Nickie P | 7 comments I read this book at an elementary school Scholastic Book Fair, so sometime between 2008-2010. It was about a somewhat rude or impatient, impulsive (possibly orphaned and poor) protagonist who become an apprentice magician? or wizard? to an older man with a silent, rather grumpy assistant or servant possibly named Benjamin. The world was one where magicians have a destined stone that serves as a conduit or something for their magic, and the apprentice hadn't yet found his until he encountered essentially the equivalent of a crown jewel--something huge, green, and sparkly. The more magnificent the stone, the harder to control the magic (and the greater the potential, obviously). I also remember the book had two recipes for biscuits at the end--one from the protagonist, which was horrendous, and one from the servant, which (contrary to his gruff and menacing appearance) was very involved and produced wonderfully fluffy and delicious biscuits. Book was in English, and gave me British setting vibes, though that may have just been the magical society setting. Any help would be appreciated!

Mai | 1280 comments Maybe The Magic Thief by Sarah Prineas? (Book 1 of the Magic Thief Series, published in 2008.) One review says: "I think my favorite part of this book was the recipes at the end. Very unexpected and I now need to make some bisquets"
