Back to the Future, by George Gipe

Too bad I can’t find a topic to include it in this year’s list, but I’m reading this straight away.
Read for a book with a time related word.
I’ve fallen really behind on reviewing the books I’ve gone through this year, so I haven’t really bothered, but this one was too good to pass up.
Discovered a YouTube channel called Audiobooks for the Damned dealing in dramatic readings of that most surreal genre, film novelisations, so I’m planning on going through the whole series.
This book was a trip and a half. Based on an older version of the script and written by someone who clearly thought they needed to “explain” everything that happened, it’s like looking through some twisted funhouse mirror. I love the movie, but this book takes all the problematic elements of the plot and unintentionally amps them up to the point of absurdity.
Marty is kind of a dick, everyone makes fun of his green shoes, and every moment of dramatic tension gets undermined by the characters overanalysing what is happening for several paragraphs. Rather than demonstrating his burgeoning romance after saving Lorraine, George obsesses over a missed hero moment in the third grade without a single thought of her. Even weirder is the fact that even though everyone hears and acknowledges Marty clearly talking about being from the future, no one seems to care. It does explain a few things, mostly what was in the deleted scenes, but at what cost?
Oh, well, onto part 2.
