I started this for the classics tag but didn't finish on time so I was glad to see it fit the detective tag!
This was very long in establishing the scene, probably a third of the way into the book before there is the expected murder happens and Dalgliesh is introduced. The book contains a lot of descriptive passages. They do allow the reader to see the scene but it makes the book drag a bit. With the long intro, I was debating whether or not to continue. Having just read a review of another detective by James, this seems to be her M.O.
As with many English mysteries set in the past, there is a lot of class prejudice and protocols which I generally find to be a turn off. However, once the story finally got going, it moved along and was a very interesting story. Dalgliesh is the interesting character I expected from the many people who have recommended James to me.

The audio itself was well done.
