighter.

I picked Pecan Pie. And the task was based on a line from the description: the pumpkin pie is its heated rival. The prompt was to read a book where someone has a rival or nemesis.
I read Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair. This book has numerous characters with nemeses. The two main characters have a years-long rivalry, two other characters are rivals, and the factions in the story are all nemeses.
This author has been recommended to me several times. This is the first book of hers I have read. It is very much a Space Opera with a lot of world-building. The world-building made the first half of the book a little slow but the storyline did end up speeding up into a really good book. The two romantic storylines were both cute and sweet while being two distinct relationships. The day was also saved by space cats, so that was a nice touch. I'm also planning on reading more of this author's work.

I selected one of my favorites Key Lime Pie.
Since the pie is heavily associated with the Florida Keys, my task was to read a book set there
I read Flush 19 Feb
Author Carl Hiaasen writes crazy mysterious novels with a backdrop of his passion for the preservation of Florida environs. This is the first of his that I have read that was aimed at young people rather than adults.
I was pleased that his young main character found a way to solve a Florida Keys pollution problem, using brains instead of brawn. Displeased that his father did not.
I enjoyed the story and recommend it, especially for young readers.

I helped myself to a slice of Blackberry Pie.
I listened to Blackberry Wine because of cover pic:

This was so disappointing! There was none of the sly humour that I associate with this author in fact there was barely a story. Definitely the poorest work I've had from Joanne Harris. The narration was by Derek Jacobi and the sound quality wasn't great either.

I helped myself to a slice of Blackberry Pie.
I listened to Blackberry Wine because of cover pic:

This was so disappointing! There was no..."
I was disappointed in this book as well.

I read The Pumpkin Eater
I selected Pumpkin Pie
Task: Read a book with pumpkin in the title.
Pumpkin in the title.
I still don't know why the book is called that. Oops.
It's a little bit autobiographical in a sense and my first book from this author. I believe which is why the author could pour her emotions into her writing making for a very sad albeit interesting read. The life of a woman, wife, and a mother and her existential crisis in the absence of a young one to cater to. The writing was good but I didn't necessarily love it.

I read Pay It Forward. It matched with apple pie as the site recommended to eat it in Julian, a small Californian town, and this book was set in a small Californian town.
I watched the movie a long time ago but remember really enjoying it. I've wanted to read the book for a long time. I absolutely love the concept of paying forward, but unfortunately for me the book was too much about Arlene's relationships which I quickly got tired of, and too little about the actual paying it forward. The ending nearly had me in tears though.

Apple Pie
I went simple with "Apple" in title of on cover
My book Apples Never Fall had "Apple" both in the title, and on the cover

I did enjoy it, although I think that I have enjoyed others by this author more? While it was mostly through the filter of competitive tennis, I think it was a really interesting look at the competitive nature in tennis, dance, sibling relationships, spousal relationships, even the effects of a parent on a child in a competitive setting, and the effects on a parent of a child in a competitive setting. I will definitely continue to seek out her books.

I selected a piece of French Silk Pie - yummy!
Task: The French Silk Pie was created in 1951 at the Pillsbury Baking Competition. Read a book that takes place in the 1950's.
I read The Lincoln Highway which takes place in 1954.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It started out really strong and I thought the focus would be the bond between the brothers Emmet and Billy (characters that I loved), but then the focus switched to another character and my interest waned. I did give it 3 stars because I saw what Towles was trying to do with the story, and several of the story lines were real gems. Overall, I love Towles' writing and I will always read what he writes.

I read Apples Never Fall for apple pie. Apples are of course the main ingredient in an apple pie and this book has apples in the title and on the cover.

I enjoyed this one, but it felt it was a bit convoluted at times with a few extra perspectives that might not have been needed, such as random people overhearing conversations or discussing their theories on the main situation. This made the story feel a bit longer than necessary. Also, there was a lot of talk about tennis, which I don't really have an interest in. However, I enjoyed the story, the characters, relationships, etc, and the tennis talk was making a point in the story. Overall, it was well worth the read and I'll continue to read Moriarty's work.

Type of pie: French Silk
Task: The French Silk Pie was the 1951 Pillsbury winner. I choose to read a book set during the 1950’s.
Book: Under the Net by Iris Murdoch
It was published in 1954 and set in (at the time) contemporary London
I had mixed feelings about the book though I think toward the end it really began to win me over. There where moments that where quite humorous and while many of the characters where not particularly likable they where often amusing and interesting. There times though when it could be a bit tedious.
In the first half of the book there does not seem to be a lot that actually happens. Much of the book is discussing various philosophical ideas often while aimlessly wondering around London (often times with several visits to the pub). But towards the last half of the book there is quite the mad caper.
Much of the decisions of the characters seem to be nonsensical, baffling and not really explained. It did very much have that Beatnick vibe of the 1950’s.

- which pie you selected: Pecan Pie
- what task you created: Pecan Pie as the title
- how your book fit the task: I had just added Pecan Pie to my tbr a few days before this challenge was posted and it seemed like fate!
- what you thought of it:
Pecan Pie follows a teenage girl finding her way through a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It does follow a similar story arc to the original but altered to modern life with topics such as peer pressure, bullying and body image issues. These were handled well while sticking giving us a fun fairytale-esque story. I really enjoyed it.

Pie: Pumpkin Pie
My favorite type of pie is pumpkin pie. Autumn is one of my favorite seasons and I love the warming taste of pumpkin pie.
Task: It is served at Dessert Gallery Bakery and Cake in Houston but only three months out of the year.
I read a book that is #3 in a series because the pie is only available 3 months of the year. I read The Moving Fingerwhich is an Agatha Christie novel and it is part of the Miss Marple series.
It is a quaint book about letter writing. The letters are sent anonymously and they are mean and hateful to the receiver. There are parallels with online trolls today, While the book was very old-fashioned and probably not my favorite of all her books, I personally like Agatha Christies style and I enjoyed reading it. There was a twist at the end.

It's been cold and snowy lately and my mind wanders towards more summery thoughts. What can be more summery than a fruity pie? I find myself wanting a lovely piece of pie made from fresh fruit, straight from the oven, with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.
So for February, we are going to indulge that wishful thinking and have a piece of pie.
Go to this website: https://www.groupon.com/articles/diff...
You will find 21 different types of pie. Each one has a description and a great place to try it out. Pick a pie, take some aspect of the description and read a book based on it.
