Becky Mayes (addicted2itall) | 8 comments I want some books that will scare the crap out of me and not the usual Stephen King or Anne Rice.

I want Ghost stories and mystery thrillers that make me question every bump in the night.

Please help!

Not scary enough. The Fog, by James Herbert was so stupid. Thanks anyway.

Becky Mayes (addicted2itall) | 8 comments Not scary enough. Looking more for ghost stories.

Here is the problem. I read Dracula when I was 7 years old, quickly followed by Frankenstein. Anne Rice and Stephen King became bedtime stories (Anne Rice is a little long winded and Stephen King is kind of predictable)

The Haunting of Hill House was so boring. The book seemed more like a woman with mental problems, than ghosts, the movie and TV show were better.

Ring isn't too bad, but I think it loses something in the translation.

I think this may be a fruitless search. I think I am too difficult to scare.

Saw the movie. It is the poor man's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and not at all scary.

SamSpayedPI | 2306 comments What books do you find scary? It would help to know the sort of thing you're looking for.

You ask for ghosts, but I personally don't find ghost stories all that scary because I know for a fact (view spoiler)!

I get more scared from Deliverance-type novels that could happen in real life.

While you say you know for a fact that Ghosts are NOT real, I know for a fact that they are!

What books do I find scary... NONE, that is the problem. I truthfully do not find anything all that scary.

Do you have any ideas regarding what would make something scary for you? For example, would it be scarier not knowing what the monster is? Or maybe stories that seem like they could happen in real life (like some dystopia novels) would be more your jam?

message 17: by Becky (new)

Becky Mayes (addicted2itall) | 8 comments No dystopia novels, the planet is heading that way as it is, no need to fill my fiction with it.

As I keep saying, (yet no one seems to pay attention to) is that I want Ghost Stories. Something like The Haunting of Hill House (The TV show, not the book) or Crimson Peak. Haunted Houses, bumps in the night, someone speaking from an empty room. Something that messes with your mind.

CraftyChara | 2120 comments The Shining You probably already read this
This House Is Haunted
Hell House
Doctor Nine

Tales from the Fire Zone Property Condemned : Set in Pine Deep, the small town featured in Ghost Road Blues, Dead Man's Song, and Bad Moon Rising, this is a chilling psychological ghost story.

I hope that these help

Thank you so much, that list is fantastic. You are right, I have read the Shining when I was a kid. (I was a weird kid) .

Hey, my mom read Carrie when she was ten so no judgment from me.

I'm glad that you like the list. Enjoy!

Linda | 6 comments I have a hard time getting scared from books, and from what you described that you like, these are some possible suggestions that I enjoyed:

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell - I enjoy all of this author's books, but this was the first one I read by her and it definitely creeped me out when reading it late at night.

The Other by Thomas Tryon - I think this is best enjoyed if you don't read anything about it beforehand. (Actually, I don't think this fits your definition, but I'll leave it here just in case)

House of Small Shadows by Adam Nevill - there were some creepy bits in here, but it ultimately felt like reading a B horror movie. Get the popcorn ready.

Our Lady of Darkness by Fritz Leiber - the atmosphere helps to set the tone for this. It might not end up being what you're looking for, but I found it creepy and I was pleasantly surprised.
