WOMEN OF LEGEND
Were women's relationships with men in Greece/Roman legends more important?
GREECE:
Homer's Illiad
-> Helen’s marriage to Paris caused the Trojan War which lasted 10 years -> the fact that one woman’s marriage to Paris after leaving her prv. Husband Menelaus had such huge repercussions, not only for those involved, but all Greeks and Trojans, shows how important a marriage bond could be in ancient Greece.
-> Helen weeps for Menelaus when she hears he is fighting Paris. She misses her old life
-> HOWEVER the fact that she left Menelaus could suggest that the relationship didn’t mean much to her but Homer never explicitly says how much a choice she had
Euripedes' Helen
-> Helen was faithful to her husband in the play and goes to great lengths to protect her marriage in Egypt -> in contrast to her parents Zeus and Leda's deceitful marriage
Pandora: Hesiod's Works and Days
-> Pandora's marriage to Epimetheus that causes all the sufferings in the world
ROME:
Livy's History of Rome: The Rape of the Sabine Women
-> The Sabine Women stopped their husbands from fighting their fathers -> they were willing to risk their lives and children's lives to preserve marriage
-> BUT this could mean that they care just as much for their fathers as they do for husbands
Livy's History of Rome: Lucretia
-> Lucretia kills herself after being raped and 'unfaithful' to her husband -> Collatinus believes her and forgives her (cares for her)
-> Her death leads to the abolishment of Roman monarchy: EVERY man in the city defended Lucretia eg. Brutus -> one marriage can lead to so much change
-> HOWEVER the only reason she kills herself is because she's worried about her reputation and not being a bad example -> in some ways, she values this more than the bond with her husband
YOUNG WOMEN
In which society did young girls enjoy greater freedom, Greece or Rome?
GREECE:
Athens:
-> Could potentially receive an education if upper class but according to Menander, 'a man who teaches a woman to write should recognise he is providing potion to an asp'
-> burning axle after marriage -> symbolic of lack of freedom, can't return home
-> married young and duty to bear children
-> birth to death under direct control of kyrios
-> lived in a patriarchal society so considered inferior
-> no outlet for physical or emotional expression (but maybe religious festivals?)
-> couldn't buy or sell land
-> couldn't buy anything worth more than a medimnos of barley per week
-> females confined to gynaikeon -> out of the way
Sparta:
-> 'Spartan girls have to wrestle, run and throw javelin' -> Plutarch's Life of Lycurgus shows that physical exercise was important and done but became a source of mockery in other cities eg in Lysistrata (Aristophanes) showing it wasn't done anywhere else
-> Freedom in sports: first woman to be victor in Olympic games was Spartan (Cynisca)
-> expected to walk naked in some religious processions
-> allowed to inherit land, ⅖ of Spartan property owned by women
-> could decide how to spend wealth, managed kleros, freedom of speech (political discussions)
-> BUT still patriarchy, obliged to bear children, have to always be physically fit, couldn't go to war
Rome:
-> spent life under direct control of paterfamilias, held patria potestas
-> usual for Roman girls to be taught reading, writing, arithmetic from a litterator
-> usual for most of time to be spent indoors
-> "Sappho" fresco -> suggests upper class women were proud to be educated but since it is an asset, is it unique?
-> no state education so maybe daughter was too expensive to teach
-> advanced subjects taught to boys however some evidence of girls being taught rhetoric eg. Maesia was able to defend herself in court, but this is unique (nicknamed Androgyne)
-> Catullus: 'your virginity is not wholly your's: no freedom over marriage even though law states girls can reject fiancé although this is unlikely
-> can inherit property
-> Bride during marriage would wrap wool around door posts signalling domestic role

Welcome to Katos! Katos consists of West Katos and East Katos. Both were extremely wealthy lands but the ruler of West Katos refused to fully unite with East Katos. Finally, The ruler of West Katos gave in and said there would be a ceremony. But sadly, The ruler of West Katos died. West Katos was so distraught that they blamed it on East Katos and started a war. West Katos won and took all of East Katos power and money. So now the lands were divided. The people of West Katos lived a warm and good life as East Katos struggled to survive.
In this RP, You will create a character to live in either East or West Katos( both very different experiences), Rp with others, And have fun!

A student is given three metals, X, Y and Z to identify.
The metals are magnesium, iron and copper.
Plan an investigation to identify the three metals by comparing their reactions with
dilute hydrochloric acid.
Your plan should give valid results.

reddie fanart
Aquarius is very social and loves making new friends, while Leo loves being the life of the party. Fiery Leo will most likely make the first move, but will want Aquarius to prove their worth by pushing the relationship further
**
When Taurus and Leo come together in a love affair, they can be a great couple because they know how to stroke one another’s egos and love to have their own stroked! They have similar needs: Taurus needs plenty of affection, to be loved and cherished, while Leo likes compliments and wants to be adored and admired.
They’re both extremely loyal and possessive lovers. Since they have such similar desires, they can generally provide for one another’s needs quite well
