P.J. O'Brien | 114 comments I've just discovered David Brining on Smashwords. He seems to have quite a range from historical fiction, comedy, conspiracies, alternate viewpoint teen thrillers, and a series of short bittersweet vignettes about a family in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet empire. What I've seen so far is well-written, and for right now, free. Just reading his tag-cloud is intriguing and entertaining.

Excellent. I'm going out right now to check him out.

Thanks for the pointer, P.J. I checked out some of the short stories from Russia and they were interesting.

Has anyone read anything by Thomas P. Hanna? I found him on Smashwords when trawling after PJ's suggestions. His most recent:
http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/... seems to be an allegory about humans set in an ant colony.

He seems to be your kind of writer, PJ. He gets the ant gender roles right from what I can tell so far. A lot of his other books are here on goodreads and it looks like he's got a really wide range, from sci-fi fantasy, science & tech, humor, and maybe light-hearted romance and/or porn (?). It's hard to tell at first glance. He's a former biology teacher according to his blurb. I didn't see the new allegory (Ant Hill) that he's just posted on Smashwords here in GR, but here are others that do show up here:
Visible Parts of Plants
The Far-Out Show
The Drackenmire Ghouls' Treasure Trickery
Adam Archer Becomes an Alien Visitor: A Novel for Young Readers
Romeo and Juliet and Todd and Alice
Lotta Losers
Boobs

P.J. O'Brien | 114 comments I did notice "Ant Hill" today and downloaded the sample after reading a few pages. It will be a while before I get to it, but I was very happy to see that the worker, security guard, and leadership roles matched what they would be in an ant colony.

After all, as my GR friend Richard McGowan just posted in his blog, it's International Women's Day. And while I don't really expect any special consideration other than fairness, safety, and justice no matter what one's gender identity, I do think that even allegorical ant workers deserve their propers today.

P.J. O'Brien | 114 comments I just edited the name of the topic, Faerie; Hanna's books aren't free. Do we want to make different topics based on free ones vs not, or just work with this one for a while?

BTW, I did include his plant book in my TBR stack. I'm such a sucker for that sort of thing when the sun bouncing off the snow makes me restless for spring.

Renaming the topic is fine with me.
