Ronja (ronjawagner) | 73 comments My initial goal was 12 books, but after reaching that goal by the end of april I decided to change it to 24 books. Again, after reaching that goal by the end of june i changed my goal one last time to 40 books! Seems reasonable and every book I finish on top of that will be a bonus!
Still trying to read and re-read all the books on my shelves before buying new ones (I'm failing horribly).

The books I already read this year are:
1. Mit den Augen der Orcas
2. Samira and Samir
3. Light is the New Black: A Guide to Answering Your Soul's Callings and Working Your Light
4. Der General, Marlene Dietrich und Ich
5. Es kann nur eine geben (audiobook)
6. Gemini: Harness the Power of the Zodiac
7. Wellenglitzern
8. Gregor the Overlander
9. Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane
10. Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods
11. Gregor and the Marks of Secret
12. Gregor and the Code of Claw
13. Die Flaschenpost
14. Happy Aua 2
15. Ein langer Brief an September Nowak
16. Die Steine der Zwillinge
17. Tschick
18. Bilder deiner großen Liebe
19. Ich komm mal vorbei: weil ich euch mag
20. heute graben
21. Verloren
22. Inselleuchten
23. Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee
24. Das Blubbern von Glück
25. Naerima: und die gestohlene Vergangenheit
26. Die Ladenhüterin (audiobook)

Ein langer Brief an September Nowak

Update - Page 20:
Yesterday I decided to start this book! I'm only on page 20 but I don't really know if I like the writing style of this book tbh. It's definitely different to what I thought it would be like, but i'll try to remain open-minded.

Update - Page 21:
On hold for now because I can't bring myself to pick this book up again, maybe next week :(

Update - Page 36
Picked this book up again (almost one month later), getting into the flow now and’m beginning to enjoy it a bit more.

Update - Page 54
Loooved the insight into the letters!

Update - Page 105
Where are we? What is happening? I'm so confused to why there was a time jump at this point.

Update - Page 154
I like the setting better now and and I think this part is what i imagined the whole book to be like (It wasn't for the most part) But it's getting a little teeny tiny bit boring now. But, only 50 pages to go!

Update - Page 194
The Main character is kind of unreasonable. Also, the author jumps between reality and imagination as well as past and present in a way, that makes it very unclear where we are and what's happening and if

Update - Finished
I liked the ending and will probably pick this book up again at some point, but all in all I didn’t love it and would not recommend.

Gregor the Overlander

Update - Page 41:
Okay I just realized that I remember nothing about this book. It's crazy when you re-read something after such a long time, it's like you recognize every word but you still feel like you're reading the book for the first time. And another good thing: you don't know what's going to happen. (Probably read this book somewhere around 2013, I can't pinpoint it exactly, but that's just crazy!)

Update - Page 100:
Nostalgia is unreal reading this book. I also really love how fast-paced it is!

Update - Finished:
Okay I read the rest of this book in one sitting and it was great! Nostalgia probably influenced my emotions towards this book, but all in all a very enjoyable and quick read!

Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane

Update - Page 157:
I love reading a full on series because you just get to enjoy the characters for so much longer! Usually i mostly read stand-alone books, so this is a nice perk of re-reading this series. Planning on finishing this book today!

Update - Page 182:
The last book as well as this book each have a journey the protagonist has to take and master and I do have to say that those journeys are definitely one of my favourite elements of this book. I think due to not much else Happening (which is not really true tbh but we don't have a lot of scenery changes due to the missing light aspect in the underworld) you really get to know the characters.

Update - Page 207:
Tbh I really do think all of this is a bit much for an eleven-year-old. That's the only thing that makes the Story a bit less realistic. Eleven actually is really young, and a lot of the things Gregor says or does seem like he's a lot older. But it's a book so, you know, things don't always have to make sense. Still, it wouldn't have hurt if the author made him at least thirteen or something.

Update - Page 218:
There is so much happening already but I know that it's definitely going to get worse. Kind of overwhelming. That's it.

Update - Finished:
Loved it. Loved the open ending. Glad I got to finish it today, will start the next one tomorrow!

Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods

Update - Page 96:
It's kind of ironic reading this book during a global pandemic. It feels so much more realistic and tangible than it felt reading it as a child (because back then the world was still “normal”).

Update - Page 156:
I'm not as confused as I probably should be, but still: I'm shocked over and over again about how little I remember about these books.

Update - Page 183:
It's so real that it hurts. Like I already said, reading this book during a global pandemic makes it much more tangible, and I don't know if I like it. You can really feel their pain thinking about their loved ones dying and not being able to help or be there for them.. so many people must have felt the same in the last 2 years, it's just heartbreaking.

Update - Page 216:
OMG FINALLY

Update - Finished:
I loooved this book, omg. Better than the last one tbh, although all of them are veery good. I have to say, I think I liked the journeys of the last two books better, but everything else was so perfect that it still was an awesome read. I also cried like two times (Not me crying over a children's book) because idk, it was just really sad at times and I really felt for the characters. But I'm soooo ready to start the next book in this series! Also feeling a bit uneasy because there’s only two books left and lemme tell ya, at this point I'm attached, like attached attached to these characters...

Gregor and the Marks of Secret

Update - Page 125
I was in kind of a short reading slump over the past week, and so I was kind of confused about what's happening after picking this book up again. I feel like this book is going to be different from the others in this series, don't know why, just a feeling.

Update - Page 172
Usually everything revolves around the prophecies, but now we don't know the prophecy which makes it a bit harder to follow along. In the other books it was clearer where we're at, maybe that was due to the prophecy slowly unraveling as the story progresses. I guess that is what feels different. But other than that I'm (of course) enjoying the book so far, even though I don't know if I like it as much as the other ones (don't quote me on that, I'm only about halfway through the book sooo)

Update - Page 221
It's slowly getting better but still, something just doesn't sit right with me.

Update - Page 226
Okay now something is happening, I was waiting the whole book for Ripred to be back but what the hell

Update - Page 293
I'm crying

Update - Page 294
I'm crying hysterically

Update - Finished
I'm done, this got so dark so quick, omg. Everything in me was dying while reading this book, and I'm horrified about what's going to happen in the last book. I actually remember a few things about said last book (other than with any of the other books) and I'm not ready for them to happen. Watch me cry throughout the whole 350 pages that are in the last book.

Die Flaschenpost

Update - Page 65
Crazy, just crazy how nothing was private back then. I mean, everything soo different back then, and this was only like 30 years ago. Which is a long time if I think about it now, but still.

Update - Page 67
Your Berlin / our Berlin - as if there were two cities with the same name! It just seems so unreal to me, that there were two germanys, and they used to operate like two different countries.

Update - Page 108
No privacy whatsoever. Just crazy. Imagine the only freedom you have left is the freedom of your thoughts. But you can't verbalize those thoughts in any way, or you may or may not be in trouble. And this is the ‘80s. How much worse must it have been earlier in history, like during WW2 (e.g. Sophie Scholl, but that’s obviously not comparable). What a weird and intangible thought about something that was “normal” and totally real not even 50 years ago.

Update - Page 126
I really like how the characters are written. The author still keeps a distance, but they are very realistic and true to their circumstances. Also, the children are actually children and written with a childlike simple-mindedness, which I love.

Update - Page 171
Crazy how the people really didn't sense anything. Even almost right before the fall of the Berlin Wall, everyone still didn’t have any clue.

Update - Finished
Omg I really loved this book tbh. It was just really clever and well-thought-out, and I loved the insights it gave into the history of Berlin. I do have to say, I didn’t expect the ending to be how it was, because obviously we live in 2022 and the fall of the Berlin Wall was decades ago, so that the people were still believing that nothing was going to change, even two years before (when the author wrote this story) is just a crazy thought. Would definitely recommend and will probably read again at some point.

Gregor and the Code of Claw

Update - Page 84
Everything is happening at once and I kind of love it. Even though it's horrible and disgusting, at least it's not boring. But it's crazy how everything got so dark so quick and how it's now continuously getting worse.

Update - Page 99
This was the most second-hand embarrassment I've felt in a really long time.. irgh

Update - Page 138
Why do they even send him to fight in a war that makes no sense at all omg - HE'S TWELVE

Update - Page 191
This is the point where I'm crying again.

Update - Page 233
Last Part of the book, well, here we go. I know what's to come, but I still don't want to think about it, even though it could happen any page now. God, I hate that I remember the plot twist and the plot twist only, that’s so frustrating

Update - Page 257
Oh no

Update - Page 304
Here we are. I really want to cry now, but I somehow can't. I really don't want to continue reading. I knew that it was coming, but still.. this is too much for my pool little heart

Update - Page 305
Now I'm crying. It's so bad.

Update - Page 312
I THOUGHT IT WAS BAD, BUT IT JUST GOT WORSE. I'M CRYING HYSTERICALLY. NO. I did not remember that part and this is so unfair noooooo that jut can't be no no no

Update - Page 322
My biggest THANK YOU to the Author at this point. Still crying, but now happy tears. This was so bad. The last 10 pages were bad. This now is good. It's so good.

Update - Finished
I think I still need time to process this book. It definitely was all over the place and I did not enjoy it was much as the other ones, but I felt so many emotions during reading it, (cried several times, of course) that I just can’t say it was a bad book. For now, I'm equally sad and relieved that I finally finished this series. If I were to read it again, I don’t know if I would put myself through reading the last book again. Maybe I would just stop after the fourth one and call it done. The ending also was something. It neither was happy nor sad, but it did not fulfill me completely. I don’t know, mixed feelings. In the best and worst way.

Die Steine der Zwillinge

Update - Page 76
I'm really invested already, although nothing really exciting happened yet. It seems to be a really easy but interesting read, I'm looking forward to getting into the Story more!

Update - Page 81
Now I’m really intrigued what this character has to do with the main storyline. This segment adds a kind of mystery, which I really like.

Update - Page 105
I think we are reaching the part of the story where the prologue takes place, and I’m really excited for that! Because what happens after that is kind of blank right now, and I’m really interested how this story unfolds. I also do love that it’s such an easy read, it’s really enjoyable!

Update - Page 157
Still really enjoying this book, but I have to say that the chapters are very short. Which is obviously due to the switching of the perspectives of the characters but for me personally, longer chapters make you more invested in the story!

Update - Page 179
Tbh it's a bit unrealistic to be that sure somebody is watching/following you if there is like zero evidence to back that up. Of course, you can have a weird feeling, but to be that sure, idk..

Update - Page 242
So many weird random people, I'm so interested in getting to know who they are and what they add to the story.

Update - Page 317
I am so confused. I don't know if the story needs this element, but we'll see.

Update - Page 358
Okay, It's actually pretty cute, and I like how this Story is turning out. Still 40 pages to go, but I'm already sure thus book will be a new favorite of mine!

Update - Finished
Great book, loved it! Will probably read again at some point, but I have to say, it had its flaws. But that didn't make it any worse of a book, still a very enjoyable read that I would recommend any day!

Ronja (ronjawagner) | 73 comments heute graben by Mario Schlembach
heute graben

Update - First Booklet
I have to say, the writing style is quite unique and different! It didn't take me long to really get into it. I also noticed quite early on that death is presented very incidentally. I mean, you get used to things over time, so it's quite conceivable that even a topic like death becomes more and more normal for you, the more you have to deal with it. Nevertheless, it was a little strange at first.
Recurring themes run through the protagonist's life: work, illness, love and his dreams. You really get to know him through his emotions about these things.
What I do have to say, however, is that at this point I'm not as interested in knowing who A. is. For now, I'm rather looking forward to getting to know the protagonist better!

Update - Second Booklet
I find it interesting that despite all the different women in his life, A. is still the main one he thinks of. I'm slowly beginning to wonder what it is that makes her so special.
Another thing that's fascinating to me is how indifferent he writes about the few facts he knows about the deceased he's burying. I tend to always want to know more about these people, although that would add nothing to the plot whatsoever.
It's also very intriguing that his illness plays out like a very minor supporting role in his life. You'd think that with something so significant, you'd think about it all the time, but he rather represses it.

Update - Third Booklet
The illness now becomes more and more a part of his life, and he can no longer ignore it. Throughout the booklet, it becomes one of the two main components of his life, or one of two extremes. The other extreme is the enormous dependence on J. that he develops. He is slowly but surely becoming afraid of his own life and where it is going, especially with a view to the disease. Therefore, he tries to hold on compulsively to something that is worth living for, although he rationally knows, that this love is nothing but hopeless. But by focusing on idealizing J. he doesn't have to face his real problems.

Update - Fourth Booklet
Like I already said after reading the second Booklet:
,,I find it interesting that despite all the different women in his life, A. is still the main one he thinks of.''
His focus is very much on writing at the beginning of this part, but his illness play a growing part in his life. He's also starting to just function without really living.
Death seemingly moves closer and closer to him and is almost no longer an everyday occurrence for him. My interpretation here is that he recognizes himself in the dying process of his dog, respectively his "approaching end", which he seems to be sure of.
Also exciting: in this booklet we learn the name of the protagonist! He now has something that all the women in this book do not have: a name.

Update - Fifth Booklet
We finally learn who A. was in the eyes of the protagonist and how he knew her. What we don't learn is where she went.
Still, it feels a bit like a happy ending. But at the same time, like the story is starting all over again.
In places the book reminded me of Fräulein Else by Arthur Schnitzler, which of course has a very different focus. But the losing of oneself and the indefinable chaos of love managed to create some parallels. Also the being unsure of whether the person is dead or not, stands out here.

Update - Page 55
I hate when people who are clearly the victim get in this sort of trouble. Because they always get caught the one and only time they do something bad, while all the other times other people bullied them get unnoticed. Also, not really loving the storyline so far, a bit dark for my liking.

Update - Page 65
It's unclear to me, why there was a time leap into the future without really mentioning how much time has passed. There are also a lot of passages that don't make sense at all and are just unnecessary and them there are ones, which try to bring the story forward but kind of don't. But all in all, I like this part better than the first one so far.

Update - Page 112
I liked the change in their points of view, but other than that, nothing really exciting is happening.

Update - Page 188
It's very clear now that all these characters are flawed and have their own Problems to deal with. And how they deal with them is so very different, it's almost scary. Also, one thing I hate more than anything else is having double standards, which now seems to be a theme too.

Update - Finished
Wow. I didn't think that this book would do a 180 turn like that, but it did. I have to say, the last 70 pages were really well written and thought out. Nothing really original, I must say, but still, evacuated beautifully and very gripping. I was also very happy with the ending and how the author really rounded things up.

Sommerflimmern

Update - Page 125
Liking this book as much as the last ones, although it’s a bit deeper than the others! But the romance part starts quite early, don’t know how I feel about that.

Update - Finished
Sadly, I didn't get as engaged with this book as with the last ones but it still was an easy read.

Poppy. Dein Kind verschwindet. Und die ganze Welt sieht zu.

Update - Page 82
So far you could dive very well into the story, the author really succeeded with the entry to this book! I had difficulties to get through the characters at the beginning, but that has now completely resulted. But there are still many questions to be answered and I'm excited to read more!

Update - Page 154
On page 112, Emer's "purple eyes" were mentioned again. I find that somehow misplaced? So far, the book got along well without this somewhat ''supernatural'' and it takes away a little closeness to the book in my opinion. Because that's exactly what I find particularly good about the book - that it feels so tangible and close to reality! Especially through the topic of social media.

Update - Page 236
There are many inconsistencies between the different characters, which means that many characters could have something to do with the disappearance of Poppy. This makes it even more exciting to be in suspense about who really did it!
Emer herself becomes more and more likeable the further along we get. At the beginning I didn't find her particularly exciting as a character, but now that you realize how much she fells for this case, I find her better and better.

Update - Page 308
The book increasingly manages to captivate me more and more. Slowly everything is uncovered... It is frightening how negligently the safety of a family is treated here, just to get a few clicks and likes.
A big applause from me to the author for the pages 284-290. I have not felt so intensely with a text passage for a long time. Normally only series or movies can do that, because you also have visual and auditory elements. Here, however, I was completely in the book and could feel and empathize with how the mood rose and fell. Simply great!

Update - Finished
Wow. Just wow. I absolutely did not see this ending coming, but it was insanely well thought out.
