I finally finished this book and am a bit amazed to see no-one has commented in this section, whereas many of you seem to have read the book (now or in the past couple of years.

Personally I loved the book. I needed some time to really get into it, but the second half really engaged me. It is a book about loss and love between family members, unspoken feelings, untold secrets, that have a tremendous impact. Each one of them somehow feels excluded, worth less than the others, and the whole does not seem to be a family, a home. But then, towards the end things do come together, are revealed, even though it is somehow too late.

I liked the style of the book. The descriptions, the creativity, the changing viewpoints. It blended well with the emotional storyline.

What did you think?

I really appreciated the structure and you do get the feeling that everyone feels an outsider in the family. Yet, mostly it is stories that they tell themselves rather than the perception of the other family members. Easy to get into, though.

Orgeluse | 481 comments It has been a while since I read and discussed this novel in my real life bookclub but have planned a re-read for this year. So I will report my thoughts back and let you know whether it still is a 5-star-read for me... as far as I remember I liked the writing style and the atmosphere...
