Challenge rules:
*No graphic novels, poetry or cookbooks allowed.
*Follow your own time zone. If you finish the book between the theme dates in your time zone, it counts.
*You must be able to justify how your book fits the theme. Example: If the theme is cats, then your book can have a cat on the cover, a cat in the book, can be all about cats, etc. If you can justify it, then it will work. Let's keep this easy.
Standard Rules Apply

Themes
March 1-7 Green
March 8-14 Gold
March 15-21 Shamrocks
March 22-31 Leprechauns

*Theme Start & End times are based on your time zone. So the Green theme will end on March 7th at midnight in the time zone that you live in.*

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 836 comments Hey Team!!! May the luck of the Irish be with us this during this month's challenge. I don't really do a lot of preparing as I am a mood reader and just kind of roll with it.

I look forward to reading with all of you while we talk and share books!!!!

Nanci | 256 comments Hi Robin and team! Nice to see some familiar names. It should be pretty easy to find "green" for this first week. I'm in UNO and reading a green cover book, ( The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave so that's one book that will fit right away.

Has anyone else read it yet?

message 4: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments I have my first book picked, UNO book for me too:
The Less Dead by Denise Mina
Now to start thinking of what to do for the others....

Nanci, I read The Last Thing He Told Me. It's good.

I got a message today asking if I would join an UNO team. I rejoined the group and took the position. I feel really lost and confused starting it right in the middle : ( so not to sure how I will do with it.

I will be looking through my books today to see what green ones I can find LOL Will let you all know what I find.

GO TEAM GO!!! Happy Reading to you.

Robin,
That's awesome you made it on an UNO team! They are going to love having you with all that you read! I wish you could have been on our team. I'm a co-captain and have played for years. Don't be shy to ask questions when you don't understand...I'm sure your team will be great at answering them. There are so many ways to make any book fit, so just read what you like and they'll find a spot for it!

Ugh! Bad enough that your daughter is in sunny, warm Arizona, but to have your iPad there too...that's rough! Just give a shout if you need help!

Nanci | 256 comments We're doing great this week! One more day to post a book for Green theme. We have 24 points and King Bryan team has 10 points. I should finish one more before March 8.

Agreed!!!! WTG Team. I just posted my books. We are currently at 39 points with King Bryan at 19 points. It's nice to stay ahead just in case we don't have as many books that fit in later!

Hope you all are starting off the week with some great reads!

I'll be updating my books tonight....were did this week go?!?!

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 836 comments Angie ☯ wrote: "I'll be updating my books tonight....were did this week go?!?!"

I was wondering the same thing about this week. It was just yesterday it seems that it was March 1. I swear the older I get the days/weeks/years pass by in the blink of an eye.

message 22: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 256 comments For our gold week I'm going to read Empire of Pain The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe . All the writing on the cover is gold.

message 23: by Mary (new)

Mary Bronson | 110 comments I have a few titles I can do. I am just trying to see if I can get 1 or 3 of them read. Don't know if that is possible lol

message 24: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 256 comments My book, Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty is 535 pages. I will get it done by the 14th as it's due back to the library then, but I won't get any other books done for gold. It's really good, but nonfiction and long, so not reading very fast.

message 25: by Mary (new)

Mary Bronson | 110 comments I am going to try and get the rest of my book read for today. Sorry my week and weekend has been super busy

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 836 comments Mary wrote: "I am going to try and get the rest of my book read for today. Sorry my week and weekend has been super busy"

No worries : ) RL does disturb our play time sometimes. I didn't get a lot read yesterday because I had adulting to do. Just take your time, relax and enjoy. We are here to have fun anyway. That's what's important.

message 27: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 256 comments I have a bunch of books that I'm committed to read for my UNO team challenge. I'm off to check to see if any of them have "shamrocks" in the text.

message 28: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 256 comments Bummer! None of my books has shamrock/shamrocks in the text. I looked at a bunch of titles with shamrock/shamrocks in the title, but only found one ebook at my library and I'm #3 on the waitlist, so that's not going to work.

If anyone finds a short book, that is in ebook format or even audio I can check my library online. This is a hard task because we're still on our trip. Sorry if I'm not able to find anything for this week!

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 836 comments Nanci wrote: "I have a bunch of books that I'm committed to read for my UNO team challenge. I'm off to check to see if any of them have "shamrocks" in the text."

I know I have seen it some where before....but how do you check to see if books have "certain words" in the text?

message 30: by Jenny (last edited Mar 14, 2022 02:58PM) (new)

Jenny | 2185 comments The two ways I know about are Google books and Amazon's Look Inside feature.
For Google, when you find the book, you can type the word you are looking for in the search window. It may not always tell you what page it is on.
For Look Inside, when you are on the book page, look at the top of the page and click on paperback or hardcover. Then a search window opens up on the left side of the page. Type in the word.
Kindle books (Look Inside) don't have a search option for some reason.

message 31: by Jodi (new)

Jodi | 148 comments Hey… I know for the next 2 weeks our selections are slim for Shamrock and Leprechaun…. However she did say that if you can ‘justify’ it then go for it. Do you all think that reading books set in Ireland or by an Irish author etc… ties into Shamrocks and Leprechaun’s? They are both tied to Ireland and the book takes place in Ireland? The author is from Ireland? Too far of a stretch?

message 32: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2185 comments I think if we get very creative, it might work. Say the book takes place in Boston, and you happen to do a Google search and find out that there is a bar called Leprechaun's Tavern, owned by a guy named O'Reilly, and there is a character in your book named O'Reilly, then we might be forgiven for taking a chance.

Just saying.

message 33: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2185 comments And woohoo! I found Shamrock in one of the books I am reading for Uno. One of them.
I wonder how I could tangentially relate Leprechaun to One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Think I could argue that surely one of the little men spent time in a Russian gulag? Ok, maybe not,

message 34: by Mary (new)

Mary Bronson | 110 comments I'm reading We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange not only it is an Irish family, but it also has shamrocks on the cover.

message 35: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 256 comments I read We are the Brennan’s. Such a good book! I’ll try to message the mod and ask about some of the ideas you mentioned. I did find books that have leprechaun in the title, but I can’t find copies on my library catalog, only hard copies.

Also, if you have a kindle reader you can also tap the magnifying glass, type leprechaun in the search bar and if it’s in the book it will give you the location. So great some of you have found the word or picture!

FYI, you might want to check out the pre-game chat. I placed a bunch of books (some of which are on KU) there that you guys might be interested in.

message 39: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2185 comments Nanci, it was Shamrock that I found in my Uno book, not leprechaun.
The book is The Book of Lamps and Banners (Cass Neary, #4) by Elizabeth Hand , which I am enjoying immensely so far. It is part of a series, so I wouldn't jump right in unless you have at least been introduced to the character of Cass Neary. The first book was Generation Loss (Cass Neary, #1) by Elizabeth Hand .

Donna, you want six degrees of Kevin Bacon, you will get those degrees. I am excited!

Thanks!!! I will definitely try that out. I thought that was how I started but didn't know the next steps LOL

message 44: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 256 comments Thanks Jenny! I realized after I wrote the message that I meant shamrock, but I never got back to correct it.

Donna, thanks for giving us the “green” light! Get it?🤪
Haha! We’ll take full license on our creativity!

message 45: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 256 comments I broke down and signed up for KU again. It's just too difficult finding ebooks at my library that fit.

Thanks for the huge list, Donna! I found a bunch for both shamrock and leprechaun, so now I'll see how many I can complete!

Gold Week Scores

Lucky: 91
King Brian: 75

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 836 comments Hello team!!! I hope this week's reading is going well for all of you. I have a quick question. I finished another book on 3/21 for Shamrock week but was unable to get it checked in yesterday. RL got in the way of my play time. Can I still check it in?
